boy did I have fun taunting Ginobilli last night. Pay back is a b**** you lame weaving, hand-off, backdoor cutting, that's the way basketball is meant to be played, abusing 37-yr old Reggie Miller, slap in the USA face MoFo!!!! Welcome to the league that plays DEFENSE!!! Taunting is easy in preseason. Especially in the f.r.o.n.t. r.o.w. center of the upper bowl. The booming voice from above. Gotta let Kenny and Cuttino know you're there. Preseason allows everyone to be heard. ooo....and I finally caught a T-shirt right after jamcracker said, "you know, we have a lot better chance getting t-shirts this year." One-handed....left hand, with beer being nursed by the better hand...and got to make a 5-yr old girl smile with a present. Then she opened it up, and it was like one of the new billboards....sigh...I really want that T-Shirt now. back to the game... I read many posts last night, many articles written in the paper, and no one mentions Mobley abusing Mr World Championship, 25-yr old Euroleague veteran, ready-for-prime-time, Emmanual Ginobilli. 5 steals by Mobley. No isos. 9-12 FGs with the pureness of midrange shooting evident in Boki's video portfolio and the driving and athleticism evident in Ginobilli's video portfolio. Did anyone see Ginobilli or Boki successfully place the ball on the court, much less get to the rim? And it is not like they were the focus of the defense. At least Boki didn't even try to drive, and at least he is supposed to be a pure shooter and 21 yrs old like Langhi was versus Gino being fully matured and still working on his outside shot. Another strong case for why Mobley would have helped us win that Argentina game, because he would have shown up to play for the U-S-A and that means playing freaking DEFENSE and nailing the midrange. So far, Ginobilli is making a strong case for why Dejan Bodiroga refuses to play in the NBA...reason, 6'5 shooting guards in the NBA who can't play defense and can't drive with speed are a dime a dozen, especially when they can't shoot as well as Reggie Miller, Ricky Pierce, Hersey Hawkins, Eddie Johnson, Dale Ellis...and on and on and on and on. bottomline: it is just one game, but in that one game, Glen Rice is so much the better shooter than Dan Langhi it is embarrassing to argue the point of potential, otherwise.
Ginobili looked like he was on methamphetamines, he was all over the place. He isn't going to be a big factor for them right away, just like it looks like Boki won't be right away either. TMo is going to get Boki's minutes and more...
i've been waiting for someone to post on "moses" ginobili. all i have heard here in san antonio is how "great" ginobili is going to be. david robinson said that ginobili "driving ability and passing ability is going to make us all better players". bah!!! i knew it was typical spurs media bullsh*t. i didn't see the game, so i can't comment directly on it. but looking at the box scores, ginobili was spanked like a porno ho. so, did he look lost on defense, or just unable to contain cuttino? and on offense, were his shots self-created bricks or in-the-flow bricks?
Boki did drive and get to the rim once, but clanged the layup. Neither he nor Ginobili looked good at all. In fact, Boki clanged all his shots (0-5) including all his three pointers (0-3)! So much for the shooting clinic he put on in camp. Hopefully, he'll get more comfortable and start knocking those down as the season progresses...

Originally posted by ricerocket Ginobilli isn't going to be a big factor for them right away, just like it looks like Boki won't be right away either.

the question is: at age 25, when is Ginobilli, the fashionable ROY-candidate, going to be factor? A 24yr old Tinsley came right in and led the league in assists for 2 months until the league realized he couldn't shoot and made him a non-factor by backing off him. At least Dan Langhi is 21 yrs old and has an excuse and a few practices of shooting "LIGHTS OUT."
verse, imo, the most striking difference this year is how Mobley is being used. He disappears in the 5-man game in a good way. He's offering many picks; he catches and passes or drives and dishes or just plain shoots it because he's open. You can't really say that he "abused Ginobilli" on offense, because Cat's offense was what the defense gave him, and that sexy man is NAILING a very pretty midrange jumper...don't leave him open. I repeat, don't leave Cuttino open. Gino and Boki both looked pretty poor on defense, and Gino's reported ready-for-primetime NBA Shooting Guard driving ability is not going to happen until he loses the respect of the league and people start guarding him with their peripheral vision while doubling Duncan. LOL!
Heyp, so do you think Gino is going to be a bust(12th man Langhi), overrated(serviceable bench option) or a suitable starter for the Spurs? I only got to see him a little bit in the World games, and he seemed decent, but he didn't really stand out. Of course a lot of Spurs homers down here are raving about him. Nice to be able to throw this in some of my friends' faces, even though its only a preseason game.
Cat played this way in college a LOT, especially as he never had to be the main man. I would think it's like riding a bicycle! Let's hope we're getting ready for the .. um ... the Tour de Francis (?)
Cat better look good when he's getting 45 minutes...a good portion of which were against Spurs scrubs.
He only played 36 minutes which was still too much. So what starter on the Spurs would have stopped Cat. Smith?
Now AT what is that supposed to mean? Do you know that Mobley was one of the top scoring guards in the league after the all-star break last year. He has nothing to prove. Plus he better not be playing 45 minutes.
Cat did have an excellent game. I think Boki is going to be alright once he settles down and gets some playing time. That may be tough if Rice and TMo keep hitting their shots, but if Tmo starts building a brick $hithouse like he did most of last year boki may get his chance.
So u were the one that caught the t-shirt. Congrats! I came up short by about 2 row from my closest Rockets T-Shirt cannonball. I would also like to thank pricesrt for the seats to last night's game. Best seats i've ever been in ( w/o movin' into the bowl during halftime).
CriscoKidd, Gino is no star. That's all I can really say at this point. He also cannot be described as someone looking to be a shooter. Like you say, there is nothing that really stands out. I'm not sure what he is trying to accomplish role-wise being a no-defense NBA SG. There is a vast gaping canyon difference between him and Cuttino in both offense and defense. Cat even looked more comfortable in a 5-man game than Gino. Cat looks like he knows when to pick, and (even better) who is coming around picks. Gino looked like he was learning everything new, and trying to fit in. There no way you can call him a "Bust" since he was a 2nd round pick three years ago. However, ROY-candidate...please. I am sure Dunleavy is showing vastly more fundamentals than Gino. Did you see Jr had 7 steals, Monday?? What's up with that? AT, what's up the "Cat better look good." Dude, just like game one, he looked great and in the flow. His midrange is not a hallucination. Don't leave him open. He is our best shooter, right now. btw: Cat played only 36 minutes, besides, if you haven't noticed this whole thread is about describing ALL the Spurs shooting guards as "SCRUBS." Bowen and Ginobili both looked like scrubs versus Cat. Your Cat a-hating is showing, again.
associated press......... The remainder of Ginobili's evening at the Compaq Center also proved to be a learning experience. He totaled six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 17 minutes, showing flashes of why the Spurs have high hopes for him while trying to get a feel for his new teammates. "We told him he didn't have to amaze the Western world by going out there and doing incredible things," Popovich said. "We just want him to get a feel for the game." Ginobili did have his eye-catching moments. On the Spurs' first possession of the second quarter, he crossed over Rockets guard Oscar Torres, blowing by his frozen fellow South American for a lay-in. A minute later, he took off from the baseline, split two defenders in the air and released a stunning reverse lay-up that barely slid off the rim. "I knew I wasn't going to have a great game," Ginobili said. "It wasn't expected. But it was OK. I'm happy with what I did. I hope Pop is happy — that's the main thing. "I'm happy to be back. I was missing it." Ginobili had been sidelined since spraining his right ankle in the semifinals of the World Championships on Sept. 7. The monthlong layoff has temporarily robbed some of his stamina — he looked winded after playing the first seven minutes of the third quarter — and he still can't completely jump and push off his right foot.

Originally posted by manuginobili A minute later, he took off from the baseline, split two defenders in the air and released a stunning reverse lay-up that barely slid off the rim.

Wow, that is the most exciting description of a missed layup that I've ever read. In fact, I think it is the only positive description of a missed layup that I've ever read. No wonder you Spurs fans are so excited. Who wrote that, anyhow? Some football fan trying to describe a near-miraculous, dropped touchdown pass.
LOL. You are right. Most game recaps don't talk about missed layups, unless they cost a team the game. I guess it's because he is a highly anticipated rookie. <marquee> HAPPY BIRTHDAY!</marquee>
