If USC beats Michigan handlily, there could be a split national champ this year. that my opinion anyway. The BCS in the end was supposed to clear this all up...turns out it wont.
Yea... what does the 'M' stand for Tozai? I've seen you used it in every post, and I doubt it means 'mythical' since this thread is stating fact, not myth. Fill us in...
You know, I thought the BCS was supposed to solve the problem of split national championships? This may be the final nail in the coffin that causes the BCS contract to not be renewed in 2K5 or 2K6 (I don't remember the precise year.)
Because there is no playoff. Without a legitimate postseason and a champion decided by human beings (polls) and computers, the outcome isn't necessarily decided on the field (via a playoff)... hence its title as a "mythical" national champion, rather than actual national champion.
There. I hope USC wins. Maybe that'll be the final thing necessary for a playoff system to be established.
Oh god let's hope not. We don't need anymore backslapping from BCS honchos saying things like "whew, we got ourselves out of that mess!"
Ain't it funny how it always works itself out... I want USC to win, but I wouldn't be surprised if they lost, and the winner of LSU-OU is the clear cut #1. There hasn't really been a fluke winner since the BCS came about in 1998. You can say it didn't produce the clear 1 vs 2 matchup, but the best team seemingly always wins.
Even if that happens (and as a Michigan fan, I hope it does), it DOES NOT help the BCS dodge another bullet. The original intent of the BCS was to avoid having situations like this... where the outcome of more than one game affects who wins the National Championship. They wanted to create a guaranteed "super bowl" of college football, by making sure the MNC game would be between the top two teams in college football. That WILL NOT be the case no matter what happens in Pasadena. For this year, the BCS did nothing... this whole mess would have occured under the old system as well.
I thought the point of it was to have a clear-cut winner... If USC loses, the winner of LSU-OU would by default be pretty clear-cut.
Then you were wrong. The point of the BCS was to match the No. 1 and 2 teams in the country. The BCS has failed to do that more than it has succeeded.
Did you guys see Mike Tranghese, Big East Commissioner and head of the BCS on ESPN earlier?? The guy doesn't get it. His excuse is "Well, I guess we are going to have to go back and tweak things some." Trev Alberts (who I really don't like much) asked a great question to him about a contigency plan and Tranghese basically never answered him about it. Meanwhile, I am pissed that Miami has to play FSU again. Counting Labor Day 2004, these 2 schools will have played each other in football 3 times in a year...ridiculous. But these damn BCS bowls like the Fiesta are too worried about money to concern themselves with matters such as the fact that NEITHER FSU or Miami wanted this matchup. It's all about the bling bling, baby, lol.
