To New York Yankees: Curtis Granderson
To Detroit Tigers: Austin Jackson, Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke
To Arizona Diamondbacks: Edwin Jackson, Ian Kennedy

Wow, what a deal. Love it for the Yankees. Here's a great breakdown from Fangraphs:

He's a fantastic (and underrated) player. I'm stunned this deal got done as quickly as it did.

And baseball sucks again because small market teams eventually cave in to financial troubles and their stars go to New York, LA or Boston.

The Tigers got good prospects in this trade. And one of the stars of the deal went to Arizona, not the teams you mentioned.

    But whatever. :)

When Joe Mauer officially is in pinstripes, I'm done with MLB for good, and I will refrain from every discussing it again.

Yankees have been wanting Granderson since last year, but they just engaged the Tigers yesterday. The three way deal came together fast which is amazing considering three ways are hard to pull off and take a long time that's what she said.

I understand the appeal of Scherzer, but in reality, Jackson's only 9 months older than Scherzer, and Jackson was substantially better last year, even ignoring the fact that he was in the AL. If Jackson improves by changing leagues - and if last year wasn't a fluke - he could easily be a top 10 pitcher in the NL and arguably the best player in the deal.

If Arizona gets the 2009 Edwin Jackson then lookout.

    Webb, Haren, Jackson

Curtis Granderson is one of baseball's best centerfielders.

Edwin Jackson's FIP indicated he had a lot of luck last year. But the bigger problem is that his salary is rising. He's a guy Arizona is going to need to get rid of in a year, two at the most. In exchange they gave up a guy who is cost controlled.

I disagree with the idea it was a mess for them, but I think they gave up too much.

Probably a bad offseason to be holding Max Scherzer in an NL-only keeper league then, eh? Damn.

i fully expect a fire sale of all the young talent we have on the reds in about 4-5 yrs. votto, bruce, volquez, cueto, bailey, brandon phillips has sparked interest already. i will be in the same boat as you at that point in time.

He's a great defensive centerfielder. Offensively, his best year was 2007 and he's been progressively worse each of the last two. He had an OPS of 0.780 this past year, which is a little below guys like Cody Ross or Denard Span. He's living off the name of one great year and has otherwise been pretty good, but not great. I feel like he's kind of like the new Vernon Wells.

That's certainly a very real problem. I don't know anything about Arizona's finances, but if they can't keep him long term or win big with him soon, they gave up a lot in Scherzer.

Similarly on the flipside, while I don't think Granderson is great, he's a steal for the price the Yankees got him at. That's a great way to lock up a position and not really have to worry about it going forward. They already have great players - they just need pretty good and relatively cheap ones in the other spots, so it fits them perfectly.
