http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010530/sp/bko_hall_of_fame_3.html Moses Malone Gets Hall of Fame Nod By TRUDY TYNAN, Associated Press Writer SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Temple basketball coach John Chaney is proud to join the Basketball Hall of Fame. He would just like to do it quietly. ``I wish we could keep it a secret,'' Chaney said Wednesday after it was announced he would join former NBA great Moses Malone and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as the latest class with induction ceremonies on Oct. 5. ``I'd like to slip right in without anybody recognizing it,'' Chaney said. ``I'm going to ask them if I can go in without being there. I'll write them a letter.'' The 69-year-old Chaney has been a college coach for 29 seasons, and has led the Owls to 17 NCAA (news - web sites) tournament appearances in 19 seasons, including five NCAA regional finals. ``You look at your whole life in total and you can't put it into words,'' Chaney said at a news conference in Philadelphia. ``It's been overwhelming.'' Malone, who became one of the most dominating centers in the game, jumped from Petersburg (Va.) High School to the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association in 1974 at the age of 19. He went on to play 21 years in the ABA and NBA. ``It is an honor to think people consider me a great player,'' Malone said. ``I never considered myself a great player. I considered myself a hard worker.'' The 6-foot-10 Malone became the third leading rebounder in NBA history - behind Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell - with 16,212, and the NBA's fifth leading scorer with 27,404 points. He also ranks third in games played (1,329), second in free throw attempts (11,090) and first in free throws made (8,531). A 12-time NBA All-Star, he led the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship and was selected MVP of the finals. He also played for Houston, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Washington and San Antonio. Malone said if he had to single out one of his former teammates, it would be Hall of Famer Julius Erving. ``I love him,'' Malone said. ``He is an ambassador of the game.'' Krzyzewski won his third national championship at Duke this spring. He has a 606-223 record in 21 seasons of coaching, four at West Point, his alma mater, and the rest at Duke, where he also won NCAA titles in 1991 and 1992. Coaches are eligible for induction after 25 seasons of coaching, while players must be retired for at least five years. A person needs 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee to be inducted. For the first time since 1992 the Honors Committee did not elect a female player or coach. Two female coaches, Cathy Rush of Immaculata College and Kay Yow of North Carolina State, were among the 17 finalists. The other finalists included coaches Lute Olson, Larry Brown and Jerry Tarkanian, and players James Worthy, Adrian Dantley, Bobby Jones, Earl Lloyd, and international stars Dino Meneghin and Drazen Petrovic. Proposed as contributors were Tex Winter, Grady Lewis and wheelchair basketball pioneer Junius Kellogg. ------------------
He didn't consider himself a great player? That's strange, because I'll bet anyone that saw him play did. ------------------
I'm delighted to see Moses Malone in the Hall of Fame.He was a great player and a Rocket. The Philadelphia 76's could'nt have won the NBA Championship without him. ------------------
I remember when Moses wore boxing gloves to practice after the first game of the finals against the Celtics, ready to fight for some respect. And they won game two... At his peak, Moses was a relentless player who lived to do the dirty work (boards, boxing out) and let the high fliers and quick dribblers make the highlight shows. Not too many in today's league fit that description...damn, I am sounding like one of those "not like the old days" dudes, aren't I? But I miss guys who play like MM.
Question, does a player go into the Hall with a team attached to his name? For the young people on this board that didn't know much about Malone, he never fouled out of a game in his career. You can interpret that anyway you want. I remember watching Malone when he was with the Rockets, it was his relentless attitude toward rebounding that encouraged me not to overlook that part of the game. Does anyone find it interesting that James was not "Worthy" of the Hall of Fame, even though he was named a top 50 player of all time? Personally, I didn't think he deserve to be in the top 50, so I wasn't shock that he didn't make the Hall. I am suprise to see Drazen Petrovic's name on there. He had a very short NBA career, those seasons were good, but they weren't spetacular. ------------------ Congratulations Bill!!!! Technically it's the "Basketball" Hall of Fame, not the NBA hall of fame. That includes women, college players/coaches, and international players. Arthritis Sabonis will probably get into the HOF after he retires... ------------------ If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!!
It's a joke that James Worthy wasn't inducted in the Hall-of-Fame. "Big Game James" was one of the 50 greatest players no question, a key cog in several of the Lakers championship teams, and a big money player and one of the best forwards of the 80s. He should be in. ------------------ "I'm not here to protect my reputation, I'm here to make my reputation! Mama Barkley didn't raise no chumps!" - Charles Barkley
Way to go big MO!!! Now, when is Guy V. Lewis gonna make the freakin' ballot??? ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
Guy V. Lewis should be in there already. Its just sick that he isn't. A HOF question: How many inductees are allowed each time? 3 this year....I can't imagine that 3 is the limit. ------------------ "I have no regrets except that I wasn't up to keep Randy from getting on that plane." --Ozzy Osbourne on guitarist Randy Rhodes
It will be interresting to know how Moses Malone projects to be inducted : as a rocket or as a sixer, tough choice... ------------------ Go Rockets Go!
Congratulations Moses Malone!!! My All-Time Favorite Houston Rocket. ------------------ One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
That was such a huge advantage for Mo. He seldom got into foul trouble while his opponent was always in fould trouble. Mo was always shooting foul shots. ------------------
