And Woody (the reason we don't have a 2nd round pick).

This is definitely one area I will put some blame on Purpura and Drayton. Had they offered arbitration to Pettitte and Clemens, we would have gotten draft picks from the Yanks. Certainly their 1st and 2nd round pick. I'm not sure what they were thinking there.

They were concerned that they'd accept arbitration and get huge salaries and tie up all their funds.

By the way, this draft is PAINFUL.

It's usually lightning fast. This year it's awful. 15 picks in an hour. Usually they do a whole round in that time.

It was possible but unlikely, especially with Clemens.

You're right about the other thing though...aren't they usually in about the 22nd round by now? Leave it it ESPN to screw something else up. I don't ever remember hearing anyone saying that the baseball draft should be televised. It's not like the general public knows who these people are like in football and basketball. You're not going to see them for 3 or 4 years, typically, at best.

All the lament over no picks... where was the exaltation when we got extra picks for losing Kile, Randy, and Beltran in free agency?

Oh yea, that's right... everybody was criticizing the orgnaization for that as well.

Its not a given that both Pettite and Clemens reject arbitration... definitely not Clemens. Why would he reject a guaranteed 24-26 million dollar deal?

And then, with the Astros on the hook for that, do they even bother to go after Carlos Lee? Can they do anything at that point?

With the 111th pick in the 2007 MLB Draft, the Houston Astros select third baseman Derek Dietrich of St. Ignatius Highschool, somewhere in Ohio.

    GATORADE BASEBALL POY
    OHIO – DEREK DIETRICH

RISE selects St. Ignatius High School standout as Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year

In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, Gatorade joined with RISE Magazine to name senior shortstop DEREK DIETRICH of ST. IGNATIUS HIGH in Cleveland as its 2006-07 Ohio Baseball Player of the Year.

At the time of his selection, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior shortstop was hitting .449 with eight home runs and 37 RBI to go with 25 runs scored, nine stolen bases, a .913 slugging percentage and a .591 on-base percentage. An Aflac All-American and a First Team All-State selection in 2006, Dietrich recently carried St. Ignatius to the Division I, Region 3 district title. The Wildcats owned a 21-6 record entering the regional semifinals of the state tournament, scheduled for May 24.

Dietrich has maintained a 3.65 GPA in the classroom. He serves as a peer tutor with his school’s Community Action Team and is an active volunteer with the St. Ignatius Arrupe Neighborhood Partnership Program, an outreach effort focused on building the self-esteem of inner-city youth.

“Derek makes our team better in so many different ways,” said St. Ignatius head coach Brad Ganor. “Everything he does, he does well and it’s been fun to watch him grow as a player and as a person. He’s truly a rare baseball talent.”

Dietrich will attend Georgia Tech on a baseball scholarship this fall, pending the outcome of Major League Baseball’s June Amateur Draft.

    More info....

    Scouting Report:

    http://www.aflacallamerican.com/2006/Roster/index.cfm?id=131

    Player Profile:

    Derek Dietrich
    Right-handed pitcher/3rd base
    6' 1" - 190 pounds
St. Ignatius High School (Parma, OH)

    Team: East Team
    Hometown: Parma, OH
    College: Undecided

Somewhat of a throwback-style player, Derek Dietrich has a good feel for all phases of the game. He has good hands, a strong arm in the field, and a quick lefthanded swing at the plate that elicits above-average raw power. Derek batted .434 with four home runs, 14 doubles and 33 RBI’s in 76 at-bats as a junior, helping lead Saint Ignatius High deep into the state playoffs. Derek also pitched in relief at Saint Ignatius, picking up two wins and five saves in eight games on the mound. He participated in Perfect Game's National Showcase in Arkansas in June. Derek batted .494 with five home runs, 31 RBI’s and 40 hits as a sophomore at Saint Ignatius. He had four saves and a win as the team's closer. Derek is the son of Rick and Cathi Dietrich. Cathi's father, Steve Demeter, played, coached and managed professionally, debuting with the Tigers in the majors in 1959. In tribute to his grandfather, Derek wears traditional stirrups, which earned him the nickname "old school".

Looks like I just found another reason I don't like the way MLB works, on top of having no salary control (ie salary cap).

Losing draft picks, HIGH draft picks in fact, just to sign free agents that were offered arbitration. What crap...

That being said, Purpura is definitely not off to a great start these first couple of seasons. Sure, he got Lee, but that's really all he's done and he gave up a lot to get him. We don't have a whole lot of potential currently in the minor leagues, and our stars are hitting their primes. Long-term it's not looking so great.

From a Lamar Grad who watches 10+ games a year, Colin Delome is a stud. Really, he was the second best hitter on the team this year, but that was a team with an .835 team OPS, and Michael Ambort hasn't settled into a position since he had elbow surgery. Delome's a very good outfielder who can play centerfield. He's a prototypical #2 hitter. He's a great contact hitter with some speed that shows a little power sometimes, too. Scouts compare him to Steve Finley, and I can definitely see that.

You mean we're starting to pick local kids? Pupura still nedds to get canned. Yesterday!

If we continue this suckitude season we better not sign a Type A free agent coz we might loose a top 10 pick.

    MLB draft logic blows.

Free agent compensation (losing draft picks) works well in that it helps small market teams replenish their system when they lose valuable players. It was tweaked this year to stop hurting other teams as much.

Also, talent is available in all around of the baseball draft. It's completely different than the NFL where only some late round picks work out. There are so many players in baseball that get drafted that where they are picked is almost irrelevant. They fall for all sorts of reasons, including the fact that they don't have to sign with a team that drafts them, they can go to college (if they are hs players), they can hold out and then re-enter the draft the following year, etc.
