Bombs Explode on Bali, President Calls Urgent Security Meeting

Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Bombs exploded on the Indonesia island of Bali in areas popular with tourists, killing at least eight people, according to the president's spokesman and local radio reports.

At least four foreigners were among the dead, said Jakarta- based El Shinta radio, citing witnesses. The blasts were almost simultaneous, Agence France-Presse reported, citing local police.

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is ``very concerned'' and has called an urgent meeting of security officials, said his spokesman Andi Mallerangeng in a telephone interview in Jakarta, without giving details of casualties.

Details of the blasts are still sketchy, with reports of two, three or four explosions. According to El Shinta, there were three bombs, killing eight people.

The bombs exploded one month after the president warned of increased terrorist activity in the region and two days before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Yudhoyono on Aug. 29 said he ordered agencies to boost security in the nation for at least the next two months.

A bomb in Bali on Oct. 12, 2002, killed more than 200 people, while a car bomb in front of the JW Marriot hotel in Jakarta in August left 12 people dead. A car bomb outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in September killed at least nine people and injured 182, blowing off the building's security gates and leaving a three-meter crater in the road.

Bali must be a heaven on earth or something. At least the Australians wouldn't mind going there.

I cannot wait to go to Bali now. It is heaven on earth. It's absolutely gorgeous. Everything is absolute luxury and dirt cheap. Security is going to be higher, and prices are going to be lower. Just remember, I'm not from AmeriKa. Not me. ;). No... I'm...uh...Canadian, eh. I'm going to ebay now to look for maple leaf gear.

Fool me again, shame on me. Why anyone would go there after the 2002 attacks and the strict drug enforcement is beyond me. They are targeting whitey. Don't go there.

On the contrary, I'd say if you love to visit Bali, this is the perfect time. The likelihood of another terrorist attack by the extremists would be statistically nil, given the extra security imposed by the Indonesian government. The local tourist industry would be bidding to woo back foreign visitors with possibly more good deals.

    The time is now.

Why would anyone go to NYC after the 2001 attacks. Plus the idiot cops are targeting colored folks. Don't go there.

Good point, I guess it would be safe to go now but not in a year or two, when security has died down a bit and another blast might take place.

I think I just found my vacation destination.

You will not regret it. It's awesomely beautiful. Everything (besides some hotels) is very cheap. The Balinese love tourists and are very friendly. Bali is an oasis in the desert of Indonesia. Truly one of the specials places on planet earth.

No offense but Bali ain't NYC. That's two attacks in a half the time between attacks in NYC. If I had to guess neither would be on my 'next vacation' list.

I went to Bali last year for my honeymoon. One of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Definitely not cheap though. Actually it all depends on where you like to hang out. The people there are super friendly and I feel sad for them. The unemployment in Bali is unbelievable and this new bombing is only going to hurt them further. :(

Good job NYPD. NY feels as safe as ever. To draw parrallels between terrorist and the police is a poor reach. NY is a major metropolis in the USA where Americans live. Bali is half way around the world. Haiti is cheap too. If you need people carrying machine guns for security while you tan on the beach, then best of luck.

What are the odds that you get hurt/killed in a terrorist attack in Bali as opposed to gettin hurt/killed/mugged while living in a major metropolitan area in the US?

You changed the scope from visiting in Bali to living in a major metro area. Not a fair comparison. Are the odds better that you'll get hurt in a terrorist attack in Bali higher than getting attacked in a city? Not sure but the odds of a terrorist attack in Bali seem to be higher than other tourist destinations - on my list anyway.

Don't laugh when I was in Malaysia last year I did tell people that I was from Canada to avoid having my food spit or possibly worse. When people heard my accent they seemed suspicious at first but when I told them I was from Canada they opened up. One old guy who by his looks was Indian and probably Hindu even quizzed me about Canada, luckily I had been to Calgary a few months before, and when he was satisfied I was a Canuck he said, 'Great its so nice you're not an American. American are sh*ts!'.

Now is still not a good time to be an American in SE Asia. Things got better after the tsunami and all of the aid that the US gave but unfortunately many people have short memories.

Name me of one region of the world today where it's "good time to be an American".

Yea, maybe, maybe not. But the odds of getting killed in an auto accident is FAR higher than getting killed by a terrorist. I wouldn't change my travel plans based on terrorist attacks, especially if they only occur once a year or less.

That was exacly my point. I am not arguing about 'terrorism' violence, I was simply asking about the 'odds' of being killed/harmed while living a normal life in an American city as opposed to visiting Bali or another destination for a week or some limited period of time.

If you die you die, HayesStreet, it doesn't matter much how it happened as far as the dead person is concerned :)
