Don't forget he spent millions of dollars buying those 2nd round picks.

The Daryl Morey Era officially started at the end of the 2006-07 season. He was NOT the general manager when the Battier trade happened. Here are the moves of note that Morey has made as the Rockets' general manager:

    (1) Traded Juwan Howard to Minnesota in exchange for Mike James and Justin Reed

    (2) Selected Aaron Brooks with the #26 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft (signed to rookie scale contract)

    (3) Traded a 2009 2nd round pick and $1M in exchange for the draft rights to Carl Landry (#31 overall pick) (signed to one-year league minimum contract)

    (4) Selected Brad Newley with the #54 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft (playing overseas)

    (5) Traded Vassilis Spanoulis, a 2009 2nd round pick and cash to San Antonio in exchange for Jackie Butler and the draft rights to Luis Scola

    (6) Signed Luis Scola to a 3-year, $9.45M contract

    (7) Signed Steve Francis to a 2-year, $5.07M contract (player option on second year)

    (8) Traded Bonzi Wells and Mike James (to New Orleans) and the draft rights to Malik Badianne (to Memphis) in exchange for Bobby Jackson, New Orleans's 2008 2nd round pick, and the draft rights to Sergei Lishouk

    (9) Traded Kirk Snyder and a 2010 2nd round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Gerald Green

    (10) Signed Mike Harris to a two-year, league minimum contract (second year non-guaranteed)

    (11) Traded the draft rights to Nicolas Batum (#25 overall pick in 2008 NBA Draft) to Portland in exchange for the draft rights to Darrell Arthur (#27 overall pick) and the draft rights to Joey Dorsey (#33 overall pick)

    (12) Traded the draft rights to Darrell Arthur (#27 overall pick) to Memphis in exchange for the draft rights to Donte Greene (#28 overall pick - signed to rookie scale contract) and Memphis's 2009 2nd round pick

    (13) Selected Maarty Leunen with the #54 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft (will likely play overseas)

    (14) Signed Brent Barry to a two-year, $3.97M contract

    (15) (Pending league approval and subject to minor change) Traded Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene and a 2009 1st round pick to Sacramento in exchange for Ron Artest, Sean Singletary and Patrick Ewing, Jr.

I think that's about it. I left out waived players (including Loren Woods, who Morey had signed to a two-year, non-guaranteed contract) and some other minor moves. But this should be a pretty good list of Morey's moves.

Yeah, that's really good. It seems that Morey has also gotten Les to agree to pay millions in order to secure some of the draft picks and make some of the trades happen. And the Rockets had to take back contracts for players that never contributed on the court (Justin Reed, Jackie Butler, etc.). I wonder much of a negative impact that had.

I meant that the Rockets traded a 2008 2nd round pick in the Landry deal. It ended up being the 2nd rounder they got from New Orleans in the Bobby Jackson deal, #56 overall. The Sonics used that pick to take Sasha Kaun.

    Oops, guess I'm not perfect.

True. But also consider moves like Snyder for Gerald Green and James/Wells for Jackson reversed some of those cap effects -- those 2 maneuvers in particular brought us under the luxury tax for this past year.

As a side note, the Artest trade serves up a giant pile of crow to those who complained about the Wells/James trade. That trade gets done because Morey swapped an ineffective Bonzi with James for Jackson's shorter contract.

I've been most impressed with Morey's ability to pull of seemingly minor maneuvers like the ones at last year's deadline which have real flexibility implications.

I wasn't upset at the Mike James trade, but I admit to eating crow for the way DM got rid of his contract and converting Jackson's expiring contract + Greene for Artest(who also has an expiring contract if he doesn't pan out). I felt Bonzi was marginally better than Jackson, but I'm really surprised and glad how this has turned out.

    Think about the following transactions:

Hornets trading Bobby Jackson for Wells and Mike James.

Hornets sold the 27th overall pick of the 2008 draft to Portland for cash.

Portland traded the 27th overall pick (D. Arthur) +33rd overall pick (J. Dorsey) of the 2008 draft to Rockets for 25th Overall pick Batum.

Rockets traded 27th overal pick Arthur to Memphis for 28th overall pick (Greene) + Next Year's Memphis 2nd rounder.

Hornets spend MLE signing James Posey.

What do all these tell you?

The New Orleans Hornets could have had Ron Artest and next year's Memphis second round pick and still have kept their MLE if they had simply not bailed the Rockets out with the Mike James and Bonzi contracts.

It is scary how good Morey is.

I was going to add that.

The Hornets could have had Artest and Memphis 2nd rounder next year instead of Posey and Mike James for $3m cheaper this year, and not been on the hook for Mike James $6.5m option the following year.

The privilege of Mike James and a half season of Bonzi Wells is costing New Orleans $9.5 mill (minus whatever cash they got from Portland), giving them a huge downgrade from Artest to James Posey and forcing them to be on the hook for James Posey for 4 years in addition to missing out on a high 2nd.

Frankly, I couldn't be happier. A team of Paul-Artest-Peja-West-Chandler would have been pretty fierce. Oops!

I honestly don't think that New Orleans would have been a good destination for Artest. He would have gotten himself into trouble quite a bit there. Plus, there is no solid veteran leadership on that team to keep Ron Ron in check. Peja is about the only one who comes to mind, but he's not really a team leader. Chris Paul is an MVP-caliber talent, but could he have been trusted to keep Artest on his best behavior? Same for David West? Tyson Chandler?

I think Ron Artest coming to Houston is as much about the Rockets' existing roster as it is about the more immediate moves made by Daryl Morey.

Hornets are already pretty good and have a big window to get better so I don't think they would have wanted Artest. We are desperate as our stars are at the end of their primes.

I agree with that to a certain degree... but I would rather take my chance with Artest in a contract year than 32-year-old Posey on a long term contract.

How would Artest have fared being with Byron Scott vs being with Rick Adelman?

Considering Baron Davis' history with Scott,I don't think he would have done well there. Ron will give Rick a tough time IMO, but I feel Houston is the better place for him.
