MICHAEL CAIN IS ALFRED IN BATMAN!! Source: Variety Tuesday, November 25, 2003

Michael Caine (pictures) has agreed to play the role of Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred in the new installment of Warner Bros.' Batman series. Christian Bale has been cast in the title role.

The film, to be helmed by Christopher Nolan and being written by David Goyer, is expected to start shooting next year for a 2005 release.

Meanwhile, Caine is also expected to star in Castle Rock's sequel to the Sandra Bullock romantic comedy "Miss Congeniality."

Wow, Michael Caine is a damn good actor. I've also heard that Daniel Day Lewis is up for the maine villian, Ra's Al Ghul.

Man, that Michael Caine is in everything.

I watched my wedding video the other day, and I'll be damned if Michael Caine wasn't in it.

Yeah, he is getting a bit overexposed. I was just picturing Alfred with a cockney accent though. "Ullo master Bruce, ow goze da crookid bobbi case?"

Great they have a well-respected (and obviously hard working - the guy missed picking up his Oscar for Hannah and her Sisters because he was working on Jaws 4) actor to play Alfred and a good looking, talented young actor to play Batman. But it won't do the producers any good to have all this acting talent and another ****ty script.

I am not at all kidding when I say that Michael " I'll take it!" Caine is among the better fim actors in the world, and one of muy favorites.

He once said that he decided a long time ago, if he was going to be a w****, at least be a well paid one. That, I think, explains his, shall we say, questionable choice of films for someone so talented. That said, while he's on screen, he can make even the worst film ( Jaws 5, Blame It on Rio*, etc. ) watchable simply because he's so damned good.

    * Yes, I was a teen when I saw this too, and am aware that, from a certain POV, there were at least 2 other very appealing reasons for watching this movie.

Thinking about the actors they are going after has reminded me of a story that came out recently, that Orson Welles had wanted to make a Film Noir Batman movie and had come quite close, even having cast the important roles.

Here's a reported, actual production design done for the Welles Batman film.

I forgot to mention that the above stuff could quite possibly be a hoax. Especially since I haven't heard anything about it since the story first came out, may I can Snope it.

I think AICN eventually revealed this as a hoax. I can't remember, though.

I actually looked that up and found nothing, but I found a site where some guy gave some logical reasons as to why it couldn't be true. Some stuff involved the fact that some of the actors had contracts at different studios at the time. Also, the Riddler is supposed to be a bad guy in it, but he wasn't created until 1948, after this movie was supposedly in pre production.

For some reason, I get Michael Caine confused with Michael Keaton all the time. Who is playing Batman in this latest one?

Not to hijack this thread, but...

He may be somewhat inexperienced, but I have faith in Christopher Nolan and believe "he can right the ship." Heck, look what Bryan Singer did for X-Men. I just hope that the Warner Brothers "suits" don't muck up the works with their own idea, memos, and TPS reports.

EXEC #1: Our demographic analysis and market research indicate that this film needs monkeys. Make Alfred a monkey and have him wear a beanie. Kids go bonkers for monkeys.
    CHRIS NOLAN: ...
EXEC #2: Also, we just struck a deal this morning with Dr. Scholls Odor Eaters. We need to work the product into the movie prominently. I suggest we create an entirely new CGI villain for this movie whose trademark weapon is throwing medicated footpads at innocent bystanders.
    CHRIS NOLAN: ...
EXEC #1: Shouldn't those footpad weapons be laced with poison or something?
EXEC #2: I feel that having those footpads actually hurt or kill people would give Dr. Scholls a negative connotation, and that would adversely affect our business relationship.
EXEC #1: Good call! I guess that's why you're being fastracked to V.P.
    CHRIS NOLAN: ...
EXEC #2: Chris, one more thing. We want to replace the character "Robin" with a wise-cracking streetwise cop played by either Chris Tucker or Martin Lawrence. (Chris Rock and Will Smith want too much money). Also, if it's not too much trouble, we'd like to replace this "Batman" guy with Jackie Chan.
EXEC #1: Can Jackie have superhuman strength or at least a tuxedo that gives him superhuman strength?
EXEC #2: You, sir, are a genius.
    CHRIS NOLAN: I quit.

Hopefully, Nolan will pull through with minimal scrapes and bruises. I mean, I guess it could be worse, right? At least McG isn't directing this film.

Nolan directed Memento, correct? That was an incredible movie and I'm sure he'll do a great job on this one also

I think Sir Ian McKellen would have made a better Alfred.
