I know most of you saw the new soccer franchise that has arrived in Houston this past week. IM really excited as I live in California and know how good this team from San Jose really is. They had the best regular season record in the league last season.

If you check out the www.mlsnet.com site and visit the Houston section you will see a link for fan voting on the new name. Here are the options:

    Apollos
    Americans
    Bulls
    Buffalos
    Eagles
    Generals
    Gatos
    Houston 1836
    Lonestars
    Mustangs
    Stallions
    Stars
    Toros

What do you guys think of these names? I like the Lonestars, or Houston 1836!! Im curious to hear what you guys think.

    Houston Lonestars!

The Lonestars are a club team around Texas too. Good name.

I honestly feel sorry for those poor souls that dont understand the importance of soccer (futbol) around the world. If the US was ever to win the world cup, it would be the ultimate "in your face" to the rest of the world. It would even be more incredible than winning the Olympics.

    Oh well!

I like both The Toros and Lonestars but both are somewhat similar to the Texans, and there is already the Metrostars. Why did they have to choose some of the Texans old suggested names like Apollos and Stallions.

I voted for Toros, I wish we had a choice to put our own name. Houston Diablos sound nice.

So, is the name "America USA" no longer being considered?

I seem to remember that there was serious negotiation to bring the storied Mexican rivalry of Chivas vs. America and bring it to the U.S.

On another note, I just couldn't see the team being called the Generals. Too much losing comes to mind. After all, they are the Globetrotters infamous whipping boys. The name is cool, but imagine one bad year, and the tag would last a long time.

Frankly, I just don't like any of those names. I would go in a different direction, I'd go with the "Houston Energy"! I've heard that name being floated around.

I had been under the impression that a group headed by the Mexican club would purchase the team. Thus making it America U.S.A "Aguilas".

At this point America are out of the picture. They may buy the team in the future or try to get an expansion team in the next few years though.

Um... why? Have people who care about MLS earned my respect in some way that I'm not aware of? I rank MLS fans below fantasy football dorks and people who go to marching band competitions. I guess MLS is cool compared to the pro bowling circuit or Magic tournaments, but that's about all the credit I'll give it.

Um, you don't seem to get that MLS is not World Cup or even Euroleague caliber. Soccer is bad enough, but minor league soccer? I'll pass on that. And 99.9% of Houstonians will pass on it too. The only question is whether the team will average more attendance than the Comets.
