They would have had to trade players to create that capspace. So they would've lost one or more of Anderson, Williams, Gordon and Beverley to get CP3. Beverley is not needed when you have CP3 on the team and you have Eric Gordon to be the backup guard off the bench, so Lou Williams was expendable too. The Rockets lack frontcourt depth so trading Anderson to get another guard without having something lined up at PF or C first wasn't desirable.
What if Clips traded him to another team since they didn't want to lose CP3 for nothing? And how are you gonna get him for capspace when the Rox have no capspace?
There's a reason Alexander locked him up for 4 years before his contract expired. Posters here are spoiled how about they try following a franchise managed by Billy King and see what happens.
2015 1st (dekker) 2017 1st (lou) 2018 1st (traded) 2017 or 2018 1st (Beverley couldve get one easy) let see how all this works out, but come on CF lets not act like we gave up a lot, but seems like he was in a hard place with anderson contract
4 first rounds picks or 3 first round picks and a first team cheap contract all D team player with big heart for a guy leaving in 3 days....
that goes both ways, there are also teams that would not kill to have morey, ie. GS, OKC, SAS. we have the mvp (in real terms), why settle for 5th best GM? the reason is that les wants a yes-man by his side, hence the 4yr extension.
None of those first round picks were likely to turn into a top 10 NBA player like CP3. Dekker is your average bench guy right now, and those picks would have produced more guys like him. The Rockets aren't going to be drafting in the lottery with Harden and Mike D'Antoni leading the way.
as already posted, we would have gotten a pick for bev and something for the other players as well. as far as keeping anderson for frontcourt depth, the guy is useless inside of the arc so i really don't follow
Daryl Morey is every bit Sam Presti's equal. Presti had done squat before yesterday since hitting on high draft picks with Westbrook, KD and Harden, and drafting Ibaka late. As for the rest of your comment, let me know when the four gm's you consider better than Morey decide to leave their well-run teams. Otherwise, you're complaining over nothing.
cp3 only opted in b/c they were trading him to HOU. he wanted to come here and only here, b/c of harden. regarding capspace, we could have just traded out the same package around the league but gotten picks back instead of giving something up.
wrong, presti got taj gibson before the deadline right under morey's nose as well. and i would say presti is a far far better drafter than morey -- not even close. regarding elite gm's, this isn't like blue chip nba players with elite size/athleticism subjuct to nba draft rules. there is brain talent all over the league to be tapped into, bob myers was just a sports agent w/ arn tellem before GS found him. and again i'm not saying morey is terrible or even just average, only that we shouldn't give him a free ride when he F's up just b/c things could be worse.
Well first of all teams will definitely give you a pick and no salary for Beverly but will they do the same for Lou Will, Harrell and Dekker? Remember LA Lakers had to take Brewer's salary to get Lou Will off their books and that was a special case because they wanted to tank. It's easy to say oh yeah just trade Lou Will for picks but remember Morey has tons of unguaranteed salaries he can use as trade fillers, you'd think if a team wanted to give a pick for Lou Will/Dekker/Harrell he would trade those guys for picks and just use his other unguaranteed salaries in the trade instead. What if nobody wants to take Lou WIll off your books you miss out on Cp3. Also, signing Cp3 is different from trading for him because signing a guy means you need capspace whereas trading for a guy means you can go over the cap as long as the salaries match. Being over the cap IIRC generates assets like the mid level exceptions which won't happen if you are under the cap. Signing cp3 would require clearing capspace for his salary and then when you sign him you can't do anything else, OTH if you had him in the cap you get exceptions like MLE and LLE you can use to sign other players. I mean Morey and co. are doing this for a living the benefits of signing a guy vs trading for a guy is something they will be able to see.
Every report says they would've had to trade first round picks to unload Anderson. So no, they would not have received something for him. And dekker, harrell and the rest of the scraps they traded would have brought back 2nd rounders at best. They haven't proven enough in the league to command a first round pick. So sure, they could've traded Bev and Williams to different teams for first round picks, and Dekker and Harrell for 2nds to create the space needed to offer CP3 a max deal. But then you also give CP3 a chance to meet with teams with capspace and he may change his mind about playing in Houston. All the Rockets lost that didn't have to go in your scenario was a 2018 first, which should be a very low pick, and having more picks at their arsenal to trade for a third star. But it's not like they made a bad deal.
Taj Gibson, really? Gibson is a solid player, I'll give you that, but Morey traded for two top 10 players without possessing elite young players or top 10 draft picks. That's more impressive than hitting on three top 5 picks and trading for a role player in Gibson. Plus Morey found Patrick Beverley in Russia and drafted Clint Capela. Also, name a draft pick Presti has hit on since drafting his big 4. Reggie Jackson is the best of the bunch and he's not a good starting point guard in the league.
so it seems you both agree we could have had the 2 first round picks needed to dump anderson's contract (one from trading bev and the other our own 2018) if we had just waited a couple days and let cp3 sign under capspace. but now instead we have the MLE to sign an end of the rotation player at best and plus, we still have anderson's corpse on the payroll..
Well first of all I already said it not guaranteed you can clear enough cap to let cp3 sign under capspace. How can you just assume other teams will take 15M in salary and not give you anything back? Didn't the Rockets have to pay Lakers with a pick to get rid of Lin who also made 7M and was a decent player? You're not operating with full information if you can pull out a GM who will say they would give a pick for Lou Will and absorb his salary then ok Morey made a mistake. I don't know what Anderson's corpse has to do with this situation he would have been on the team with or without Cp3.
abrines, adams, and sabonis have all been good picks in their respective drafts. and with gibson we probably beat SAS and advance. no way LMA destroys us inside as easily
How do propose matching salaries for a third star like Melo via trade without a contract like Anderson? In your grand scenario, the Rockets wash out on draft picks, and give up Anderson, Williams and Beverley to acquire CP3. Which means they have no trade exception, no MLE or other exceptions to add players. And to match expensive salaries, they'll have to include Gordon or Ariza.
