Lots of car talk recently and would like to ask some advice myself.
I have a 1998 BMW 323is I bought in December of 1997. It's coming on 10 years and I'm thinking of upgrading. And it'll be a pretty big upgrade since I'm thinking of getting a 2007 Lexus LS 460.
But that's part of my problem. Though I can afford it, I'd kind of feel weird driving something like this to work. I'm afraid of office gossip behind my back and whatnot. My boss recently bought a Tundra and his boss bought a Toyota FJ Cruiser just last week. And I'm not sure how they'd take it if I cruised up in the Lexus.
Has anyone had experience like this? I'm not trying to flaunt anything. I just think it's a great car that I'd likely drive another 10 years. Should I buy it or just go for something a little less 'flash'?

Yonkers, its your life. In the end do any of those people matter? So what if they talk behind your back. If you live your life trying to please everyone else I feel sorry for you. Do what makes you feel good.

Buy what you want. Who cares what others think.

I'm probably the only person in my neighborhood who drives a Honda Civic. I've had the car for 8 years.

Yes, I know Dallas sucks. I didn't mean it like that. I'm just saying, it doesn't matter what other folks think of what you drive. You're not showing anyone up. I'm sure your boss makes more than you, and his boss makes more. They have the option to buy a Lexus if they wanted to.

I wish i had your issue.

Maybe I'm missing something....but why in the world are you worried? Your bosses ought to know how much scratch you make. Its not like you'll be surprising them or something.

Well, that's a bit of it though. I don't think they do make more than me. I'm a consultant and not an employee. And though they have a general idea of how much I make (since they pay hourly to the company that brought me in) they don't know exactly how much of that hourly rate goes to me. I just don't want no crap in 6 months when I ask to get my rates bumped up etc.
It's not a problem I've had to deal with in the past. But I've worked with sales guys who drive two different cars for that very reason. When they go out on sales calls they drive their slightly beat up cars. And when just to the office they drive their nicer cars. They told me this is because they had customers who have given them flak on prices etc because they 'must be already paying too much' considering the cars the sales guys are driving.
I dunno. Maybe I'm being too paranoid. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Seems like most people don't think it's a big deal.

Im with you Yonkers...I have many friends who run a business, but they dont drive their nice cars to work so that their employees dont ask for more money. If they drive up in a Porsche 911 it sends a completely different message than if they pull up in a Nissan Pathfinder.

Same thing goes for many dentists I know...you dont want your patients seeing your Benz out front...it gives them more reason to b**** and moan about the $1200 crown.

It's a common issue in the workplace.

However,in your case, given your job and the car you want, I think it'll be okay. Solid car, by the way...go for it.

How about a Lexus ES350? It's 20k less, and your bosses probably won't talk that much. ;)

You can't be serious. Do you know how many people on this board wish they could afford a Lexus!? I wish I could afford a Mazda, much less a Lexus. Get what you want and make yourself happy.

Screw it. They probably know how much you make a year and if you can afford it, why not? I'm pretty sure each one of them has at least one german (or even italian) car in their garage at home. The new LS is ....just wow.
