I hope the Jersey Shore cast host a huge party and they blow it up with them still inside.

Tood bad, it is a nice building from the exterior and fits nicely with the look and feel of the City Center.

agreed.. i was just in vegas about a month ago. It's not like its some small building in the back. It's right on the strip and its the main/first building you see of City Center when driving from the Bellagio (going south) side.

Blowing it up just seems like a huge waste and that there should be better plans to salvage it.

building on the far right. It would definitely look like something is missing and not right about city center if they blew it up

Perini has a horrible, horrible history of screwing up construction projects and trying to weasel out of responsibility. For instance IIRC they are the main contractor that was involved in all the legal disputes with respect to the Big Dig in Boston, and they spent years trying to avoid responsibility there, and that was one of four or five open legal cases that they were fighting or had recently lost at the time.

Frankly, I think it was borderline negligent to hire them as primary contractor. Based on their history, I don't doubt they screwed up and don't want to accept responsibility.

a bit more detail on the issue
    http://www.vegasinc.com/news/2011/aug/15/mgm-county-demolish-harmon/

Looks like there is a huge court battle over unpaid bills.. MGM obviously not wanting to pay Perini for a defective building and Perini claiming they can salvage the building and blaming MGM just wanting to get out from paying their bills and destroying the evidence. Looks like it might be awhile ..

^^ agree with a lot of legal maneuvering to do still.

On a smaller scale, if I hired someone to say, run duct work in my attic to properly cool a new bathroom I added, and there was no formal contract, and the contractor hired did the work but did it wrong and it was ineffective, would I be required to pay them for the work performed if they offered to come fix it? This is just a made up example btw, just trying to think it through on a small scale - I'd assume it was contractual in the case of the Harmon.

On a small scale, you would think it would be logical to not have to let the contractor come in and fix his work or pay him. Why would I want a contractor who wasn't very good to come in and fix something he clearly couldn't do right in the first place?

    This.

The legal liabilities that could arise from structural flaws would be a nightmare among other things. Sometimes you only have 1 chance to get the job done right and it doesn't help when said contracting company has a history of making mistakes.

    Safety first.

I'm surprised to see the huge losses. Cosmo, Aria, and Vdara are great hotels.

I can't see myself staying anywhere but these hotels or Encore for quite some time.

yea i agree.. it's a great area and it looks good from the strip. It's going to suck though since city center isnt completely complete without the Harmon. It was designed by a very prestigious team of architects and the whole thing was designed as one unit. It will be missing a key pillar to the city center skyline with the Harmon destroyed. It looks like they already had to scale it down from 49 stories to 27 stories because of the huge construction error.
I wonder who built the rest of the City Center. Was it all the same construction company?

I'm sure they will rebuild something since the Harmon is sitting on key real estate but anything is going to take several years.
The court battle will take at least another year.. Another 2 years to plan for demolishing and cleaning up.. Then if they decide to rebuild it will take several years for the permits, design, funding, etc etc.. And then the actual construction. The city center may not be complete for another decade.

I doubt anyone here knows enough about it to say who is right. If you do know, you're probably testifying about it.

I'm no expert on Vegas, architecture or anything like that, but it seems that the "city within a city" concept never seems to work no matter where they are trying to pull it off. For that matter, all grandiose plans set for the Vegas strip in recent memory seem to get either scrapped completely or scaled back before opening. I know there has been financial troubles in most of the giant casino chains in Vegas, but their batting average seems incredibly low.
