Are there any MMA fans here? MMA is my favorite sport and I was wondering if there were any other fans here. Pride will be holding Bushido 10 on 4/2 2006 and has a very strong card consisting of a lot of good fighters. Just a heads up that there will be 3 of the fights that will not be on the North American PPV but will instead be shown on FSN on April 9th. These are the fights scheduled to be shown on FSN. Phil Baroni vs. Yuki Kondo Mark Weir vs. Denis Kang Bout # 3 (To Be Announced April 2nd) Also Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has signed with the UFC. It has not been announced yet, but I got it from a good source. I expect the announcement to be made either at UFN April 6th or UFC 59 April 15th.
The old Rampage died around the time he had his miraculous religions conversion and then got brutalized badly Silva shortly after in the GP Finals. It's been downhill from there.
According to an article I read on a Chinese website a few weeks back, the best MMA guy in the world right now is a twenty some year old Russian dude. In front of a partisan crowd in China, using entirely traditional Chinese MMA, he beat the crap out of 4 Chinese MMA'ers -- each one was said to be a national champion in his own right with specialty in certain method -- and barely broke a sweat. I heard though in a previous competition Chinese MMAer easily humbled a former private guard of Russian President Putin.
While a subject of debate, the best overall is likely Fedor Emilianenko, but he's about 30 and hasn't fought in China, recently or ever, to my knowledge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedor_Emelianenko
The MMA I saw from the link above is not even close to what I had envisioned. I thought the "Matial Arts" (you know Sam literally there is character for chactacter counterpart in Chinese for these two words) had at least something to do "Chinese Martial Arts," but hell no the dude wasn't even mentioned by the Chinese article.
Rookie! In the lingo of the sport, MMA is "mixed martial arts", which means organized "freestyle" competitions like the UFC or PRIDE or any number of smaller organizations. Stuff like Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwan Do, Judo, etc are referred to as "TMA", short for traditional martial arts. Anyway, I imagine that's a hard distinction to translate to chinese.
Fedor is the greatest MMA fighter to ever live. This is not debateable. And I agree with you Sam I mean I don't know if it was his religious conversion or just Wanderlei kicking his ass 2 times, but he has not been the same fighter he was earlier in his career. I think that this will be a fresh start for him and because of his style he is MUCH more suited to fight in a cage. I hope he will get back on track and eventually we will get a Liddell vs. Rampage 2.
Almost, but some Eastern Martial arts (Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu) fit into both categories and are not classified as "traditional" becuase they adopt tactics from other disciplines and have continually evolved more as 'sports' than as 'arts', though elements of artistry remain. It's a shame, he was definitely one of my favorite fighters. He's still young enough, hopefully he puts it back together.
well overunderup you picked a good fighter in mentioning Georges St. Pierre. He is my favorite fighter and IMO the 2nd best P4P fighter behind Fedor. He will avenge his only loss when he faces Matt Hughes next for the WW UFC title. He is definately the best WW in the world and he just beat BJ Penn who I consider to be the 2nd best WW in the world. He will make a great champ and hold the title for a long time. And Xenochimera I am not sure if you have ever heard of a fighter named Yves Edwards, but he is one of my favorite fighters and he has a gym here in Houston that teaches his style of MMA (called thugjitsu) and according to him it consists of a little bit of wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing, muay thai. They also have classes teaching just jiu-jitsu and muay thai. I believe it is called revolution dojo.
I love St. Pierre's game. I watched him dismantle Frank Trigg ... that was abuse. I was actually shocked when he lost to Hughes... I thought he'd take him. For some reason I like Rich Franklin. Cool guy... intelligent... and can stomp a mudhole in you. lol. Any of you guys interested in the Matt Hughes/Royce Gracie matchup? It's still a trip to think the guy took on 3 people in one night to win the first UFC championship. But he's something like 39 or 40 years old now. Legendary family.
Hughes was extremely lucky he beat St. Pierre. One mistake cost Georges the fight when he basically dominated the entire round. The second fight will be a different story. As for the Hughes/Gracie fight I am looking forward to it, but not what will happen. It will be nice to see Royce back in the octagon, but this is a completely different UFC than the one he fought in. Basically before it was just a no holds barred anything goes match where he was able to use the cage and I actually watched an old fight last night between him a Kimo where he grabbed onto Kimo's hair and held him while punching him and ended up ripping a huge chunk of hair out of Kimo's head. It was unbelieveable what they used to let them do. All fighters are much more well rounded now and Royce stands almost no chance against Hughes. At first no one had ever seen the type of fighting that Royce did (jiu-jitsu) and so many people did not know how to defend it, but now if you step in the octagon you better know some about jiu-jitsu because almost every fighter trains some in it. I expect for Hughes to brutally ground n' pound him to a KO.
Well, did you read recently that the claimed best fighter in Russia, he's the body guard for the president of Russia too, challenged Chinese Kung Fu in Canton, and got his azz beat two times in a flick just like that? I mean literally, the Kung Fu guy took so little time and engergy that once he got the russian dude, and kick him once, he's down and can't even stand up anymore.... And just a week ago, president of Russia, a martial artist study under Shaolin Monks, just visited China, and one of the thing that he wanted to do is to vistit the oldest shaolin temple in China, and experienced the real Shaolin culture and Shaolin Kung Fu. The Shaolin Kung Fu is amazing, it's where all martial art first started, the monks can stand upside down with one finger, yes, flip your body over, stand still with ONLY one finger.
Oh yeah? Did you just hear that some Irish guy beat up everyone of the Shaolin Monks in under a minute and then after the fights they all expressed to him that they wanted to study his style??? I'm mean literally he just beat everyone of them up at the SAME TIME. I would love to see Chuck and Rampage in the Octagon. I'm also pretty excited to see Sylvia versus Arlovski coming up. That should be a good one.
Oh yeah, I wonder whether those shaolin monks that he beat up are real or just fake shaolin monks everywhere in the world, if indeed they're real monks, they must be 2 years old monks, because a 5 years old monk is enough to take him down in a minute.......or 30 sec... But, I know u just make this up, and what I said is 100% true. Anyway, here's the website containing pictures of Putin's visit to Shaolin. I agree, I thought GSP was giving him a hell of a fight, then out of nowhere... BAM... it's over. But then that's part of Hughes' greatness. He should've been unconscious against Carlos Newton, then out of nowhere he comes up with that slam that puts Newton out before he himself blacks out. That was great. He's not a favorite of mine, but there's no denying the guy is a pretty good champ. I hear you on the Gracie/Hughes comments. I hope it's competitive and heck, I hope somehow Gracie can pull one out. He's an MMA legend and a class guy. I was pulling for Tank Abbott in his return match against Frank Mir 3 years ago after a long layoff, but he was destroyed in no time. I only watch UFC... don't know anything about the other versions of MMA leagues. Is K9 or Pride considered to have better fighters than the UFC? I remember watching a guy nicknamed Cro-Cop in one of those leagues... that dude was a beast.
