ESL guy here... what's "dark horse"? I've seen it in sports predictions, but don't know exactly for what it stands. You'd be amazed to see how many Managers, Supervisors, CEOs and Executive Directors don't know how to write well. The miss the F in shift, the l in public, and mistype funk. You bring in "José" from the Hardware group, and he can whip you a 1000-word essay on the dangers of global warming. Writing separates the boys from the BBS Men. Writing is how EVERYONE here communicates. Writing gets you a job (maybe "acting" comes into play). Writing rules.
Winning the lottery is the most respected talent in my book. Next to that, I would have to say playing an instrument.
Well, after learning to play piano and guitar, I have to say that there's a huge difference between "playing an instrument" and "playing an instrument WELL". Most pop musicians nowadays just grab a guitar and just play chords. Others like Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, etc... they're a lot better than that. Same goes for athletics. There are players, and there are TALENTED players. That said, I'd say it's a tie between "playing an instrument" and "athletics". If you're great at those, it's because you not only have talent, you have worked hard to hone your talent. For most of the others on that list, you don't have to have both talent and hard work to be good.
As a writer, I have to say writing gets the least respect. So many people out there think they can write- and just about everyone can- but the real talent is in writing something that a)is good enough to be read/make money, and b)other people want to read. [END RANT] I'd have to have most respect for musicians and stand up comedians. My friend is a stand up, and I don't know how he does it. Every time I see him I'm amazed that he can do it. Those and doctors. These guys have peoples lives in their hands every day. I could never handle that much pressure.
Being a musician, especially one that can play their instrument although I think a writer, mainly a novelist is a great talent also.
I voted for "playing an instrument", but there is some personal bias there. I'm surprised that most other people voted that way. In that case, I want you all to know I play piano and percussion and have been doing it most of my life. (actually, seriously, I guess I should be getting more respect then... if I didn't have such a walk-all-over-me personality... I can do three of the things on the list in the original poll, and will have four if I can successfully learn to sing... or if A-Train's suggestion ends up counting...) I also tend to have respect for some of the stuff I couldn't do if I tried: high-level athletics, visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpting, and especially getting it to resemble anything in real life), and the hard-to-define talent of getting people to consider you a leader.
I'm biased because I play musical instruments, but I would vote for that regardless because it is the most unique on the list. Virtually everything on the list, the average person can do without any practice. You may not be GOOD at writing or athletics, but you have that ability from a very early age. Even singing, while you may suck at it, is universal unless you cannot speak. Playing an instrument is the one thing where you can go from completely and totally inept (on some wind instruments, you may not even be able to make a sound with it at first) to creating amazing music through hard work and dedication. Pretty unique.
i know most people would say personality or even sense of humor. But I think I'd have to say...breast size.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.
I just went down the list and tried to guess which one makes the most money. I chose singer because they can draw big money and fans with very little else. Superstar singers work with millions, even billions of dollars over their contracts. As a society, we've accepted royalty structure and law that assigns huge value to P.Diddy and Britney. We could, of course, change that, with a different copyright law, but we don't. I personally value charisma and leadership over any technical skill set. The alpha can always get beta techies to do his laundry. The tech skill we probably assign the most value to personally is medicine, but of course that's just a skill set, too.
ding ding ding! Easily one of the most underrated movies of all time. You put Teen Wolf running the point on the Rockets with McGrady, Yao, and Stomile, and it's over before it begins...
I got a bad outside hookshot, Im allergic to eggs, I got a 6 dollar haircut, I mean I have problems. I dont need this one.
