Let's give it up for Mike Wilbon from PTI, he's about the only guy on ESPN who ddn't think Yao Ming was going to be a bust. He said he was going to call and wake up Tony Kornhieser(sp) at 2 a.m. everytime Yao had 25 pernts and 10 boards. They even have a lifesize cardboard of Yao in the background. Also did anyone hear Tom Tolbert last Friday during the Rockets/Sonics game, he said that Yao Ming would be a good player but that he would never be a dominating player in the league, even saying that Yao would be a 18/10 guy, not a 25/12 guy. Adrian War UH. War Stevie Franchise. War Yao Ming slamming in Saqs' face, dropping him to the paint like a bad habit, and then giving him a hand up
Anti Yao who claimed Yao would be a bust are now saying that he would not be dominant. They may or may not be right, but at least admit they were wrong about Yao. Guys like Tolbert will never admit they are wrong. They are just hoping for Yao to suck to not discredit them. How sad........
Him, as well as Walton, and that one writer from Around the Horn, I think his name is Bob Ryan. And to a lesser extent, John Kruk who said to just give the guy some time.....while the others on the show were quick to bash. Yeah, it went from calling him a "bust" to "he won't be dominant". If he continues to improve his game and consistency over the years it'll be "he won't ever average 30-20-8".
Bob Ryan has been trumpeting Ming for months in Boston. The guy deserves a lot of credit for sticking his neck out in the national spotlight. I hope he's rubbing it in the faces of all the naysayers. ugh... "Rome-speak" has infiltrated this board.
wasnt it tolbert or tolbert or maybe sean elliott who was saying "he wont be anything like the dream". yes i am aware of the first quote, but this was different, i believe
What exactly does the "war (something" phrase come from anyway? There was a time when I listened to Jim Rome everyday. But even then that phrase had been around on the show for a while. Anyone know the story behind that?
tolbert says plenty of stupid things. I would say if anything can be determined by the few games Yao has played in the league, it is that he will be dominant.
Tolbert is the stupidest so called BB expert I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. The guy is clueless.
But even Bob Ryan picked Bradley NOT Yao Ming, when he was asked to pick one just before the Rox vs. Mavs game. He said that was just for one game though.
Yeah, he didn't want to go out on a limb...he was playing it safe. Yao will be able to get 25/12 if he was on a weaker team (Bulls). But for the Rockets I would rather he get 15/15 (add 4 blocks a game).
Is Wilbon the guy, kind of looks like an African-American (how PC of me!) eraser-head with glasses, who has a show (ESPN2) with a middle-aged bearded white guy, and they devote 30-60 seconds to sports topics etc etc? I think he is, because he slammed pretty good on the other guy, (wish I could remember his name), who had written one of those arrogant Ming's-gonna-suck-because-I-say-so articles. To his credit, the anti-Ming guy was making up ludicrous excuses (as a joke) to cover his error in judgment (the blowhard's way of apologizing, I guess), while Wilbon was jack-slapping him: "You were as wrong as wrong can be, I told you Ming was gonna be good..."
I remember back in the 80's (I think) during the NBA draft, the Spurs took Alfredrick Hughes in the first round and Bob Ryan commented sarcastically in disbelief, "This guy is a CBA lifer." He was right then too. Houston Native
Yes. "Other guy" = Tony Kornheiser, ESPN radio and TV personality + Washington Post columnist "Show on ESPN" = Pardon the Interruption, best non-sports news show on TV
I love it when Bob Ryan is on tv and he gets all fired up. He looks like his head is about to explode. The man does know his hoops and he was right when he said Yao would become a great player.
ESPN 5:30 EST weekdays I really don't think that Kornheiser thought Ming would bust that bad. They just need to conflict in opinions sometimes to make the show good. Kornheiser is better as a bull****ter....you can tell when Wilbon bull****s because he CANNOT stop from laughing or smiling. And about Bob Ryan: He is one of the best talent evaluators in the history of basketball, period. The guy is right 99 out of 100 times, its ridiculous how smart this guy is.
Heh heh, you are right. That is soooo funny! You can tell when Wilbon is BSing, or rather, he himself doesn't believe what he says for the sake of the show. Some times Kornheiser does the same thing; a little smirk starts to creep out. Of course the show would be boring if they agreed all the time, or even most fo the time...
The guy that picked Bradley over Ming was a dallas sportswriter, but he said that he was converted that night. Also I think Kornheiser said something about he never really believed that Yao would be a bust. That show is great. What gets me though is that even after the spurs game some writers said that every dog has his day pretty much. WTF!?
Cowlishaw is a moron. I hated ATH at first because of him alone. Thats how much he sucks. And I don't know why Kellerman doesn't like Paige, he seems to be the best right behind Ryan on the show.
ATH has to be one of the worst shows on TV. the silly bickering between Paige and Kellerman is like an elementary school fliration where a little boy pulls a little girl's hair. It takes from the sports content of the show. Having said that, I still watch the show from time-to-time because I like the idea of 4 sports writers shooting the breeze about current day sports topics. The show could really do without Kellerman, his scoring system, and his ego (be it real or made-for-tv). Its too bad a real show, like "Sports Reporters", doesn't air on a daily basis before "PTI".
