MARLINS' RELOCATION: San Antonio under 'serious consideration'
    BY BARRY JACKSON
    bjackson@MiamiHerald.com

San Antonio has become the focus of Marlins' relocation discussions, Major League Baseball president Bob DuPuy said Wednesday.

Asked if San Antonio has emerged as the front-runner, DuPuy said, ``I would not go that far. All I would say is that right now, that seems to be the temporal focus. I think it's too early to have a front-runner.''

The Marlins have spoken with officials with San Antonio, Portland and Norfolk, Va., but the talks with San Antonio have progressed further than the others.
Marlins president David Samson said the team and San Antonio officials are speaking three or four times a week.

However, San Antonio hasn't presented a stadium financing plan to the Marlins.

Mayor Phil Hardberger did not respond to a request for comment.

''Talks are serious, but until financial plans are discussed, it's preliminary,'' said Samson, who toured San Antonio on Dec. 6. Samson said the Marlins are ''very encouraged'' about how aggressively San Antonio is pursuing the Marlins and that the city is ''under very serious consideration.'' Samson always has said the Marlins prefer to remain in South Florida, but stadium talks remain stalled.

San Antonio was the first city the Marlins visited after receiving permission to explore relocation.

''I imagine there will be another visit there,'' Samson said.

The Marlins have not received permission to visit Las Vegas, because MLB is believed to have concerns about relocating to the gambling mecca. Asked if the Marlins would be given permission to visit Las Vegas, DuPuy told The Las Vegas Review Journal for today's editions, ``I have no information. Focus seems to be on San Antonio at this point.''

The Marlins' discussions about building a stadium in Hialeah have not progressed, Samson said. Even with a contribution by the team and Miami-Dade County, the Marlins need free land and an additional $100 million or so toward construction

Well, If Im not mistaken, San Antonio passed Dallas for second largest city in Texas, metro-wise.

If Austin doesnt become land-locked like Dallas, they could very well pass up SA....or even worse, form another Texas Metroplex with SA being so close by. Is this state big enough for two Metroplex's?

That's the thing, land wise, Austin is much smaller than San Antonio. I think Austin's plan is to grow up, not out though.

I wonder if they would still be a National League team.

why would they be an AL team?

You can't have 15 in the NL, 15 in the AL.

I'd shoot you one better....... keep the current name of the team. The San Antonio Missions, with a picture of the Alamo as the logo. I'd like to see the idiots that complained about 1836 complain about that.

I would LOVE for San Antonio to get the team. It would provide the Astros with a new rival, and give people in West and South Texas a new team to root for.

As far as UT goes, screw them! They can't fight the MLB and win.

    Time out, time out.
That whole San Antonio 1836ers is suppose to be a joke.

But isn't that San Antonio Missions team a Triple A team for Seattle?

they'd be the very definition of a small market team. in terms of media market size they're smaller than KC, Milwaukee, Cincy, and Pittsburgh...all of which support perennial losers in a game with no serious revenue sharing or salary cap.

yeah they can because no one in austin would make a major push for a pro sports team. the horns are views like a franchise in austin. there is no major sports team that would want to be in austin since there is so much competition with the horns and austin is not that big of a town.

    particularly not a baseball team

they need to find a way to stay in miami. even if they have to shoulder a bigger burden of the new stadium than they'd like to.

With the Expos move to DC, MLB has pretty much run out of feasible relocation options to threaten cities with (unless they have a change of heart re: Vegas).

Other than SBC, what're the corporate players in SA?

I remember rich lord was talking about san antonio wasn't a viable nfl town because of lack of size and corporate dollars. that guy is ignorant. san antonio has become one of the ten largest cities in america. its the home of sbc.

its a very viable pro town. I would love to seem them get an nfl team to clear out all the dallas fans in san antonio and austin.
