Morey seems to have gotten involved with a lot of beefy guys-- more than NBA GMs usually do, at least He signed Chuck Hayes to a long term deal: . Drafted Carl Landry: First cut but then signed back Mike Harris: Picked Joey Dorsey: Sure he got himself some skinny ones like Aaron Brooks, but there are simply a lot more of these around. Seems atypical for a roster to have 4 beefy guys at the same time. (And we are not even including the 300 lb behemoth, who arguably doesn't count because he's so tall). And there's the guy he retained, but traded away to dump Mike James' salary: Can we expect more of those in the future?
lol at kg on yao. that was a foul! how come all of the sudden he became the dpoy once from minny to the celts?
Yao should have opened up,turned and put that elbow right in KG's nose and I guarantee, it wouldn't be done again.
One beefy guy who the Rockets probably don't care much about and probably vice versa is Maggette. He isn't the smartest guy or the best fit,and certainly isn't going to be easily available with the MLE but he isn't a Stro either.
lol at glen davis's pic....is that real? i don't see mike harris as a beefy guy. I don't think beefy guy is the right description, but rather tough bigs who has great strength that won't back down to challenges. chuck hayes, landry, dorsey are prime examples. tats also why glen davis is ignored by morey....hes more porky than tough.
I know the thread is meant as a joke, but there's a rationale behind Morey's infatuation with beefy big men. They are Billy Beene's prototypical fat baseball players with pure hitting abilities. Everyone snatches up the 6'10 skywalkers with the high draft picks and the cap space. If you have limited resources at your disposal, the thinking is probably that you're better off going with undersized beefy guys like Hayes/Landry who know how to play rather than gambling on Stromile Swift.
I hadn't thought about that angle. It makes sense, when you think about it. Billy Beane (pre-Moneyball hitting the streets) would look for the fat guy w/ good plate discipline who drew walks and held a high OBP, because that was what was undervalued in 2000-03. I can see where the same principle applies to Morey and the beefy, long 6'7" PF. However, once the book came out, and people saw what Beane was doing, the dynamic switched. You now see OBP as a primary stat, and guys get contracts off of OBP. That's when Beane switched to getting defensive guys, because that was what was undervalued. If the 6'7" - 6'9" PF/C comes into vogue, can Morey adapt? More importantly, where would he be looking from there?
I can't make up my mind if I chuckle at van Gundier's thread titles or if I think he tries too hard to make them clever sometimes. Depends on my mood, I guess... Hmm...chuckle .
We should have a fantastic line-up as: C Yao ; PF KG ; SF Gay SG Brandon Roy PG Rafer Don't you think such a team would have been gonna win the ships of 07 08 .....?If Dawson had traded tmac and head and the 2nd round pick for KG and 1st round pick(min),we would have this great team with big four, rather than big three. We rejected the deal because we didn't want to trade head ,unfortunately we missed roy as a result .Today even 100 heads may not be able to trade roy here.
Just having some fun... change of pace from straight up b****ing about why Rockets aren't going after Player X or Player Y.
