[MLE] Should Morey settle down with Wafer or experiment with other guys first?

Signing Wafer is going likely going to take more than half of the MLE, so there would not really be much left if the Rockets keep Wafer.

Do you think there are better options out there? I tend ot think so. I think there are a few better options the Rockets should offer a part of or the full MLE to first before settling down with Wafer. These guys include:

    1. Jamario Moon: He fits the Rockets mold of big defensive wings. He also brings athleticism (on both ends of the floor), which Ron and Shane do not have. Also a good rebounder.

    2. Gortat: Already discussed.

    3. Someone looking for more than MLE, but might end up settling for MLE (these are long shots): Candidates include Rasheed Wallace and Shawn Marion.

    4. Trevor Ariza: at least make Lakers spend more money on him than they want.

    5. Antony Parker (probalby 1/2 MLE or less): Kind of old now, but can shoot and score, and is more versatile than Wafer.

    6. Chris Andersen: Another effective big guy.

Wafer did fine, but is he really not difficult to replace? I'm thinking there's gotta be a Flip Murray type to be picked up somewhat cheaply once all the teams are done with their moves, no?

I think Rasheed Wallace would fit in great here, and more importantly keep him out of a Spurs jersey. I dunno, I don't feel like Les is looking forward to throwing the full MLE at someone. Especially for an extended time.

How about Stephen Jackson of Golden State in a sign and trade for Wafer and some change?

Simply not possible, you are severely underrating his value I'm afraid.

CH, you have the right idea. Management should explore the best value for the MLE. Ziggy's point about Les not wanting to go for a long contract is a good one.I hope they won't make a mistake, but exploring all opportunities is a must.
If we can't get better players, then Wafer can be re-signed relatively cheaply.

Healthy and motivated. Will he be willing to play alongside Yao is a difficult question to answer. My hunch is no.

    Good question.

    Nate Robinson?

Is Buike a free agent? I think he would be an upgrade to Wafer...

    Man...What a locker room.

Rasheed, Artest, Tmac...Battier and Yao can only do so much.

I think Sheed to Cleveland is going to happen. Him going there will probably sqeeze one more season outta Big Ben too.

But yeah...he'd be a perfect fit here if he's willing to shut-up and win.

Buike would be an upgrade. He has a player option for 2010.
Nate would be an explosive scorer, but I think he is a ball hog.

I don't know whether to love or hate the idea of Rasheed on this team. His post defense is still good but he's at the point where he just camps out on the perimeter and chucks three's on the offensive end.

Did anyone else notice the wording of the topic title or is everyone just too lazy to mention it?

Get Sheed and you don't have minutes for Landry or Scola, two of the most productive/value players at the position. Didn't he say he would rather retire than sign for the MLE?

I am personally hoping we can make a run at "Birdman"... I actually was playing football at Blinn College when he was playing basketball for us. He is the same player, raw, athletic, trashman, shot blocker... exactly what the Rockets need! He is athletic like crazy and can run and he is a legit 6'11" guy... He is from a small Texas town called Iona but, he apparently has/had mom issues (money) so maybe that keeps him from being close to home?

I'm all for using part of the MLE, but if I recall correctly, Feigen in the Chronicle (or someone else) has indicated that signing Ron at, say, $8-9 million, would put us around the luxury tax threshold and that the Rockets would be unlikely to use much, if any, of the MLE, if it puts them over.

CH, I think your comparison of Wafer to Ronald "Flip" Murray is a fairly accurate one. Players like them (scorers who do little else in the way of defense, ball movement, etc.) have a surprisingly low market value. Sure, some teams are stupid enough to throw larger contracts their way, but most smart teams will be cautious with paying more than moderate salaries so such type of player.

Unfortunately, the Rockets have already used their LLE on Barry and will not have another LLE under 2010. Wafer would have been a good candidate to have ended up begrudgingly accepting the LLE from the Rockets. Perhaps he gets it (or maybe even a decent chunk of the MLE) from another team.

Still, with the Rockets assured of going over the luxury tax if they re-sign Artest, Von Wafer will NOT be worth $3M+ of the MLE and another $3M+ of luxury tax.

I like Wafer a lot, but signing him depends on what the teams plans are for Ron and Tmac?

If you are trading one or both, then we need Wafer, if you are keeping both, then not so much.

I would let him test the waters to set a market price.....but we have not had an athlete as quick as him on this team in a LONG LONG TIME....and he wants to be here and work hard.

Sure he is a knucklehead sometimes, but only because he cares and wants to play.....I will take that kind of guy every day of the week.

    Talk about low expectations.

However, if a Flip Murray type if what you are looking for, we've already got one under contract for $20 million.

Remember, though, that Wafer is an UNRESTRICTED free agent. If the Rockets don't come with an offer in a timely fashion, and if another team makes a good offer early on, there is nothing keeping Wafer from just signing with the other team. It's not like he's restricted and the Rockets can just sit back and wait for the market to set his value. Still, I agree with your strategy, since overpaying for Wafer would have fairly dire consequences for the Rockets financially.
