Talking baseball - about Chacon and Wade, saying people asking Morey if he needs a little extra security, and Morey said Joey Dorsey will be his enforcer to take care of him. 2. Talking about how big Dorsey is - says Dorsey makes up for lack of heighth by being so big, with long arms and being ripped, he plays way bigger than his listed height - .......NFL scouts said they would have been on him for a free agent try out because he is such an amazing athletic speciman. 3. The announcers are saying that he was up and down and Memphis and didn't always show up, and they are asking Morey if he is coachable.....Morey - says when he is on the floor he is extremely productive, says Calipari had to stay on him a bit, Morey says bottom line is that when he is on the floor he creates extra possessions with steal and blocks and finsihes STRONG at the rim, basically only dunks. 4. Announcers laugh and say he is a hell of a free throw shooter,, Morey laughs and says .....I can tell you guys don't like this pick...laugh. 5. Morey talks about what they wanted in the this draft one of the best wing players, and that his staff knew what other teams wanted and use that against them, specifically against San Antonio, basically intelligence of other teams and what they wanted allowed them to get their guy and get extra picks. 6. They liked Batum but thought Greene fit in better for the Rockets, doesn't think either will contribute for a while....says Greene is a legit 6'9 with athleticism and can shoot, liked him and thought he could actually reach his potential. 7. There is a furor over the Rockets not drafting Chris Douglas Roberts on the message boards - why did CDR fall so far....Morey says he is gifted between 6 and 15 feet he is an amazing offensive player.....but he says he gets no speratation on that shot, struggles against NBA types to get that shot, and can not shoot past 15 feet and his distance shooting will struggle...says he is someone that Memphis did not run plays for and was just beating his guy off the dribble and Adelman's offense does not work for that type of player. 8. What did you learn about running RA offense last year - Morey - want players who can shoot and attack the basket, Donte has potential and does need to improve, we needed size and shooting, and Greene's attacking the basket game is good but needs to get better........Morey went with Donte, says he has a LONG WAY TO GO TO DEVELOP. 9. Future, looking to add one or two free agents this offseason, and maybe someone else at the trade deadline going into the playoffs. 10. Landry - Rockets will sign him, ......says his health is fine and he has recovered from his knee problems......says that he compares to someone like Lowe because he contributes when he is out there. 11. Chuch Hayes contract - This year, next year, then a team option........ 12. Is there a chance that the Rockets might use the NBDL more often....Morey - we are one of the more heavy users, he says that he anticipates our rookies playing there (Now where did I hear that? )..... 13. Dorsey is more NBA ready than Greene, thinks that because Dorsey is a multipossesion player and our injury issues with Yao and Landry, that Dorsey gives depth to the bigs. 14. If Carl develops his outside stroke could he move to the 3......Morey sees him as a 4, but Rick Adelman looks at matchups and may move him there for a spell but thinks majority of minutes will be at the PF spot. 15. Morey feels bad for fans who watched telecast because it was hard to see who got what especially after Pick 20 and more than half of them have been traded. 16. Rockets will now start to look at other teams rosters after the draft to see if there are some opportunities for the Rockets. 17. Rockets had a couple of trades to move up that required players, didn't materialize, and tht the Rockets have some contracts that are attractive to other teams. 18. Rockets going to deal, but not sure what the timing will be, definitly will sign a free agent or two, wants to be patient as to when the deal comes along either in the summer or at trade deadline. 19. How will you use the MLE......we have the MLE and the LLE.....Les will use it to go into the Lux tax...worried about signing Carl and the use of the MLE and timing because of his contract situation(Huh, Landry's contract situation effecting the use of the MLE....now where have I heard THAT mentioned )...... 20. Asked about the cap and Bi -annual.......Morey says 80% of teams are over it.....and there is the Mid level every year, and the Bi Annual can be used every other year.....for about 2 million...says there are some veterans that want to win, and we may be able to use it to get one that wants to come to Houston to win..... 21. Congrats to Morey.......about his former team winning the championship....Laughing...says he gets no credit for that.....and that Kevin McHale should get some credit. 22. Morey asked about Francis, was in Gym yesterday....with Brooks, Woods, Harris..etc....says Steve is working out against Brooks and is amazed at the young guys legs.... 23. Happy that they got the guy they wanted.....in Greene and picked up another high 2nd pick for next year.......Morey is happy it worked out...... 25. Asking Morey what it is like for Deep Blue to drink San Antonios Milk shake for the 2nd year......said Batums Agent was trying to get him to 26....said that most of the league was on to his machinations of faking injuries to get him to the Spurs. 27. Asked about more Euros in Utah.....Koufos, Dragovich and other...thinks Koufus will be on their roster next season......Morey says they have not had a chance to see where everyone fell as far as rosters go.... 28. Morey - free agency now hits us...no break....more important as far as Rockets roster for this next year.....as far as contributors go (no help expected from Greene)........Says Portland is playing with monopoly money up there.... 29. Morey says Memphis is all over the maps with their picks.....says that Mchale loves Kevin Love....What happened to Arthur...Morey says no medical there it was more about what teams need.........says it was a VERY deep draft for bigs.......and Arthur got caught up in those numbers. 30. Morey thinks this draft will be remembered for a lot of depth and that Rose may be an all timer......asked if Morey is worried about Beasley's height.....Morey likes height but says that when you pick late.....you need to go with production, thinks the league in general begs off height too fast.......based upon a half an inch to an inch....like with Landry and Milsap etc....says NBA team's look too MUCH at height......as a rule.....especially late in the first round and beyond. 31. Morey says because of Josh Howard, that is why they personally do not make promises in the draft.......because in Boston they had promised to take Kendrick Perkins or they would have gone Howard....but couldn't because of the promise....so he will never make a promise. 32. Morey doesn't like draft grades, thinks we have picked up assets going forward........ASSETS...exactly how he should look at it..... 33. ...They are busting him about CDR........Morey says his competitiveness is super high but that he was not a good fit here.....and Donte was...... 34. Morey says..that JVG made the point that sometimes it is about the player getting an opportunity sometimes makes players look better......because they play on bad teams....they get early opportunities..... They are busting on JVG and how he only talks about defense...says that Dorsey reminds him a lot of Anthony Mason......Morey thought that JVG was a good addition to their telecast because they usually don't have an NBA coaches perspective....to balance Bilas etc.....as JVG would think about how he would fit on the floor for the NBA team. Says Dorsey plays “extremely big” and is “wide.” Commentators concerned that Dorsey is up-and-down and pouty sometimes. M. says D. is extremely productive when on the floor. Says he creates extra possessions with offensive rebounds and steals and is the best big defender in the country. Says they wanted “one of the top wing players” but couldn’t trade up. We liked Batum but evaluated Greene as a better player for us. Both are very young and high upside guys and won’t contribute for a while. Calls Greene a legit 6’9” PF who can shoot. Some inconsistent play but works hard. Asks why CDR fell so far. M. calls him skilled at making shots between 6 and 15 feet but gets no separation on this shot. Can’t shoot past 15 feet. We needed depth at the big. Commentators ask can Carl move to the 3? We see him as a 4 and think he’ll play there. Coach may be willing to try that, but mostly he’ll be at the 4. We had a few trades to move up that would’ve involved players but these didn’t work out. We have players with good contracts that other teams want. We need to upgrade through trades to help in the playoffs next year. We’re not focused on when that will happen, just getting the right deal. Mr. Alexander will go over the luxury tax for the right player. 80-90% of teams are over the cap so many trades are an exception to the cap. There are some FAs who really want to come to Houston. Derrik Rose has a chance to be an “all-timer.” We think height’s important, but late in the draft you can’t always get it. D. is long and that’s good. You’d rather take a shorter player who’s good than one who is 1” or 2” taller that can’t play. Landry is a good example, Powe, you have to trade off some characteristics for players late in the draft (they’re shorter but can play). CDR’s competitive and can score, we just feel Greene was a better fit for us. Commentators and M. say that JVG was good to have as a commentator b/c he can speak about the coach’s perspective.
thanks for the recaps guys. I side with Morey on the CDR, I don't think he will be able to get his shot off in the NBA. My only question is, why not Chalmers in the second, instead of Dorsey?
