Isiah takes ESPN analyst to task

    Marty Burns, SI.com

NEW YORK -- The surprising play of rookie forward Renaldo Balkman this preseason has Knicks GM/coach Isiah Thomas feeling good. And he's letting ESPN analyst Greg Anthony, a former Knick, hear about it.

Still upset over Anthony's draft night criticism after the Knicks selected the unheralded Balkman with the No. 20 pick, Thomas ripped his fellow former point guard Wednesday.

"This so-called former Knick, on draft night with millions of people watching, had the audacity to take me to task on a player that I'm pretty sure he had never seen before in his life," Thomas said. "But he stands on national television and talks about a kid he has absolutely no idea about. I'm just glad that all of New York doesn't think like Greg Anthony."

Thomas went on to question Anthony's credentials as a TV commentator, and even took a slap at his 12-year NBA playing career.

"Greg Anthony should never ever be in a position to question myself on anything about basketball," Thomas said. "I do remember the kind of player he was. I'll leave it at that.

Balkman, a 6-8 forward from South Carolina, has played well during New York's first three exhibition games. He had 11 points and seven boards in 16 minutes against the Nets in his debut, and had nine points, seven rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes in Tuesday night's exhibition win over the Celtics. His hustle and energy even won over the Madison Square Garden crowd, which gave him a rousing ovation as he left the floor.

With Balkman off to a good start, Thomas felt free to vent some of his pent-up anger.

"This is between Greg and I," Thomas said in a lengthy diatribe about Anthony to the media after the Knicks practice. "The things he said on draft night ... after all the good solid work we had done in the draft ... for him to take that position he took ... I thought he was way way way out of bounds."

Thomas , who was booed by the New York crowd and widely panned by other ESPN commentators on draft night, said he was singling out Anthony because of his status as a former Knicks player. He said he hadn't spoken to Anthony, but would love to in the future.

"I just thought he was very unfair to the Knicks organization," Thomas said. "It would be different had he not worn a Knick uniform. But for a guy who claims to have been a Knick, to treat the Knicks the way he treated us that night ... I know a Piston would never do that. A Celtic would never do that. A Laker would never do that. It wouldn't happen. It just goes to show you what we're dealing with."

Thomas went on to refer to Anthony several more times during the remainder of the 15-minute session with reporters, sometimes even on unrelated questions.

When asked whether he could see Balkman someday defending LeBron James or Tracy McGrady, Thomas replied, "Wait a minute, hold on now ... you can run him out there but he'll probably get stepped on a little bit ... Unlike Greg Anthony, I do have respect for others."

When asked about the Knicks' dismal season a year ago, and what role all the injuries played, Thomas said, "We all were in a funk last year ... Greg Anthony was in a funk."

Later, when talking about Balkman's ability to handle the ball, a reporter jokingly asked if he had a better handle than Greg Anthony. "Most definitely," Thomas said. "Greg could only go left."

Anthony declined to comment through an ESPN spokesman.

Damn, seems like Isiah is on a mission (or crack) this season. Reminds me of when he went after Bill Simmons. I wish Anthony would have responded though.

as bad as Isiah has been in his post-playing career, Gregy Anthony really hasn't done anything special either, and he was clearly a much inferior player.

Not the biggest Isiah fan, but this is pretty funny. I hope he keeps ripping on Anthony.

isiah can blow his own horn right now, but that doesn't change the fact that he screwed up. he could have signed balkman as a undrafted free agent. the guy wasn't even in the freaking draft night guide.

speaking of simmons....does anyone have the link to simmons' bad GM convention article? that was some of the funniest stuff I have ever read.

While I think Thomas is a horrible GM, I agree with his comments toward Greg Anthony. I promise you the GA had never seen a game Balkman played this year. I hate the NBA Draft crew. I don't think Jay Bilas ever played in the NBA, I know Screaming A Smith never played in the NBA, and Dan Patrick just sucks. To criticize the young guy like they did on possibly the greatest day of his life was wrong. Forgot to mention that Bilas and Smith did that same thing to Charlie Villanueva the year before and look how he turned out.

Balkman wouldn't have gotten undrafted. The Knicks liked him and they drafted him. Nothing wrong about that. Who's to say that someone after the Knicks picked wouldn't have selected Balkman. While I agree Isiah is likely the one of the worst GM in history, he is great on draft night. He drafted Damon Stoudamire in 1995 when everybody thought he should have drafted Ed O'Bannon. He drafted Marcus Camby in 1996, Tracy McGrady in 1997, Channing Frye, Nate Robinson, and David Lee in 2005.

Thomas sounds overreacting to me. Come on, commentators' job is to make comments. They question draft decisions all the time. What's the big deal. What does that have to do with how good a basketball player Anthony was? Thomas was a great player. So what? He screwed up big time as a GM and at other things.

Did the two have something in the past? Why such venom? If they didn't have anything personal, I'd say Thomas's tirade was quite classless.

Did Greg Anthony say something about Isaiah's momma to set him off? I've hardly seen a more hateful and personal diatribe than that...

Coach Zeke has enough battlefronts as it is. Greg Anthony may have been out of line but the last thing Isiah needs to do is start a personal war with a commentator. It's a no-win situation. This time next year, Greg Anthony will have the same job; Isiah will be unemployed.

One of the things about being an NBA coach is people will rip you mercilessly and ignorantly on occassion. It comes with the territory. Isiah should throw out the rabbit ears and focus on the task at hand.

I agree. If Kenny Smith hadn't supported the Rockets drafting Yao when he first started with TNT.... you bet that he'd be getting tons of flack from everybody here.

And Kenny Smith had a better career than Greg Anthony. Anthony was a bum, by NBA standards... only got recognized because of his play on a high profile college team (UNLV), and a high profile pro team (Knicks).

If he plays for any other NBA team, he likely doesn't have a job right now.

G-Money is paid to be an analyst, to say controversial things once in a while. His only 'loyalty' -- if we assume that there is such a thing -- is to the people currently paying him: ESPN.

He's a very good analyst and "NBA Shootaround" is a very entertaining pre-game/halftime show. I like Greg and Tim...but I love Baklava!

Greg Anthony is terrible. He was a very limited player and even more limited as an analyst. What is worse is that he has no humility.

He berated Marc Stein ("You are a good basketball writer but you are not qualified as a scout") when Stein suggested that the Lakers (during Rudy's coaching term) should go to Lamar Odom to score because of his athleticism at the 4. Anthony was adamant that Odom was an outside shooter and a SF, who couldn't score against PF's in the West and totally degraded Stein. I'm no big fan of Stein, but I watched the Lakers a lot that year because of Rudy, and Rudy isoing Odom was their 2nd most run play next to Rudy isoing Kobe.

And then that night, the Lakers played Minn in a big game. The game was back and forth late and tied up. For like 6 straight posessions the TWolves went to KG who just dominated Odom 1-on-1, but at the same time, the Lakers went exclusively Odom, who dominated KG 1-on-1. And then in the end Odom got the big and-1 and the Lakers won. While this was never discussed, I felt that it sort of redeemed what Stein was talking about. A big part of the Lakers' success was the ability of Lamar Odom to use his length and quickness at the PF position, and he totally beat KG numerous times to close out the win.

Then there was the summer before Shaq and Kobe broke up. Anthony declared that the two would stay together because they both know that they'll win more championships that way. Jim Gray totally called Anthony out and said "you have no idea what you're saying. You don't even talk to these guys, so you shouldn't be acting like you know what they want. I talk to these guys and I know they hate eachother." While Jim Gray is an ass, Anthony is an idiot. Anthony was like "I'm an expert analyst and that's what they pay me to be at ESPN. You're just a reporter. I know my stuff. Kobe and Shaq are going to stay together."

Yeah, and of course the general nba analysis at ESPN just sucks major balls anyways. At least TNT has comedic value added to their stupidity. Well, Kenny Smith says something decent once in a while.

Disney Sports Network in general basically sucks.

I prefered it when the NBA was on NBC for their over the air broadcast. I liked it better when the NBA had games on TNT two nights a week, and a game on TBS.

With TNT, they have both style and substance.

I hope JB shuts down Greg Anthony.

    Isaiah should have thicker skin.

Anthony is paid to be honest in his opinions.

Thomas.....well, he has SCREWED up the Knicks franchise and set them back 10 years....WOOOHOOO !!

1 Agreed. This is definitely the real crux of the matter.

    but,

2 Anthony is a jerk who talks off the top of his head way too many times. His opinion of himself is off the charts and it shows.

3 The ONE thing Isiah does well is draft, which is the subject here. But his trades and free agent signings are so historically bad it's amazing.

I never liked Greg A. much, just like I never liked S.A.Smith much either.. but DAYM those are some sharp words Zeke threw at Greg A!!!!

I thought it was pretty low for Zeke to bring up Greg's NBA past, although it was pretty true. But oh well, who cares.. I don't like Zeke much either..

Bottom line is.. Balkman might turn out decent, but Knicks will still lose ^_^

..so, it's a lose-lose situation for both of them.
