the little i read about him, there was one concern, how much of a hand did he have with the celtics? was he a part of what ainge did? if so that scares me, but i have faith cd taught him well
I share your concern. But, the other thing is that the Rockets have one heck of a coach. As Van Gundy said, just bring me the guys and I'll figure them out. If they don't fit his system, he won't play them. Van Gundy is Riding Yao, McGrady, Battier, Alston hard. Real hard!! Head, Howard, Hayes, and Mutumbo round out the rotation. Let's not forget that if Van Gundy has a problem with a player, then they are in his dog house. Refer to Wells, Nachbar, Griffin, Spanoulis, etc. Each of those guys got mad because their minutes weren't satisfying for themselves. Only one of them is on the playoff roster; "But for how long with the team?" Morey is going to soon learn that Coach only plays whom he likes, and only if they give him what he demands of them!!! There, then, all of the Celtics debacles aren't so much of a concern here. Numbers are nice, but the grit of a player is something that Coach Gundy demands!!!
You want to know what's scary... I believe Morey was a large factor in the Celtics signing of Brian Scalabrine...he's a "moneyball" player, the type of player that requires looking behind traditional stats to see his contributions to the team (like using +/- team-oriented stats). However, once you overpay a player like that, he sucks. Those +/- numbers from a scrub only look good when they are a decent value. Players in this league easily go from undervalued to overvalued...especially when GM's with money to spend are involved.
Morey DID have a hand in that and he said so himself in a short article he wrote for Celtics.com (which has since been taken down). As it turns out, hwoever, Brian Scalabrine, though sucked horribly last year, wasn't half bad this season. Besides, he only makes 2-3 million a year. There are much bigger mistake signings out there.
