New Study shows that use of three varieties of Genetically Modified corn caused liver, kidney and other organ damage in rats. The study made use of data straight from everyone's favorite grotesque chemical company, Monsanto.

    From the conclusion:

    From slashdot:

I already avoid HFCS...but this might just lower my affinity for corn altogether.

Good luck trying not to eat anything that isn't infused with Big Ag Corn.

You'll have to go almost completely raw vegan.

" OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! Why did I have to be born liking FOOD?!?!?!?! WHY!?!?!?!?!?!"

    or

"Mmmmmmmm... genetically modified corn... argghhhhhghghghghghgh..." would have worked, too.

I didn't read the study, but would this be the same as the old saccharine studies that showed that to equate to the amount they gave the rats to affect cancer rates basically meant you had to eat 5 lbs. of sweet and low a day for 20 years?

Corn is in fresh, organic beef and chicken? And turkey and buffalo?

No... But I have found that trying to stay organic is pretty hard when you don't have much money.

Even harder still finding "organic" that is truly what it says it is.

I'm pretty sure eating regular corn is bad for you, too.

ok well I'm an organic eater, but I still get my protein. No real reason to go vegan just to avoid corn.

Corn is extremely good for you actually. Not when it's been reduced down in factories.

    Two things about the article:

    1. They never say whether or not the three GM corn types that they are testing are currently being consumed by humans. Since two of the GM corn types generate their own pesticides, my guess is that they are not currently on the market, but its not mentioned as far as I can tell.

    2. The first sentence of the conclusion of the whole article is this:

"Patho-physiological profiles are unique for each GM crop/food, underlining the necessity for a case-by-case evaluation of their safety, as is largely admitted and agreed by regulators. It is not possible to make comments concerning any general, similar subchronic toxic effect for all GM foods."

It looks to me like they selected GM corn types that they knew would have a negative effect and tested them.

And of course California will use this to open up Ag companies to 'liability', the same as they have done for countless other products which are harmless in any real-world use.

Just like everything, this is all about $$$

Ever notice those labels which state 'This product contains a substance know to the State of California to cause cancer' ? That is not because anyone will get cancer from that product, they really can't, it would be virtually impossible. But once that label is on there, and then someone gets cancer, now you have someone you can blame, and sue. These scare headlines are typical of this kind of thing.

    Yay legal system abuse! Woo!

Anybody else think true tort reform would be the best thing to happen in this country in the last 50 years?

So in other words, 99.9% of corn and corn products are bad.

In Europe, they can only be used in animal feed (at least, last I heard - some european countries have banned it outright). They can be consumed by people in the US - companies do not even have to indicate it on labels.

No. All that statement tells you is that the researchers are not applying these conclusions to all GM food crops/species.
