    Repairing The Job Machine

If the economy produces jobs over the next eight months at the same pace as it did over the past four months, the nation will have created more jobs in 2010 alone than it did over the entire eight years of George W. Bush's presidency.

That comparison comes with many footnotes and asterisks. But it shows how the economic debate between the parties could look very different over time -- perhaps by November, more likely by 2012. More important, the comparison underscores the urgency of repairing an American job-creation machine that was sputtering long before the 2008 financial meltdown.

    ---------------

    Healthcare reform passed
    Markets stabilizing and growing
    Housing market stabilizing
    Jobs coming back
    Financial reform on track

What will republicans offer voters in November?

This stat is kind of skewed - it appears to be saying that the gross from this year will be higher than GWB's net.

Well I would hope so. The key number is whether 2012 and 2016's net is higher than GWB's net.

    Cool headline.

    the small print:

Jobs up about 1 million through Bush's two terms (including effects of downturns at beginning of term 1, and end of term 2).

Jobs down 4 million in Obama's first year (ignore that). BUT -- UP 570K in first 4 months of 2010 -- So -- project the 4 month 2010 increase over a year and you have an INCREASE of 1.7m in 2010. Hence the headline!

In related news, the Cavs have swept the Celtics -- if you ignore their 4 losses and project their 2 wins over four games.

never project the short term into the long term when making an economic forecast. That is quite possibly the stupidest mistake anyone could make.

This is also a result of Obama getting the job handed to him in the middle of a total disaster. There was nowhere left to go but way, way up. If we can tell the haters (rightly) to shut up when they blame him for the mess that Bush left him, we have to take that into account as well when it warps his numbers to the good side.

Any president who inherited the job with the 2009 conditions would have had a ton of jobs lost and, unless they were beyond incompetent and started another Great Depression would gain a significant number of jobs over the rest of their term.

    Seriously.

If you want to talk about job creation, go ahead. But this "fact" is horrible.

    At what?

At being President? Sure. At creating jobs? Yeah, but that's sort out of necessity. It's hard to compare when Obama's number 1 priority was to avoid a depression and 1b was to create jobs.

I like the way you think...

Obama is 49 and has had 2 children in the last 9 years. Should he live to be 77 you can expect him to have 6.22 children.

I know... I've always been quite the math whiz.
