Many people have already expressed their desire to see Yao elbow someone in order to intimidate his opponents and gain the much needed respect from his fellow players.

And I agree, but a more important reason why Yao's elbow could help his game is its effect on the refs.

I think a little vigilante action by Yao will give the refs a wake up call that Yao will no longer stand idly by while taking the constant barage of fouls without getting the whistle. He's going to put the pressure on the refs to pay more attention down low and call the game more closely b/c if they don't somebody might get mouth full of elbow. One rackus is all it takes for the refs to give Yao the respect that he deserves in the paint. Else, if Yao continue to just complain and whine without showing any anger or aggression; the refs will just see Yao as a big whinner and continue to believe that the little jousts in the paint is not serious enough to warrant a foul.

Frankly, we may not need Yao to suddenly become a Ron Artest but a little Ben Wallace and couple of game of suspension could help him in the long run.
