This thread will mainly focus on waiver claims and minor trades. Significant enough trades (ie... I'm not even sure who's significant at this point)will get their own threads.

Jason Martinez (@mlbdepthcharts): #Astros claim OF Che-Hsuan Lin off waivers from #RedSox. Lin was designated for assignment last wk.”

    LINSANITY continues!!!

He'll likely compete for a backup job. Went 3/12 in 9 games with the Red Sox this year. Been a better defender than a hitter throughout his career.

Lin is supposed to have a cannon for an arm. Sounds like a good late-inning defensive replacement, if we can get some late-inning leads to protect.

I would think you would be non-tendered rather than DFA'd, but that is just semantics. I'm not surprised, as I think it was between him and Moore, and I felt Luhnow liked Scott Moore better.

Your post comes across like you think he (Luhnow) is done.

No, lots of moves to make. He may still rid us of Greene/Moore/Laird, but one of those along with Downs was a guaranteed gonner.

That makes 2 guys from the Bourn trade that are gone already for nothing.

sunk cost. gotta stop thinking about the Bourn trade.

Are we better off letting Schafer go and letting the young(er) guys play? Yes. Therefore, he's gone

I'm not complaining. I've been done with Schafer for a while. I liked his inclusion in the trade to try and hit lightning in a bottle (wanted one of the big 4 to come with him), and Juan Abreu was always a long shot as a 27 year old prospect.

I'm going to hold out hope that Clemens can develop into something special with his stuff (I'll settle for another Bud Norris though). Hope Obie can also make for a decent back of the rotation player. At least give me something.

Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart): Astros outright LHPs Fernando Abad, Sergio Escalona and RHP pitchers Edgar Gonzalez, Jose Valdez and Kyle Weiland.

Weiland has been placed on Triple A OKC’s roster, while Abad, Downs, Escalona, Gonzalez and Valdez all become unrestricted free agents.

What does that mean for Weiland? I assume he'll still have a chance to compete for a spot in the rotation?

    Waiver claims:

Brian Smith (@ChronAstros): #Astros claim Arizona's Sam Demel, Jake Elmore off waivers; outright Abad, Escalona, Gonzalez, Valdez, Weiland http://t.co/4bCnjrvl #MLB

Demel is from Channelview, but graduated from Spring High. After mainly appearing with the D-Backs in 10 and 11, he only appeared once in the majors last year.

Elmore hit .191/.247/.250 with 7 RBI in 30 games with the D-Backs last year. Hit .344/.442/.465 with 1 homer and 73 RBI in 108 games with AAA Reno.

Smith replaced Zachary Levine as the Astros beat writer for the Chron.

Waiving Abad, Gonzalez, and Valdez opens three spots on the 40 man roster. (Escalonan and Weiland were both injured and off the 40 man roster but were due to come back). Four more 40 man roster subtractions were del Rosario, Downs, Snyder, and Schafer.

Astros did add Che-Hsuan Lin to the 40 man roster. Demel and Elmore will also be 40 man additions, right?

Demel, 27, spent nearly his entire 2012 season with Triple A Reno, posting a 4.07 ERA (30ER/66.1IP) in 56 relief appearances. He allowed just a .237 opponent’s batting average, while striking out 75 hitters in 66.1 innings pitched. The native of Channelview, TX, made one appearance for the Diamondbacks this season, but has appeared in 72 Major League games over the last three seasons (2010-12) for Arizona, posting a 4-4 record with two saves and a 4.95 ERA (35ER/63.2IP).

Elmore, 25, hit .344 (144×419) with 30 doubles, 73 RBI, 32 stolen bases and a .442 on-base percentage in 108 games for Reno this season. He made his Major League debut with Arizona in August and would go on to play in 30 games for the D-Backs, including 14 starts at shortstop and one at second base. He was named a Pacific Coast League Mid- and Post-Season All-Star this season.

I think this means that Weiland still has options left. I am guessing that Weiland will now be exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

That does indeed appear to be the case. I didn't know you could do that.

I'm somewhat surprised, though I did consider it a possibility. With what he is, coming off shoulder surgery, and now an older prospect, I won't miss him if we lose him.

Another day, another 40-man spot opened.
