From Mitch Lawrence's latest ESPN column

"Several GM's were none too pleased that the league didn't come up with anything concrete as a way to get more shots and scoring. At the break, the 29 teams were averaging 80 shots a game. Ten years ago, the Jazz were at 85 attempts -- dead last. One GM was so turned off when Steve Francis went into his dribbling act off the usual isolation play in the Rookie-Soph's Game, that he started to boo. Really." [emphasis mine]

Doubtful, cause that would mean Mike would have to actually attend a game in the MCI center.

Seems like there is a lot of bashing going on, read several article about possible rule changes and they always say they want to remove illegal defense rules and maybe intorduce zones to stop 1on1 isolation offenses, like those used by the rockets. Also the two Chron articles yesterday also had digs at isos.

I bet it was Larry Brown booing (isnt he also a GM? or is it Croce?)...must be still pissed at Francis. [IMG]

Anyways I think removing the illegal defense rule would most likely decrease the scoring. Zone defenses would clog up a lane and even prevent big guys from dominating inside. There would be a drop in drives towards the basket in a zone defense. To increase scoring they need to make illegal defense calls even stricter. Open up the lanes by preventing teams from cheating and playing zones anyways.

Luckily for us, and the NBA, there was little to no support for zone defenses in those meetings they had over the All-Star weekend.

Think your right scoring would go further down, cause teams would play collapsing Pistons of the 80s defense. The situation would be made worse by the decline in the number of quality shooters.

The rumor I am hearing is the installation of a five second rule. That once a player enters a half court set he can't hold the ball for more than five seconds.

I'm all for this rule! NO MORE ISOs. ISOs ARE BORING!

That 5 second rule sounds good. Kind of like the Charles Barkley post-up rule they implemented a few years back.

But they'd have to make allowance for the end of a quarter/half/game, when a team holds the ball for the last shot.

That wouldn't be too hard, just say it doesn't apply in the last minute of the 2nd and 4th quarters.

Yeah a freaking ZONE defense would solve ALL of the league's scoring problems David Stern. Has anybody ever seen the Temple Owls play!?

Yeah, let's change the rules to make the game more "entertaining". It worked so well last year!

    That 5-second rule sounds terrible.

What good does changing the rules do when the refs don't enforce them anyway?

And what the hell does the league expect with these isos...what do you think's going to happen when you don't allow the defender to touch the guy with the ball?

    HONESTLY

I think Fran Blineberry said it best
The low scoring because of OVER COACHING
    Coaches calling EVERY PLAY
    being control freaks.

    I think better Defense too

Notice this would be the second rule
to stop the Rockets [actually the 3rd]
    Barkley rule
    This rule
and moving in the 3 pt line [cause the
rockets were KILLING everyone else in 94.
they thought if they moved it in then the
others would benefit and lessen the advantage
    of our great shooters]

Unlike MJ who got rule changes to help him.

Zone = boring ball. Look at Mutombo in All Star
game. . . just sit in the middle.

Man to Man defense is REAL DEFENSE

No wonder Refs miss calls cause u need a
fricking Reference guide nowadays to keep
    up with the changes.

how about this. . . better shooters?
    execution
AND LESS TICKY TACK ASS FOUL CALLS

    in a 3 hour game frick 45 ~ 75 minutes
    spent at the d*mn line

I agree, coaches are to "blame" for being too good at their jobs. The inception of a zone is such a moronic idea, I dont know why they even discuss it.
