When is the last time a team started ranked in the top 5, and didn't make a bowl game?

Tennessee just missed a chance at bowl game today and will have a losing record.. after starting top 5

Year to year Notre Dame is without a doubt the most overrated team.

I'd say this year Notre Dame is fairly decent and definitely not as overrated as Tennessee was this year. Half of ESPN figured they'd be in the national championship instead of Texas.

Not this season, it was a pleasant suprise to see ND have some success after years of crap. I don't anyone thought ND would have the season they have had so far, the only knock on the season was that loss to Michigan St. Some would say USC but they've been the closest to beating the Trojans since Cal did it 2 years ago.

    Rocket Fan,

I agree completely 100%. I am so happy for you and Vandy; I just wished that would have been the win to get them bowl eligible. Nonetheless, it is still a great feeling to see them beat those obnoxious hillbillies. I truly thought I would never see a Vandy win over Tennessee again in my lifetime.

Maybe because this board is predominantly Big 12, i.e. Texas fans? :p ;)

    Manny.. I'm excited

I just wish KWANE DOSTER was alive to see it.. it has been an emotional year for for the players to see their teammate and classmate murdered..

..it is tough to swallow not going to a bowl for my senior year, but I see progress. We went from being a team that gets blown out badly, to losing but closer games, to winning some now.

Despite blowing some games we should have won, if an official doesn't decide to take the game into his own hands vs Florida with the excessive celebration call we may be bowling right now.

It is sweet to have been able to knock UTenn from bowl eligibility though, and even if they win next week.. we'll both be 5-6 with the head to head going to us so .. I can say we are best in state.

As for next year, losing Cutler will be tough... BUT

Earl Bennett is the real deal as WR.. Record number of receptions by an SEC freshman.... and we do have a lot of young talent..

I believe we can be respectable in the SEC if we do things just the right way... we have in place administration (Gordon Gee) who care about athletics...which I was told wasn't always the case in the past pre-gee...

Firing a coach every 5 years didn't work in the past.. it appears we are going to give Bobby Johnson the time he needs to try and get somthing done.. Gee realizes turning things around isn't a 4 year job.. but more like 8 years..

I'd take 5 or 6 wins on a regular basis with some bowl games thrown in considering the academic constraints we have in place compared to the rest of the SEC...

Has a team ever started top 5 and not made a bowl??? like utenn

I root for Tennesee, but I don't care to align myself with most of their fans. If only my dad had gone to a different school...

I vote Notre Dame as well. How many "Return to Glory" or "Ron Powlus - 4 Heismans" can they sell? Christ, they've lost 4 in a row to that hockey school in Boston.

Arizona went 12-1 in 1998, only losing to a rampaging UCLA team that would only be stopped by Edgerrin James late in the season. They returned an enormous number of starters, and were ranked in the top three for the following season - but it didn't last long.

The first game of 1999 was a 41-7 massacre by Penn State and they ended up the year 6-6, with no bowl.

Don't forget Texas in 1997. After going 7-5 (?) in 1996 and getting massacred in the Fiesta Bowl by Penn State, Texas somehow ended up #6 in the nation in 1997. We proceeded to go 4-7 losing at home by 60+ points to an 0-2 UCLA team as well as losing to Baylor.

We went 8-5, I forgot we got that highly ranked. That was pretty ridiculous.

The 1996 team would've been considered dissapointing if we hadn't won the Big XII title game. 10-2 the previous year, with more major contributors returning - we had a great backfield - but James Brown's meltdown in Virginia, and the defense winning the Heisman trophy for Rashaan Salaam kept the team mediocre.
