I think this is reaching a little.

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat retired Michael Jordan's No. 23 jersey before his final game at the team's arena on Friday night.

The jersey -- half red for the Chicago Bulls and half blue for the Washington Wizards -- was hung from the rafters, and Miami coach Pat Riley said no Heat player will wear the number again.

"In honor of your greatness and for all you've done for the game of basketball -- and not just the NBA, but for all the fans around the world -- we want to honor you tonight and hang your jersey, No. 23, from the rafters,'' Riley said at midcourt. "No one will ever wear No. 23 for the Miami Heat. You're the best.''

Jordan then hugged Riley and waved to the crowd.

It was the first jersey the Heat have retired in their 15-year history.

Jordan averaged 30.2 points on 51.5 percent shooting in 37 regular-season games against the Heat during his career. He was even better in the playoffs, averaging 34.2 points in 11 games.

Before the ceremony, the Heat also played a highlight video of Jordan on the big screen. It was complete with high-flying, tongue-hanging dunks, ankle-breaking moves, shoulder shrugs, fist pumps and his trademark smile.

Even though I'm not a huge Jordan fan, I've been his biggest defender for many years.

But this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. What about Wilt, Magic, Larry, Kareem, and Bill?

    Can open... worms everywhere.

Maybe they were desperate to retire that first jersey?

Although I guess it is similiar to no one being allowed to wear 42 in baseball...

Michael Jordan is not Jackie. Good thing the Rox already retired the number.

I also dont really care for Jordan but i though that this was really cool. I also dont care much for Riley but his comments were very respectful. While you can argue about it all day, an overwhelming majority will agree that Jordan was the best player ever. Also, most will also agree that no player has done more to increase the populariy of the game.

The Rockets should be the first team to retire Stockton's number. Thanks for all the memories!

This IMO is a slap in the face to Alonzo Morning
He should have been the 1st heat to get his Number Retired
He was the heart and soul of that team for so long

He d*mn near killed himself for that ungrateful ass team

Well, since Zo is still on the payroll and believes that he can come back next year, IMO it would be a slap in the face to ZO if they retired his jersey. Besides, "so long" ain't that long...Zo and Grandmama were kick-ass Hornets too.

Most people who know anything about basketball before the 90's will say that Wilt was the best player ever. Bird and Magic probably did the most to increase the games popularity.

I like Michael and he deserves all the acolades he gets but this is ridiculous. I think it is a slap in the face to any future hall of famer player that plays for the Heat that will eventually have their jersey retired.

Anyone want to see a JORDAN jersey hang next to Olajuwon, Drexler, Rudy, Calvin etc? That's what I thought!

    Stupid!

I think it's pretty lame for a team to retire another player's number...it's different than having the NBA itself retire the number throughout the league. The Heat are just being extremely lame for doing this...

I'm a Jordan fan and supporter, and I think that this is just kind of ridiculous...

I think that you could easily make an argument that he shouldn't even have it retired it in Washington.

if MLB & NHL did it,.......its consistant with other sports, so its ok with me.

i agree that MJ did more to raise the level of basketball to more people and is worth of that honor.

just my opinion on the matter.

If it's a league wide thing to honor the greatest player ever, then it's okay. But Miami Heat (which Jordon has little to zero relationship to) doing this thing? It's simply ridiculous.

Also why now? Why not after his 1st retirement or 2nd retirement? What did Jordon do in his 2 years with Washington make him greater than ever before?

This time he actually has a farewell tour...the last two retirements came during the off season, this time, he let everyone know a year in advance, that it was his last season. People actually were able to prepare for stuff like that this year.

I think that all NBA teams should retire Jordan's number ala Jackie Robinson, BUT only together.

It is ridiculous that Miami retired Jordan's number on its own initiative.
