I love watching movies and the blockbuster season is almost upon us. Just wondering what movies you guys are looking forward to. I'll list them by release date. 1. Van Helsing. 5/7. Reminds me of a cross between "Underworld" and the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." Some of you are probably gagging now, but I actually liked both movies, LXG especially, so I'll probably go see it tomorrow, as I am a fan of the fantasy genre. 2. Troy. 5/14. Epic production, ~200 mil budget. Battle scenes on the scale of ROTK and the story is a timeless classic. My reservations: can Brad Pitt capture the larger than life character of Achilles? from the previews Helen wasn't that hot... c'mon her beauty is supposed to cause the fall of a nation. But anyway, how can you not go see this movie? 3. Shrek 2. 5/19. I loved Shrek, I thought it was highly intelligent and very funny. The same cast is being brought back at something like $8 mil per head, the most ever paid to voice actors. Plus it has Antonio Banderas as puss in boots, I am a huge fan of Banderas and his characters (I should actually write that in the other thread). 4. Around the World in 80 Days. 6/16. Disney adaptation of the famous tale starring Jackie Chan. The previews look good. 5. Spider Man 2. 6/30. So much hype that I guess you can't not see this one. I did like the first one, but maybe not as much as everyone else. However, this one looks even better, and has Dr. Octopuss, one of my favorite villains. I think I might still have a copy of that comic. 6. Anchorman. 7/9. Will Ferrell is currently one of my favorite comedic actors, many of his characters are just ingenious (like big earl in Starsky and Hutch). However my reservation about this one is that it bounced around for a long time, and was only accepted AFTER the success of ELF... what does that mean? I dunno. 7. I-Robot. 7/16. When the first trailers came out I scoffed. But the new ones have some really COOL scenes! Hence I am pretty excited about the movie. 8. Others. May: The Day After Tomorrow. I was gonna see it until "On May 28th, Nature is a mother." That's just insultingly bad. Might still see it though. Soul Plane. I like cheesy humor. June: Harry Potter. My girlfriend will likely make me see this one. The Chronicles of Riddick. I think Vin Diesel's 15 minutes might be up. Garfield. I liked the cartoon back in the day. The Terminal. I am actually looking forward to this movie. The story seems very interesting. July: The Bourne Supremacy. What's up with Matt Damon and the word "Bourne"? Catwoman. Halle Berry... just seems like a great idea, despite me not having seen any clips. King Arthur. Again I like the genre. Zhou Yu's Train. I've actually already seen this... limited release at the end of July. So for those of you who like foriegn films, something to look out for. I thought it was pretty standard Chinese film noir fare... I think the theme is almost overused in Chinese cinema... the next step I think will have to be main stream blockbusters. How many movies about urban desolation can you make? Augusts: Shall We Dance? Yu-Gi-Oh! the movie. Just kidding. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid. Is it me or is this a re-make of that movie with J-Lo and Jon Voight?
Mine 1) Van Helsing - just because the title sounds a little like "Van Halen." 2) Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow 3) I, Robot 4) Spider-Man 2 5) Troy
ooh! Forgot about Sky Captain. Yeah I really think that it's a funny concept... hopefully it's good, otherwise it will be gimmicky.
Troy is at the top and none of the other movies are even close. Van Helsing is probably next, and without a doubt Spiderman 2 is last. Spiderman was a really bad movie IMO.
alright man... just don't be disappointed when it's not accurate or up to par with your expectations.
that's the danger. from the trailer -- "is there no one else" I think that was pretty well done. "immortality, it's yours -- take it!" ... not so much. again I really don't know if Brad Pitt is going to be able to capture the ferocity, angst, and hubris of Achilles. but i can't really think of anyone better either.
You know what, though? I am still in many ways just a sucker for the fact that these films are even being made. Watching the scenes in Gladiator, the opening battle scene, the panoramas of Ancient Rome...friends were asking me if I was going to masterbate. I'm sure they were at least partially joking. It's like you read about these things for years, you envision them, and of late there have been more and more comp. aided recreations for educational purposes...but to still see stuff like this come to life, so long as the performances and plot lines don't actually interfere, they have at the word go just based on the spectacle.
Anticipated is probably Spiderman 2... The one I can't wait to see if VanH and Troy... Also, has anyone seen those commercials for Riddick with VinD...The guy just can't act...Sounds like an idiot, kinda reminds me of Gov. Arnold in Terminator...
first of all... masturbate is with a "u". second of all... arbela. third of all... don't freak out... but I don't know if you've heard of this: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/AlexandertheGreat-10002218/preview.php
LOL! Yeah, friends keep me abreast of everything like this coming down the pike, knowing my mania. I was told that Colin Farrell had the lead, though. Thanks for the link. Very good on Arbela. There is also, apparently, a film being made about Hannibal. ANy on line onfo about that? These are good times for me, in this respect. I think Gladiator takes most of the credit, as it's success paved the way, in that otherwise annoying Hollywood habit of replication. Next question: Which of the Diadocci came the closest to reclaiming Alexander's empire, and how did he fail?
My Top 5: 1. Starwars Episode 3 - Doesn't need an explanation. 2. Troy - Historic and Mythologic significance gets the edge over comic book hero. 3. Spiderman 2 - Hopefully this one isnt as predictable as the first one had to be.... 4. Catwoman - Halle Berry in a catsuit...nuff said 5. Van Helsing - Kate Beckensale...nuff said
You know what, I heard Colin Ferrell too... maybe it's two seperate movies? diadochi's with an "h"... i honestly don't know your question though, i guess the most intent on expansion were the seleucids.
