Miami has offered Elton Brand a max contract of $82 million. The Clips have 15 days to make a move. The Clips can now do one of two things match the offer out right or do a sign and trade. The Clips only offered $65 million on the first pass. The Heat offer may be too rich for the Clips. This may be the opportunity the Rockets were hoping for. They may be able to now slip in and offer Rice's expiring contract and Mobley to grab Brand. Whatever happens this is going to shake up the league. Look for some kind of large deal...possibly multiteam. Thats all for now.....
Here is the article...... Wednesday, July 16 Brand becomes third Clipper to get offer sheet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press Free agent Elton Brand signed an offer sheet with the Miami Heat on Wednesday, a move that will force the Los Angeles Clippers to match the deal or lose the rights to the former All-Star forward. One-Time Offers The Clippers are facing a full-court press to keep some of their stars. Denver is going to make it tough on Los Angeles to keep Andre Miller. The point guard signed a six-year, $51 million offer sheet -- with another $4.5 million available in bonuses -- with Denver on Wednesday. Denver will give Miller $14 million up front, including $10 million of which will be in the form of a signing bonus. The point guard will also receive 70 percent of his first year's salary by Oct. 15, ESPN's David Aldridge reported Wednesday. If the Clippers match Brand's offer sheet from the Heat, Miami will likely go after Lamar Odom, who is also a restricted free agent. Los Angeles has contacted Odom's agent in hopes of reaching a contract extension. -- ESPN.com news services The Clippers, who had previously offered Brand an extension worth more than $60 million, have 15 days to match the offer. "This organization has always been committed to winning," Heat coach Pat Riley said in a statement. "This offer sheet for Elton Brand is a continuance of that commitment to try to win and put the best possible players on the floor for our fans to enjoy." The Heat did not disclose terms of the deal, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported the offer could be as high as $82.2 million over six years. Brand, who has averaged 19.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in his four NBA seasons, would fill Miami's need for a true inside presence. The Heat were the NBA's second-lowest scoring team last season and ranked 18th in rebound differential. Brand spent his first two seasons with Chicago and the last two with the Clippers. He was an All-Star in 2002, the first Clipper to be selected for the game since Danny Manning in 1994. He averaged 18.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game last season, overcoming the first two serious injuries of his career -- right knee surgery in September, then a stress fracture in his leg that caused him to miss 18 games in February and March. Brand returned for the final nine games of the Clippers' season, averaging 19.0 points and 12.2 rebounds during that stretch, fully recovered from the leg problem.
I kinda hope the clippers don't match just so there will be one less Brand for whoever on the rockets hope and dream threads
Sterling, cheap b*stard that he is, will probably match this. You get Brand on yhe cheap (comparatively) then let everyone else go. I think Miami really wants Odom and are forcing l.a.'s hand. You know Sterling only signs one of these guys, if any. Then Riley takes his newfound cap space and signs the guy he has wanted for years.
Duece, Sorry about that. I looked for another post...didn't see yours. I didn't see a mention of the sign and trade though
Are you saying the Rockets are pursuing this or it's just a possibility? If we got Elton brand, that would be awesome.
Maybe a cap expert can help here, but I'm guessing a sign-and trade isn't possible. I'm guessing it's a binding contract with the Heat that the Clippers have the right to match. If they match it, they got Brand and couldn't trade him for a while. If they don't match, the Heat get him. Sign and trade deals are special contracts - it's in the contract that the player must be dealt in the next 2 days. It's an invalid contract if they don't trade him. Since the Heat are the ones that have Brand to the offer sheet, I doubt this is in there. Meaning I'm guessing he is either a Heat or Clipper player - no other option. But I'm not the expert on this - I'd rather aelliott confirm
Brand hasn't signed the offer sheet yet. So technically, I think it is still possible for the Clippers to deal him in a sign and trade to any team. If Brand were to sign the offer sheet, then it is either the Clip joint or the Heat.
All the articles i have read on the deal, seem to be big on this fact he will either be in either Miami or PaperClip land, suspect the front loading of the contract would prevent a sign n trade.
MIAMI (AP) -- Free agent Elton Brand signed an offer sheet with the Miami Heat on Wednesday, a move that will force the Los Angeles Clippers to match the deal or lose the rights to the former All-Star forward. Even if the contract technically cannot be traded, any other teams excepting Miami and L.A. are forbidden from contacting Brand for the duration of the 15 day period. Meaning if he accepts (which I thought I read he did in the other thread), he will be either a Clipper or Heat.
The offer sheet has been signed. At this point, either the Clippers match it, or they don't match it. It can be rescinded in only one case: if Brand, Miami, AND the Clippers all agree to that. That appears very unlikely. Note that if it did, for some unforseen and crazy reason, happen, it could not be for the purpose of working out a sign and trade or other sort of deal between the two teams. Clarifying Clutch's statement on S&Ts - it is one single transaction between the two teams; in effect, the player being signed & traded's contract is with the new team, not the old one. The trade must be completed within two days or else the contract is void, as Clutch said. That not withstanding, no team can "swoop" in and offer something for Brand, as suggested by the first post - he's either going to Miami or staying in LA. Such a transaction to grab Brand is not allowed...not to mention that it wouldn't be likely to happen anyway.
brand is over. He's already signed an offer sheet with the Heat. SO NO BRAND FOR US. i guess that leaves ODOM or B. Grant...
This sucks. Why does every other team seem to improve while we are standing pat and not doing anything?
Can Brand sign the matched offer with the Clippers while two weeks later the Rockets or some other team offer a deal (i.e. Mobely and Rice) to the Clips for him? If not, why?
I'm as far as it gets from being an expert on this, but I think that if a player is not in a sign-and-trade, one cannot trade him for a certain period (several months) after he signed a new contract. aelliott or NIKEStrad can tell you all the details, I'm sure...
It pretty much means forget about Brand becoming a Rocket for the next 6 years (not that there was ever much of a chance). LA has 2 choices: A.) Match the offer sheet. B.) Not match the offer sheet. They can not turn around and sign and trade Brand to another team. They can't even work a deal with Miami for a sign and trade. It's that cut and dry. Brand will either be a Clipper or a Heat. Cut. Dry. Further, if LA chooses to match the offer sheet, Brand will have the ability to block any trades for the next year. Even more, most reports have the Heat making the offer sheet as "un-Sterling friendly" as possible. Most of the money up front, huge signing bonus, and of course a trade kicker. The trade kicker makes it even harder that even if the Clips wait out the year (in which they have to fork over 20 mill to Brand in bonuses anyway), he will be difficult to trade without taking on even more salary.
