Don't know the record, but considering how many years baseball has been around and we now have a DH I would say no.
1,529 by the 2010 Diamondbacks. That equates to 9.44 K's/game. Astros currently at 14/game after 2 games.
Strikeouts are on the rise. Prior to 2005, there had never been a season where more than two teams had struck out 1,200 times. In 2012, 18 teams struck out at least 1,200 times. You can't use the long history of the game as reason why the record won't be broken. The records for fewest strikeouts came in 1921 (308 by the Reds). The highest numbers have all come in recent history.
I don't think Pena and Carter will be in the lineup for the rest of the year which should lower our total.
I looked this stat up last year in 1988 only 3 teams struck out over 1000 times. In 2011 all but 3 teams struck out over 1000 times. This has been an upward trend for a while now.
maybe AL, but I think neither. Mostly because the worst offenders will be out of the lineup either by trade, demotion, or release to give others a chance
I'm hoping they're replaced by guys who at least see pitches as opposed to these older guys who are unsigned because they're feast or famine types. Too many of Spoiler
The 2010 D-Backs struck out 24 times in their first series of the season. The 2013 Astros struck out 43 times in their first series of the season.
If some of the guys who serve as the centerpieces of our lineup (i.e. Altuve) do not learn to have a little more plate discipline, we definitely have more of a chance to break that record.
