He likes our young players. He's not surprised about the Dwight trade, but this is how he said he feels...
yes that's what he said When asked about Hennigan's comments that Houston offer sheets hampered talks, Morey said those were done a long time ago so he didn't see it that way.
- 4 time to Olympics...Olympics fanatic - not surprised with trade that happened, was in contact and expected it, feels good about our young players...every move was made to start fresh or go for a big move - ORL deals were done for quite a while...thinks Rob is unbelievable exec, great deal for ORL, thinks we were close but ORL found better than our offer. - agents appropriately involved, no issues with agents, respects what they do for their clients (players) - doesn't want to talk about the CBA rules, can't - talking to couple of free agents, thinks we will have a team that fights for a playoff spot, 1-15 players have upside, cap room, or Toronto and Dallas pick to trade - feels good about talent, cap room, draft picks, foreign players and other things acquired to improve... - doesn't see anything out of balance, roster set as is...some PF played center, better to have more bigs than less..looking to run most of the time.. - Lin, Martin, Parsons, Asik likely starters, up to McHale - Martin very professional, doesn't see him being diff in contract year, effective when healthy, injuries and things that he cant talk about impacted him and others in the league last year (I guess he's talking about the new referee rules that affected his ability to go 2 for 1) - guys in gym already, McHale working with bigs
Quick Summary for those who missed out. Matt:Was this your first Olympic Games? Daryl: No. Olympic fanatic and has been to Atlanta, Beijing etc. Plans to go to Rio Matt Asks about 4 team trade and whether Morey was surprised Daryl: Not surprised. Rockets comfortable with were they are set up. Comfortable with young players Lin, Lamb, Parsons, Jones, Motie etc. Every move made was to set up in a position like this Matt: Offer sheets put out made it difficult to deal with Rockets? Daryl: Not seen Rob's comments. Deals were done for a while. It all comes down to Rob and if it made it difficult so be it. In these big trades, it often comes down to how people value individual players in the deal. Morey talks about last year's deal with Hornets and how they liked players in that deal. Hennigan is an unbelievable executive and will be around for a while. Matt: Did you come close to get a deal done? Daryl: I do. They kept pushing and they liked this trade more than others. Rob knows what he is doing and will be a great exec for Orlando Matt: Are agents for players becoming too involved? Daryl: Appropriately involved. Their duty to look out for best deal for clients. Morey has no issues with the agents trying to get their clients to their best situation. Matt: Do you have concern about level playing field for big market and small market teams? Is new CBA going to close the gap Daryl: Has lot of details opinions but no comments. Matt: Going forward, do you roll with what you have? Free agents Rox interested in. Daryl: Talking to a few free agents. Nothing concrete. Comfortable with what we have and always aggressive in the market. Morey comfortable because 1-15 through roster gives Rox flexibility for cap room or be involved in big trades. Will be patient and see how it pans out. Matt: Is it now realistic to grow your own superstar now? Daryl: Feel good about our young talent, they can be high level players, comfortable about cap room, draft picks acquired and foreign players. Does not want to force anything. Will pull trigger on anything that makes them championship contenders. Matt: Is roster balanced out? Lot of PF's on the roster. Daryl: Very comfortable, feels it is well balanced. Rather have more bigs than less bigs. Some of the PF's can play center. Planning to be uptempo fast and mobile team. Asik traditional 5 and may not have traditional 5 to fill in. Rather hybrid 4's. Matt: Is Lin/KMart starting back court. Daryl: McHale question. Spots still open and go with what you think helps win. Matt: Have you talked to KMart about going into last year of his deal? Daryl: Very professional player. Does not see him being different contract vs non contract. Does not need motivator. Effective player when healthy. Injuries and factors that affected his season last year. Closing comments: Daryl excited about young guys and coach McHale has plenty to work with and looking forward to first game.
If that was better than our offer than we didn't offer enough, and unfortunately Daryl, you're going to have to take the blame for that. We must've been balling WAY too low.
Insinuated that those deals took away from Houston's ability to give them cap relief in a deal. Which is dumb, since (1) we still could (2) they got virtually no cap relief in the deal they made All you can figure is that the trade bar for Houston was set higher than with others. Hennigan was probably looking at the best offer we could possibly put together and was angry that we only put forward 40% of it (still being the best offer on the table)
I find it interesting how he said he felt like the Rockets received a silver medal like Makyla. Obviously, he felt they were in it, close enough for silver but not the gold. Says alot.
Morey destroying fan misconceptions about Martin. Im certain it won't deter anyone from irrationally hating him though.
