Well...he was brutal again today. When he pitches I just get this "we should've traded for Paul Byrd" feeling. Very disappointing and it'll end up costing us down the stretch.
Well, I just woke up, change the channel and saw 12-3 Atlanta. Now I see this Mlicki thread. I can guess what happend. Mlicki had a perfect game through 5, but got hurt. Some guy from the crowd came in to pitch and gave up 12 runs. Am I right?
Early on, he was just getting dinked to death. Nothing was hit hard, but they kept being just out of reach of our guys. Then he just lost it and they started shelling him. I wonder what will happen when Carlos comes back.
I'm scared. If Carlos has the same fate as Mlicki we're done for. I realize that Mlicki wasn't getting hit hard...but it all counts. He has strung together a number of weak outings recently. We really need a Paul Byrd or Paul Wilson type guy right now. Too bad we can't get one.
Milicki SUCKS !!!! Remember, this is a guy that was traded for Jose "can you see how far they hit the ball" Lima. Milicki should not be the 5th starter Redding should, at least he has a CHANCE of getting better. Once Hernandez is back it is all moot anyway. Oswalt, Miller, Hernandez, Saarlos, Munro Now that is a decent 5 man rotation. DD
I can live with it...but can Jimy? I'm not sure about that. I think he'll keep trotting Mlicki out there. Redding will not improve this year or maybe even next. I think he is 1 more full year from being ready at this level. But what do we do should Carlos falter?

I think he is 1 more full year from being ready at this level. But what do we do should Carlos falter? Mlicki is not bad for a 5th starter. Since his injury, he has had two miserable outings and two good ones (1 run and 0 runs given up). Before the injury, two of his three previous outings were quality starts as well. We went 0-4 in 4 of his 5 starts pre-injury -- but we only scored a total of 8 runs in those games. He's not as good as an Atlanta #5 starter, certainly, but he's better than what St Louis and Cinci run out there as their #5's and that's who we're really competing against. Between Mlicki and Hernandez, you have to count on one of them being able to perform reasonably well. It would be different if we were still 6 or 7 games out and really needed to win every game, but we're at the point that we just need to match the Cards and then outplay them head-to-head and we'll be OK. I agree on Redding - no way he should be on this team anytime this year.
What it really comes down to is do you want Mlicki or Munro? I'll go with Munro. Even in the "good" starts since his injury, Mlicki has not looked particularly sharp. Bottom line is that he has been extremely hittable, even when not giving up a lot of runs. Not good for a team trying to win a pennant.
I agree - I take Munro over Mlicki. If Mlicki performs decently, I wouldn't mind having Hernandez stay in the bullpen until another starter falters. That would REALLY solidify our middle relief if we had Hernandez come in for the 6-7th innings of critical games. If Mlicki falters, put him the long-relief role in the bullpen and start Carlos. That lets Cruz come in more often in shorter roles, which I think he can be useful in.
We'll just disagree about Cruz. Every time he does well for a few games I start to give him a real chance...then he blows it. Next time I'll look for a Cruz bobblehead to burn in effigy. I'm not convinced that either Cruz or Mlicki should be on this team in 2003. I think we can trade for Paul Byrd or Paul Wilson and do better than Mlicki. We can bring up a AAA talent to pitch a few times a year, have him give up some runs and we'll have Cruz.
