State GOP says Michael Moore illegally offered underwear in exchange for voting

    October 5, 2004, 6:19 PM

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The Michigan Republican Party is asking four county prosecutors to file charges against filmmaker Michael Moore, charging that he illegally offered underwear, noodles and snacks to college students in exchange for their promise to vote.

"We want everyone to participate in this year's election, but not because they were bribed or coerced by the likes of Michael Moore," said Greg McNeilly, executive director of the state Republican Party.

The GOP said it asked prosecutors in Wayne, Ingham, Antrim and Isabella counties to charge Moore with violating Michigan's election law. The law prohibits a person from contracting with another for something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

Moore, a native of Flint, is touring the country and imploring "slackers" who usually don't vote to head to the polls this year, saying they could make the difference in the presidential race.

He made stops at Michigan State University, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Central Michigan University and Elk Rapids High School on the first leg of a 60-city pre-election tour.

During each program, habitual nonvoters are invited on stage to pledge to vote for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. First-time student voters are offered gag prizes such as clean underwear.

The GOP said Moore also offered students a clean dorm room, a year's supply of Tostitos and a package of Ramen noodles.

Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for the Wayne County prosecutor's office, refused to comment on the matter. Calls to Moore and the other county prosecutors weren't immediately returned Tuesday.

LOL! I'm shocked about this. Moore spoke at my university this past Sunday and I thought this was a really funny/cool thing that he did. I hope the republicans aren't serious about this and are just trying to mess with him a little bit.

here's a tip; don't talk about him the day his DVD gets released :)

Blockbuster is giving $8 for dvd trade ins right now. I traded 3 titles I didn't want for Saved! and thinking about trading 3 more for F 9/11.

Well, if you'd been following the story from the beginning you'd see its kinda that and kinda serious. He's been offering things for votes for a while now and he's been called on it. He told followers to offer sex for votes (which i know is a joke before you say anything). But the law clearly states that you can't offer anything or tell others to offer anything for votes. When he found out that he could be in trouble, he did this using ramen noodles and underwear that way anytime anyone accused him of anything, he could say OMG ITS JUST UNDERWEAR YOU GUYS OVERREACT TO EVERYTHING!!!

Don't ever let Moore fool you either, is it a coincidence that this is lining up with the release of his DVD? hmmm maybe not

So you can't offer somebody something if they promise to vote? I didn't know that but you learn something new everyday.

    Hmmm.

    Moore: not serious.

    Republicans: serious.

Bottom line: more slackers now know about Moore's campaign to get out their votes.

Moore is a man who stirs the pot.

He is a complainer and a whiner, he points fingers but rarely gives out answers.

Michael Moore is a big fat blob of nothingness.

Kind of like the press is supposed to do, eh?

The only person(s) required to give out answers are 1) the administration and 2) the administration running against them

He is a documentary film maker, not a member of the press.

Nothing to see here, move along.

The article seems to suggest he's awarding prizes for votes for Kerry with this sentence: "During each program, habitual nonvoters are invited on stage to pledge to vote for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry." That may or may not be separated on-stage (don't know) from the prize-giveaways, but it would nevertheless set the tone for the whole event, giveaways included.

I can see how he can argue that underwear or a pack of Ramen is a gag gift that is essentially of no value and therefore not compensation for a vote. It'd be much harder to argue that a year's supply of Tostitos or a cleaning service is without value. If he was really doing that, joke or not, it would be illegal as far as I can tell.

    Media is media, bub.

I didn't say he was a member of the press. I said he's doing what the press should be doing.

So the press should distort truth, selectively edit "documentaries" to make a political point, and outright endorse one candidate over another?
