    Mobley lambastes Bowen, refs
Web Posted: 02/25/2004 01:41 AM CST

    Mike Finger
    San Antonio Express-News

After spending the bulk of a seven-game road trip defending himself against all kinds of tawdry accusations, Bruce Bowen came home and finally found an opponent who refused to call him dirty.

But that was only because Houston's Cuttino Mobley had a different label in mind for the Spurs forward.

    Flopper.

Angered by the attempts of Bowen and Manu Ginobili to draw charging fouls — and especially by the officials' willingness to take them up on it — Mobley was more than eager to share his thoughts after the Spurs' 86-77 victory over the Rockets at the SBC Center on Tuesday.

"Tim (Duncan) deserves it," Mobley said of the Spurs' perceived respect from officials. "I don't know about the rest of them getting whistles every (expletive), I mean, every (different expletive) time they go to the cup or something.

"Manu Ginobili flops, Bruce Bowen flops. I'm no flopper. I play ball."

Bowen, fresh off wars of words with Toronto's Vince Carter and Minnesota's Flip Saunders, laughed incredulously when told of the most recent insult directed at him.

But he was understandably uninterested in offering a reply.

"I choose not to respond to any of that," Bowen said. "I've got enough of that going on right now."

Not that Bowen was the only one targeted by Mobley, who was called for two charging fouls on a night when he also had 11 points, seven assists and five turnovers.

Mobley seemed far more agitated by Tuesday's three-man officiating crew of Ron Garretson, Marc Davis and Derek Richardson.

"The refs are stupid for even buying into it," Mobley said, ensuring that he'll soon be paying a league fine. "You walk up to them and say, 'Did you see that flop?' And they say, 'Yeah, I know, I'll get it the next time.' But then they do it again about three or four times a game. It changes the whole momentum."

    But he wasn't finished.

    Not even close.

"Be consistent if you're a referee," Mobley said. "You take (refereeing) classes in the summertime. There's some calls I can't believe they even make. Then they go down to the other end, and it's just r****ded.

"Competence is one thing, but incompetence is another."

Mobley's exasperation wasn't limited to the locker room.

With 4:25 remaining in the game and Ginobili racing ahead of the pack for a long pass, Mobley shoved Ginobili from behind with a strong forearm, earning his third foul of the night. Moments later, he was seen jawing with Bowen.

But Ginobili said he wasn't bothered too much by Mobley's hard foul or his postgame comments.

"Sometimes people get frustrated," Ginobili said. "They say things they wouldn't usually say."

Or, as Mobley might have put it: frustration is one thing, but not being frustrated is another.

Im glad Cat got it off his chest so he can stop complaining and start playing some ball BUT that was some really bad refing last night

    Mobley should apologize.

There is no excuse for insulting the mentally challenged by comparing them to NBA officials. No excuse.

I have to give Cat some respect on that stunt. Took balls to call them out like that, especially since he's not exactly making the kind of dough an Iverson or a Shaq is to be getting fined by the league.

    How about this.

Ginobli made you his b**** cat...now stop whining and take a look in the mirror and figure out exactly how he USED you and don't let it happen again.

Spurs are just smarter than the Rockets, as a team.

I don't know......I kinda enjoyed reading that. Certainly he's allowed to vent his frustration, and using the word "r****ded" is pretty juvenile, but still funny. :)

The refs do make "r****ded" calls. There were several in the Spurs game. Floppers? Sure. Lots of players do it, and it is frustrating to watch. I know how frustrating it can be on the court too.

Sometimes you just gotta let it out. Talk on Mobley! Pay your fine, but at least someone heard you.

Not a smart thing to say. It was probably well worth the fine. But directing personal insults at refs isn't a good idea. He'd have been fine if he said the refs weren't on their game or something like that. But, he calls them stupid, r****ded, and incompetent. You don't think the refs are going to remember that the next time they call one of the Rockets' games? That's terrible diplomacy. He's just ensured that his next game reffed by these guys will be as bad as this one.

First off, the Rockets lost the game because they didn't get Yao the ball not because of the officiating which agreeably, was partial. If Shaq got suspended for a game for his comments, I don't see how Cuttino won't get suspended. Those were pretty strong words.

He probably shouldn't have used "r****ded," but I agree with everything he said. I said it in the game post and I'll say it again, the refs sucked this game and even though the Spurs played better, the refs didn't officiate a fair game.

I unfortunately have the pleasure of seeing Refs throw games everynight on my NBALP. The refs are falling for flops, anticipate fouls (therefore, most of them are bad calls), and some guys just can't get any respect (no names, Yao Ming, Steve Francis).

I literally can count 5 horrendous calls the refs made or missed lastnight just from the top of my head.

Sure, it wasn't the smartest thing to say, but it was true. That was a horrifically called game on both sides, but far worse in favor of the Spurs. It's not like Bowen doesn't have a reputation, either.

Well, both Vince Carter and Ray Allen singled out Bowen and called him a dirty player. I guess that you can even add Kobe's name on the list.

The officiating was absolutely horrible last night. Even Steve Kerr mentioned that the Mobley charge in the 4th quarter should be an easy blocking foul call.

SF3 was fouled badly at the end of 2rd Q, but no foul called.

Duncan pushed Yao to the floor in the 2rd quarter, no offensive foul called on TD.

Mo barely touched the ball when he was guarding TD and was called for fouls on two occasions.

Yet when Yao was hacked down low constantly by defenders, rarely did the refs blew the whistle.

It's a bad idea for a player to mouth off like Cat just did. Shouldn't the front office do this kind of dirty work?

Why are they going to find Mobley? Doesnt the NBA believe in Freedom of Speech?

Referees are like elephants. They have long memories. Anyone remember Clyde Drexler's ejection from the playoff game by that Hollins guy? Some refs keep a grudge. However, the league is different now in that refs will get canned if they don't do their jobs. The Rockets can actually produce a videotape of the game and send it to the league office to show them that their complaints are valid. Stu Jackson seems to be pretty impartial.
