Metallica strikes new Net chord When it comes to Net music downloaders, hard-rock band Metallica has mellowed out. The longtime opponents of Internet piracy, who sued file-swapping network Napster in federal court, are promoting downloads of their songs via Metallicavault.com, a Web site set to launch Thursday. But the site will be free only to people who buy the band's upcoming album, "St. Anger," scheduled for release the same day. The CD inset will include a unique code that people can use to access the site's video of live performances and download newly released tracks. "We've always wanted our fans to experience our music online," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. "But up until now, the existing distribution methods have not passed the kind of 'quality' standards our fans have come to expect from us." click link above for complete story... another link ---------- WHATEVER hippocrites
Gee, I wonder how long it will take somebody to make up some fake codes and have them out all over the net...
Damn, I guess I'll just have to stick to Kaaza... Sounds like they are trying to force people to buy their new album. Aren't they confident enough in it to assume that people will anyway? I guess not.
"We've always wanted our fans to experience our music online," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in a statement. "But up until now, the existing distribution methods have not passed the kind of 'quality' standards our fans have come to expect from us." Translates to "We took so much heat from our fans from fighting Napster that ..." Methinks Lars is also confused about the quality that fans expect (quality of the recording versus the quality of the songs).
Metallica is: Kill 'Em All Ride The Lightning Master of Puppets And Justice For All Long live the good old days.....
I just heard another new cut from the album called Some Kind of Monster and while it has a hard edge reminicent of their first couple of albums, it is far from what they once were. These guys just do not have it in them anymore to produce good songs. Believe it or not, I think Load and Reload are better than this album.
these guys need to make a quick exit. The fire is gone. Collect your checks and start up a label or something. "St. Anger" is not going to make anyone wanna download...
I just heard that song driving home from work too. It sounded tired and redundant. Nothing that original......
How in the hell is this forcing anything? It's a perk of buying the album. There is no forcing involved. Personally, it seems like a waste to me. As others have said, Kazaa is still around, I see no reason to even bother with making this network. I do, however, find it interesting that Metallica decided to release their album 5 days early (tomorrow rather than the 10th) because of all the early file sharing of their music. Hell, I'm happy Kazaa is around if it means I get to buy the album 5 days early.
Anyone remember this cartoon? Metallica is partially responsible for the rise of Kazaa and Morpheus and the subsequent ruling in favor of file-swapping. Suck on it, Lars. Not only are we NOT gonna buy your album, we're not gonna download it for free on Kazaa, either. Boo-yah, hypocrite!
Before that napster debacle, Metallica was one of my favourite bands. 'Unforgiven II' and 'Until it sleeps' are great songs.
You have to buy the album to gain access to this wonderful website. I jumped on the bandwagon after And Justice For All and I'm disgusted with their latest material. I can only imagine how their hardcore fans from day one feel about them now.
You have to buy the album to gain access to the file sharing network where you can download the songs from the album. How is this forcing anything? They are not taking away any priviledges. They are providing a perk (however useless that perk may be) if you buy the album. Hate on Metallica's album all you want, but them creating this file sharing network for their fans is anything but forcing anything on people. It's more of a poorly thought out method of enticing people to buy their albums.
