My opinion is if you compare Michael Jordan to a player who has never won an mvp or never was a major contributer to a championship or championships, you don't know anything about the nba. stop. you never saw michael jordan play or you don't understand what a truly dominating player does in the nba.
I agree for the most part, so I voted the first one, but some great players have not won a championship, because to win one of those, you have to have a TEAM, individuals cannot win champions. An example of this would be LeBron James, he is a fantastic player, and his stats are comparable to Jordan, but he has no rings. (BTW I think that will no longer be the case after his career is over.)
I don't agree at all. I could compare Jordan to Von Wafer. So what? If I say something that is incorrect, then call me out on it. But there's nothing wrong with just making a comparison.
No player is just like Jordan. Kobe isn't just like Jordan. LeBron isn't. No one is. I don't really see your point. People can say whatever they want. If I disagree with them and I care enough about it, I'll tell them and explain why I think they are wrong. Maybe you can give an example of what you're talking about.
Without a doubt. Tracy didn't have the heart of an Alpha male. He is gone now, tinman needs to let it go.
I think it's good to see that the media is not trying to force another Jordan on us. I remember when Kobe, VC,T-Mac, Harold Miner,(I'm not sure but was he really supposed to be the next Jordan),probably some others I am forgetting were all supposed to be the next Jordan. Kobe is the closest thing to him from that group. With the new class of LeBron, Melo, Durant, Wade the comparisons have stopped. Although I have heard a few people compare Wade to Jordan back after he won the Championship. So I think the media has stopped trying to force the issue of the next Jordan.
Personally, I think the MJ comparisons are ridiculous in his overall accomplishments, appeal beyond the game (what those players meant for that zeitgeist), and skill in any sense. Even with all the great players in the league right now, they cannot really compare the MJ. Many people will say Kobe or LeBron compare favorably, but yet, neither one really have a great number of advantages over him statistically and skill wise. 6 championships in 8 years (in a team that wasn't a premier franchises), looks better than both players at this point, but LeBron still has alot of time though. Bryant has played the same number of seasons that MJ has, he is inferior across the board. MJ is in that category with Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Wilt Chamberlain, the Great Bambino, Pele, Wayne Gretzky, and handful of other athletes who are in a class of their own. The untouchable class, in which no other players impacted the game in the way that some of those players did, especially ones who played in a similar time period. For example, Babe Ruth has several of his records broken and even surpassed, but for most baseball fans, historians, and even the general public . . . he is most commonly recognized as the greatest MLB player ever. He's simply done things in the sport that most of other players (especially in his same position) have failed to do. He became the first player to hit 20 HR, 30 HR, 40 HR, 50 HR, and 60 HR, while also almost winning 100 games as a pitcher. He's even the all time leading slugger. Lastly, he was the big reason for the explosion in popularity of baseball, which *coincidentally* happen at the same time Ruth played in the league.
According to your logic then Tinman, a player can be compared to Jordan if he forces the NBA to change their rules? That means Barkely can be compared to Jordan too since he the rules changed that you couldn't be back to the basket for no more than 5 seconds. You really need to chill on your T-Mac hate, cuz thats all I think this is.
Underlying meaning much? Its fine, all in fun. (we hope) Jordan is the gold standard of NBA Basketball. Thats pretty much consensus. But its not sacrilege nor taboo at all to compare another player to him. Saying other characters in the Bible are comparable or more important than Jesus Christ? Taboo, where are you going with that.. Comparing another player to Jordan? Subjective, not taboo. The issue can be OTHER comparisons. What about Moses Malone? Dr J? John Stockton? They've accomplished a lot in the NBA. Are we not allowed to compare less accomplished players to them? Is comparing Al Jefferson to Kevin Garnett not allowed?
What is this thread in response to? Did someone compare Durant to Jordan or something? It's a shame some people never got to see MJ in action regularly. It really was something to behold.
