Astros Field will become Minute Maid Field, sources told the Houston Chronicle today ahead of a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. At the conference, Astros owner Drayton McLane is expected to announce he has struck a deal with Coca-Cola, which owns the Minute Maid orange juice line, for naming rights to what was formerly Enron Stadium.
Yep, its official... Houston has dethroned San Diego as sole owner of the worst stadium name ever (previous champ: Qualcomm Park). We're #1!
no kidding. I'm sure the team wants a reputation as a bunch of Minute Maids. I hate to even see what sports columnists will write every time they lose. This is the problem when you let just anyone bid for naming rights.
By itself the name is kind of "blah." I would've been happier with "Astros Field @ Minute Maid Park. Incidentally, the soda rights (to MM and Coca Cola) were rolled into the naming rights deal. Fun, fun...more ways to disguise the actual bottom line.
I fail to see how it's any worse, or better, than any of the following: Pac-Bell Park Tropicana Field Pro Players Stadium Bank One Ballpark Coors Field Comerica Field Safeco Field Miller Park Network Associates Coliseum Turner Field Edison Field or countless others.
ROTFLMAO!!! I hope I can get over this... Minute maid field...say it a few times to your self...yea it gets worse each time, huh?
The bottom line is the only thing Drayton McLane cares about. He obviously doesn't care about bringing a World Series championship to Houston. He is beginning to make John McMullen look good, and that is a hard thing to do.
It's not. And it's certainly better than that shady organization that had their name up there before. People need to get over it. Any corporate name is going to suck, so just deal.
Coors Field & Miller Park would have been alright. personally i think it should have been named ball park frank's field
Or Wrigley field. I can't belive the Cubs stadium is named after a chewing gum. They're sure gonna be the laughing stock of the league...
The bottom line is the only thing Drayton McLane cares about. He obviously doesn't care about bringing a World Series championship to Houston. He is beginning to make John McMullen look good, and that is a hard thing to do. Absolutely!! If only Drayton would pay to get star players like a Jeff Bagwell or a Craig Biggio or Moises Alou, they would be able to hit and win in the postseason. Oh wait a minute, those All-Stars didn't hit? Damn, that must be Drayton's fault too. The Astros and Braves are the only two NL teams to make the postseason at least 4 times in the last 5 years. No other team's even come close. Yeah, too bad we don't have a commitment to winning.
<img src="http://images.chron.com/content/news/photos/02/06/05/mmp.jpg"> Gotta hand it to them, though. That orange with the baseball threads on it is pretty clever.
Right. Because if the field name wasn't Minute Maid Field but instead was We're Gonna Win The World Series Field then it's clear that the Astros would win it all this year. Damn that McLane... Please explain to me how the name of the field in any way shape or form has any influence at all on the Atros performance. I'd love to hear it.
Horrible, just horrible. This is easily the worst name for a stadium in the entire league with Tropicana and Network Associates following closely behind our Minute Maids. Drayton, you're a fuggin sellout.
