Citing several league sources, the Miami Herald is reporting that Ellis has left the Minnesota Timberwolves to join Miami, although a Heat spokesman said nothing is official. Last season, Ellis played a full season for just the second time in his nine-year career, averaging 9.4 points and 6.0 rebounds for Minnesota, which signed him to a one-year deal in October. Ellis, 31, played all 82 games for the first time since his rookie year of 1992-93. Since then, he has missed over 200 games due to a variety of injuries. One of the league's most personable players, Ellis became expendable when the Timberwolves signed Joe Smith, but he could challenge for the starting small forward job in Miami. He also can play power forward. Since Denver drafted him fifth overall out of Notre Dame in 1992, Ellis has averaged 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in 503 regular-season games. It doesn't really address their real problems though, as Chalotte killed them by quickness in the smaller 3 positions. Hardaway is too old now and Jones is just a fine role player.
