R I P I still remember when I was a kid and it first started, and how it seemed like part of the weekend was sneaking into the week...arguably the worst day of the week. And fwiw, ESPN's sportscenter may be ok but it's gone downhill over the years and all of ESPN's sports telecasts s u c k. So for me... MNF is over.
yeah i got a few questions about this. Its gonna be on next year, but just on espn instead of ABC. since they are basically the same company, will they keep same theme song, slogan, etc? i dont really see why not. its not like NBC can use those on their new sunday night broadcast. for people with cable, its not really gonna change things thaaaaat much, just different announcers.
It's really lost a lot of it's luster the last few years, mainly due to parity. What used to be sure-fire good games late in the season have turned into laughers. When you're stuck with Packers v. Ravens or Jets v. Patriots, people just don't care all that much. I'm really not too sad at the change. It'll be interesting to see what NBC can do with their new primetime gig, but I'm not holding my breath with Madden and Collinsworth being a part of it.
i'm way too sentimental, but i was sad watching it all end last night. that show's been on since before i was born. i have always loved MNF. don't think it will be nearly the event it was when it hits ESPN...and i'm assuming the music and approach will be different.
Well, ESPN and ABC are different animals for sure. I expect nothing from ESPN, so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. And the games have gone downhill, but it was still nice to be able to change the channel on Monday night and see a ball game, even if for just a few minutes...or maybe halftime.
This was the stupid part about it. They cancelled it because of ratings, but if they just gave ABC the flexibility to choose from a package of games, MNF would probably be fine. Imagine if Indy - San Diego was on monday night last week... Or one of the big playoff matchups from this past weekend (Tampa / Atlanta, NYG / Washington, etc). I'd guess ratings would have been pretty good.
There is no way that they could give ABC the choice of choosing from multiple games a week to play... there are way too many logistical problems with that. The problem is that with today's NFL you just don't know which team is going to do well from season to season. A team that is stacked up nicely with players could have a horrible season due to a stronger then normal conference or some key injuries... the NFL is so popular because "any given Sunday" any team can win, but that also makes it more of a feast or famine league, as in either you are really good, or are really bad with only a few average teams thrown in. Look at all of the 2 and 3 win teams this season... yet 10 wins won't get a team in the playoffs.
I remember watching MNF back in the late 70s early 80s. I always made sure I was watching the Halftime Hilights to get my Oiler fix to see what theysaid about them.
Sure they can. They almost did, in fact, until FOX And CBS protested because they'd be losing a marquee matchup. You give them a package of 3 or 4 games for each week, and they have to select from those several weeks in advance. Ticket holders for those select games are told when purchasing that the game may be moved to monday night. It got very close to being a done deal. In fact, next year, NBC is getting the option to move games from afternoon to sunday night games later in the season. Not quite the same as moving to Monday night, but nevertheless the same principle.
This was probably the worst year ever for the NFL in terms of primetime games.. every single one of them SUCKED.
for me it's because it is an institution. a bit of a tradition. it's a blast when YOUR team has a home game on MNF. i haven't had that experience in many years, obviously. of course, i still enjoy SNL, so what do i know!??
I have to watch the SNL news. As for SNL, they've actually had a few funny skits. You have to be careful w/ SNL, you think it sucks so you stop watching, next thing you know it's funny again.
Monday night football to Sunday night football and vice versa. I don't see what the big deal is. Were people crying when NBC lost broadcast rights too?
It has still been good for me, but my theory is that all the couch potatoes who watch reality TV and shows like 24, lost, etc.... Those shows get such high ratings now, that it makes MNF ratings go down and look bad.
I remember in Mexico I used to watch the games and wondered why I could see them on Monday, and then I learned Monday Night Football was a game that was played on Monday and at night, and that it was American football. And then I came here and kept on watching it because I had nothing else to do on Monday. Who cares if the team they chose that week was because they were good last season and then they sucked this year, and the other team beat them 42 to nothing? I once saw the Oilers play the Steelers after the Oilers tanked a year, and Givins put a move on Rod Woodson ( I think ) where Woodson thought Givins was going to go out of bounds and ran past him. Sweet. I went to a Bengals-Oilers' MNF game once where my Oilers blocked and recovered a punt in the endzone right under my nose and then Tony Zendejas beat them with a last-second field goal. I think it was in '89 or '90, and the score was 24-22 or maybe 27-24... What am I going to do now to harass my wife about not bothering me on Monday Night because there's a game? I cried when it finally sank in that it was the last one.
