    Some new MGS4 stuff today.

First, the theatrical trailer, featuring the movie trailer voice guy and plenty of cheese:
    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="500" height="319" id="gamevideos6" align="middle"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="play" value="true"><param name="loop" value="true"><param name="scale" value="showall"><param name="wmode" value="window"><param name="devicefont" value="false"><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"><param name="menu" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="salign" value=""><param name="movie" value="http://www.gamevideos.com/swf/gamevideos11.swf?embedded=1&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&src=http://www.gamevideos.com/video/videoListXML%3Fid%3D18828%26ordinal%3D1210720962078%26adPlay%3Dfalse" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <embed src="http://www.gamevideos.com/swf/gamevideos11.swf?embedded=1&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&src=http://www.gamevideos.com/video/videoListXML%3Fid%3D18828%26ordinal%3D1210720962078%26adPlay%3Dfalse" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" play="true" loop="true" scale="showall" wmode="window" devicefont="false" id="gamevideos6" bgcolor="#000000" name="gamevideos6" menu="true" allowscriptaccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" width="500" height="319" /></object>

How the game starts off (~15 minutes), don't think the "secret" intro is part of it though:

Kind of old, but a semi-recent video:
    <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UPgRXIKU3IQ&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UPgRXIKU3IQ&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Regarding spoilers, the theatrical trailer contains mostly new scenes. It doesn't seem to be too bad about spoilers IMO, but keep that in mind. The intro contains mostly stuff that has been shown in other videos.

The first MGS4 review was released by OPM UK. I haven't had a chance to read it, but I can post scans if people want to check it out.

You read my mind. I was thinking about starting up a post about this game within the next few days. What do you think about this game, RC? From everything I have read, it sounds like it is going to be EPIC. Possibly a contender for one of the top videogames in history.

I haven't played MGS3: Snake Eater yet, so I'm debating on whether or not I want to replay the first two, then play Snake Eater before I delve into MGS4. This one is supposed to be the last one in the series and tie up the entire storyline. Hence my thoughts on playing through the whole series again.

Have you seen this 15 min gameplay video yet? It looks AWESOME.

Uh oh... I was completely bored after 2 minutes -- statue camo/ stand perfectly still and watch people walk around you -- trouble.

Btw ~ MGS3 was the first MGS game I didn't finish or really ever get into -- completely dull.

It's certainly not the type of game that everyone will be into. It has always been billed as "Tactical Espionage Action". Definitely unique and different from most action/shooter games.

Ok, someone break it down for me....what's so special about this game? I'm gonna get that PS3 bundle in June and this game comes with it.

Is it a fighting game? I watched the preview and I saw more talking and stuff than action.

lol, get used to it if you end up getting the game. the series has always been about long drawn-out cutscenes

the gameplay does look boring. when snake is crawling on the ground it just looks like he's humping the floor. as someone who loved the original metal gear solid on playstation, the series just hasn't lived up to the hype. the cutscenes look incredible as always, but if they had spent as much time making the actual gameplay as cinematic and fluid as the cutscenes then this game might really be amazing.

    I can't wait for this game. I don't own a PS3, but I'll find a way to play.

For the dude that said he thought MSG3 was dull... what?!

That game was fantastic. Perhaps the best of the whole series.

Almost made me cry it did.

Did you buy MGS3 or MGS3:Subsistence? The camera on the original release of the game I thought was pretty bad. Subsistence was a much better game imo.

Holy crap...I just watched the gameplay intro ("How the game starts off") that RC posted in the first post...Brilliant! It really sets the tone and gives you the feel that the game is gonna be epic. It's basically just the opening credits dispersed through the opening cinema with a very small amount of gameplay to get you used to the controls.

I have a feeling this is gonna be the type of game where you wet yourself a little bit each time you hear the "moos" of the Gekkos before they descend upon you (those 1/2 mechanical, 1/2 biological bipedal Metal Gears).

lol some ppl just arent going like MGS, i love love love it, some ppl like the run and gun game, i do too but MGS is just MGS. Its the adventure/stealth game, really fun. the story mode kicks total ass. btw you dont really have to beat mgs3 to know whats going on in mgs4, as it was years ahead of mgs1.

    mgs3,mgs1,mgs2.

    Pretty much agree.

Agree with this too. I liked MGS2 a bit better, but MGS3 was great as well.

I certainly won't be able to listen to cicadas the same way anymore. :(

Hmm...I don't know. It is probably less important than MGS1 and MGS2 since MGS4 takes place shortly after those games, but I think MGS3 could still be pretty relevant in MGS4 despite the gap in time. There are definitely some things explained in MGS3 (and not MGS1 or MGS2) that are a somewhat major part of MGS4. Then, of course, you have
    Eva
being in the game, so there might be some references to what happened directly after MGS3 but before MGS1 (wow, the spoiler tag screwed up the formatting for this sentence). I expect MGS4 to tackle many of the questions brought up in the 3 games, so I think there could be plenty of references to MGS3. As I mentioned previously, the game is supposed to have flashbacks to previous games, so maybe that will make it easier for anyone that does play MGS3. Probably still better to play the game though.

And as for MGS in general, it seem like people either love it or hate. The "MGS experience" involves stealth-based gameplay and a ton of cinematics. It is not for everyone, but I think for people who enjoy those type of games, the franchise is really something special. I would note that it seems like MGS4 might be a bit more action-oriented. With the huge battles going on and wide-open areas, not sure how much sneaking around you can do unlike previous MGS games. You probably still can't run-and-gun like you could in other games, but it seems like the game is more "forgiving" to that play style than in previous games.

From what I have heard, they are going to give you a lot more latitude on how you want to approach moving through the game. You can be stealthy, or you can be more reckless and engage in consistent firefights. However, even with that being said, I think people who play this thinking it is a CoD4 action type of game might be disappointed.

yeah, that's the problem...it's cool if what you say is true, but you *know* they will still have a crapload of cutscenes. that's a big reason a lot of people don't like the franchise

why don't they make the game more like CoD4 or Halo 3, which sold way more per game, than any individual MGS game. from what I recall, the MGS games only sell like 2-4 million per

They sell a bit better than that. I think the worst-selling MGS was MGS3, and that sold about 4M, and that was just for Snake Eater IIRC. The first two games sold 6M+ each I believe. Seems to sort of depend on the hype and what games are also coming out (MGS3 coming out alongside GTA:SA and Halo 2 didn't help its sales).

It is about a notch or two below the best-selling games (GTA, Halo, GT, etc.), but it seems like they're doing enough things right to get pretty good sales. I don't think they want to change things up too much, especially since they'd probably alienate the ~5M MGS fans. Of course, they are making a lot of changes to the gameplay that make it bit more like Western games, but it is still MGS in the end.

Of course, if MGS4 is indeed the last MGS game by Kojima, there might be some drastic changes for future MGS games by Konami (you know they'll continue milking the franchise) since it could be by another director/team.

edit: Of course, I forgot that the Japanese market has been a bit different in the last 5 years or so. That might not help MGS out very much, although hopefully it should still do 1M copies or so.

I personally like the cut scenes.

That's what makes this series so unique. It's like a movie... that you get to play.

    It's great, IMO.

but that 6M is total worldwide right? not in the U.S. alone?

I'm not looking at any links or anything, this is just totally off the top of my head...I thought the MGSes were more like 2-4M each in the U.S., while CoD4 and Halo 3 have done like 8-10M here

I could very well be remembering wrong, lol. my point is still that Kojima should make it more like CoD and Halo and therefore sell more games =P

Those figures for CoD4 and Halo are worldwide numbers IIRC, although they're pretty similar to US numbers (those franchises do well in the US and parts of Europe, but horribly elsewhere). MGS may only sell 1.5M-2M copies in the US, but those will be probably be matched by sales in Europe and Japan.

And like I said, making it too much like CoD or Halo might decrease sales (or at the very least, hurt the game's sales in parts of Europe and Japan).

Probably because Hideo Kojima's highest priority isn't sales figures. That's just a guess, but he seems like the type of guy who has a vision for what the game will be like and a story to tell and he doesn't care much about watering that down to appeal to the masses.

Since I haven't played MGS3 yet, can someone tell me if there are a lot of cutscenes in that game? How much compared to MGS2?
