in a foreign policy class today the discussion of racism in america came up, and a fellow student stated that he has traveled to dubai and that racism in america is nothing compared to racism in dubai and russia. any other trekkers have personal experience to share??
that is true, but theres a difference between hating someone due to their races than actually acting out on it.
There are plenty of Racist countries. However i think there are two things that make racism in America more dissapointing. 1. The moral high ground that the US tries to claim. 2. As the most powerful, richest nation in the world people expect americans to be educated, enlightened people. People just expect more from the US.
Its been my experience that most people are racist and that its a natural thing. People want to be around their own like kind....
Honestly, the U.S. is probably the only country in the world that sees racism as a bad thing. While some of that is becoming overly PC, you do see more and more of an instance where the idea of race no longer matters. That is a testament to the country U.S. is (the greatest social experiment in history). I wish I can say that about the rest of world, but every other country seem to do their best and concentrate on their differences rather than similariities.
I can't speak for other countries but I definitely have experience with Russia. As I have said before my wife was born and raised in Moscow for the first 26 years of her life before immigrating over here. The description from her was that racism is much broader and in most ways worse in Russia than it is here. Basically over there it isn't about black, white, yellow, red or brown. Yes you will get it for that but the main gist of it is that you will get it if you are not Russian. I can speak to that first hand as the first time I met her family half of them wouldn't even speak or look at me. This included her mother as well. What is worse is that those members basically took her relationship to me as a shame on them. They basically acted for two and a half years like we didn't exist. Essentially we were treated in the same way that an interracial couple would have experienced in the US in the 50's even though we were both white. Fortunately the birth of our first four daughters (identical quads) things smoothed over real quick and they excepted me because they wanted to be a part of their lives.
if you both are white, then it's not racism right? btw, congrats on the daughters. i can't imagine how noisy your house will be when they are all teenagers.
You must have got some press for that too. Less than 50 cases of identical quads exist, of course that without in-vitro or fertility drugs.
Many southeast asian countries are racist against their own people if they are of the darker variety of their race; not to mention darker people of other races. Classism and racism usually go hand and hand in those countries by caste sytems based on color of skin.
Actually they aren't completely identical (to me they are...I get yelled at and corrected by the wife about this a lot to lol). They are quads but two sets of identicals. It is still extremely rare but it happens a little bit more. I have always griped that you can't really tell. But they do have minor little differences as one set has blue eyes, the other has brown, one set has a "C" shaped birth mark underneath their right wrist while the other set doesn't. Those are the most noticeable differences. Other than extremely minor differences you can't really tell. To me they all look like their grandmother (wife's mother). And yes she was on clomifene at the time as we had no success at conceiving. We were told it was unlikely without help. That was a little bit of info that we took to heart lol and wouldn't you know it that two and a half years and one and a half years after that god would grace us with daughters five and six with no medical help at all. Lol!!! As far as press there were a couple little blurbs and one full article we have cut out in the baby book but nothing like you experience with large multiples births today. Yuantain as I came to find out the basic definition of racism and how it is embraced varies from country to country. And for the congrats...thanks but they are grown now and out of the house. You are right though it was very noisy. Because if you read above I had two more daughters after that and combine the fact that I had two sons from a previous marriage that split time between my ex wife and me and yes it was a very chaotic but ultimately enjoyable time wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
You will find racism in every walk of life. The US, despite all of its warts, is better than most nations at dealing with diversity because everyone has to confront it daily. Strongly homogeneous populations can talk up a good game, but actual results may vary. There is a an increasing amount of xenophobia going on in Western Europe right now. A noticable chunk of immigrants aren't integrating into the cultural fabric. All sides would agree that it's the government's inept handling of its immigrant policy that is largely to blame. Where they differ is the immigration standards and amount of benefits/citizenship rights an immigrant receives.
yup, you got that correct. They have been known to be really racist. I mean, look at the picture the Spain Basketball team took.
