Mo says Houston is first option, but can't envision playing with Webber

Taylor-made fit -- The Rockets got a taste of what Maurice Taylor could bring them. But, Taylor said, it was only a taste. He plans to bring much more.

"That is not the type of season I can have," Taylor said. "It started bad and got better. But next year will be a bigger and better season. Next season, there will be no questions about who we get or not get."

This season, there are nothing but questions. Taylor is a free agent, and the Rockets are expected to be in the middle of the Chris Webber chase. Taylor said he would not be offended if the Rockets chase Webber but that he does not think there is any way they can play together. He also left no doubt about where wants to be.

"I've always said Houston is my first option," Taylor said. "It still is. Last year, I made a commitment to them. And from the way they played me, I felt they made a commitment to me.

"If they talk to Chris, I won't be offended. But I would expect the discussions with me to be serious."

As much as I'd like to have Webber, I'd really like to see the Rockts re-sign all their players. I've always had a win-now attitude, but I'd make an exception if it meant that the Rockets could keep guys like Mo, Moochie, Shandon, and Hakeem. I'd prefer that the Rockets go after some excellent role players and maybe draft a decent player.

I wish I could come up with a decent signature, but I can't. You'll just have to live with this one.

I don't know if I'm in the minority on what, but if it were me, I would re-sign all of our players, and use the cap money to shore up the SF and center position, and beef up the bench. I would rather have a core of Francis, Mobes and Mo, an athletic, slashing SF, a solid center, and a deep bench, then get Webber and hope we have enough money to fix up one position.

    ZRB,

I'm starting to feel the same way, in certain aspects. If Dream demands anything more than the the veteran's exception type money, I would let him walk. And if Shandon demands anything more than the league minimum, I would let him walk. [IMG] However, Mooch resigning according to most reports is almost a given, and Mo would love to if we commit to him. Bringing in Chris Webber isn't necessarily going to win us a championship... stockpiling talent is not always the answer. Look at Portland. We developed some very nice chemistry last year, and Mo has a lot of room to get better. If we get an enforcer inside, like a Curry or Diop from the draft or Mohammed from Atlanta, to go with an emerging SF (this role could be filled by someone in the draft, free agency, or Langhi) and let the team develop we might be a very tough team to deal with in the coming years. Webber is one of the top players in the NBA, and there's no doubt I'd like to get him in a Rockets uniform. But, if we can get Taylor and an enforcer inside for the same price, I think we should consider going that route.

This pretty much shoots down the rumors that Mo would play SF if CWebb came, which I never really believed anyway. I have always thought it would either be Mo or Webber, not both.

I'm all for Mo. That way we'll have more room to fix other areas of weakness (Small Foward.)

The Cat -- I like your second post a lot. The only thing I disagree with is letting Shandon walk if he wants more than just the league minimum. I think if Shandon wants more than Mobley got then it's a given you let him go, but I think he's a valuable player who busts his butt on defense, and the Rockets have very few of those. I'd still like to see something work out there.

I like Mo Taylor also -- have to keep in mind he's only 24 years old. I mean Shane Battier is almost 23. Taylor has a lot of basketball in him. At the same time, the guy isn't the presence that a Webber is. He's got work to do in the areas of rebounding, defense and (his biggest weakness) staying out of foul trouble.

If we can't get Webber, I hope we can unload Cato, move up in the draft to get a solid foundation piece (like a Gasol, White, or a center if we deal Cato), re-sign Taylor and Moochie and try to sign some defensive players who can fill holes on the team.

Hopefully he's worked on that a little. But, I'd rather have him and maybe Dream contributing something than Webber dissappearing come playoff time. We can get to the playoffs w/ either combo, but whether we win is a different story. I like CWebb, but he's got to perform in the playoffs.

Rocketbooster, great quote!!! At first, I to was enthralled @ the prospect of getting a CWebb. However, in the last several weeks I can't help but think that w/the right draft choices, signing our own FA, & picking up Jackson/LaFrentz/others the Rockets will be a force in the not so distant future.

Clutch I agree with you on Shandon, I think losing him would hurt the rockets more than most people would think. Shandon is a good piece to the puzzle especially when your going to war in playoffs.

Shandon is a good piece, but I think he is more of a 6th man, spark off the bench type player. An average starter, great bench player. If he would sign knowing he is not a sure starter it would be great.

One thing that scares the crap out of me...having BOTH Mo AND Cato on long term deals...

Mo has always been a "gonna" guy...he was going to rebound better and play better but the Clips held him back...now he's going to do better next season when he knows he is staying here (and has guarantted $)

If he doesn't pan out...having him and Cato locked into multi year deals absolutley KILLS the team for the next five years...

There's three things I want to see the Rockets do

    *Resign Shandon,Moochie, and Taylor
    *Dump Cato
*Move up high enough in the draft to grab Curry or Diop

I think Shandon's realizing that he's not going to get a better offer than what the Rockets have on the table, and if the Rockets sign him for the 4 plus million they're offering, they got a steal IMO just like they did last summer with Cuttino. With the new rules coming into effect, team defense is going to be vital, and Shandon could be the defensive anchor of this team for years to come. Naysayers out there, his defense is not overrated. He can flat out play on the ball defense, and unlike our other guards, sees man and ball.

I think Mo is in the same boat as Shandon. Teams are obviously interested in him, but a team like the Knicks isn't going to cough up alot considering the "soft" label he's attained through the years and his lack of rebounding productivity. I would say 6-8 million is probably how much it's going to take to resign Mo. Let's not forget that it took half the season for Mo to settle in and get used to his role on this team. I could easily see Taylor as a 18 and 6 guy, which is what most of us hoped he would have been this season.

My memories of Cato will be of him and Moochie with their ritualistic 3 point contest from the far corner before games. That's the kind of "rehab" Cato did. Do whatever it takes to get rid of him, and try to move up in the draft to nab Diop, Curry, or Woods.

Like Clutch said, it would be nice to pickup some defensive minded role players this summer, which is why I could see the Rockets helping out in a 3 way trade with the Magic in which we end up with Bo Outlaw, the eternal "possible" Rocket.

As much as I like Taylor, I think that any future built around him has to make certain allowances, those being 1) You'll have to compensate for his weak board work elsewhere, such as having a monster 5, or an inside 3, leaving you open to outlets, or you'll give up the boards like last year...Teams that need their guards to crash the glass are very vulnurable...I know Taylor can improve in this area, but are we prepared to count (as in $$$) on it? For all of Webber's troubles, he's always been a beast inside, and the only on-court compensation you have to make for him is reserving 20-30 shots and the left block for him every night...Plus, his passing would REALLY set things up for the perimiter guys, and maybe if we get Webber, we can eke out the room for Anderson, who's slashes to the net might be exploited more with C-Webb...
Again, I'm not down on Taylor, but I do think that he brings real negatives as well as his obvious positives...

What is the fascination with Diop? What has he done that makes him so great. He will be more like a Dare than an Olajuwon!

I second that. I'll take someone who wants to be here rather than someone who wants us to bump his salary up. At this level, there isn't much difference talent-wise between Mo and C-webb.
