I was planning on getting both, but if this is true I'll wait a few years on the PS3...

Wow. Unless Sony is willing to take a HUGE hit on the books, packing the PS3 with so much cool hardware may backfire. Sony isn't in the best financial shape lately...

If this is true, that would put it at something like five to eight hundred bucks a piece. What's the point of getting a ps3 when a good gamin computer is just a tad bit more than that?

So they are saying $600-$800 for a PS3? Yeah I will wait a little while too.

To be fair, I believe the article is saying that MS may undercut the PS3 launch with a price-cut of the 360, making the year old system half the price of the new PS3.

Sony would be extremely stupid to come out with a 800 dollar vg console. Though I do remember a sony exec saying the system wont be cheap and you'll have to work for it, or something to that effect.

I haven't really been following the new system stuff, and likely wont think about getting one til next year at the earliest, but everything seems to be going Microsoft's way so far.

Xbox started churning out the games at the end of the system's cycle, and their launch games are pretty impressive(launch titles usually suck). So they should have the games. They should have the price advantage. I doubt the PS3 will have a huge hardware advantage.

I might just be switching brands whenever I get my next system. Just have to see what games the 360 churns out in its head start. I know there are some old xbox games that I want to play.

If Blu-ray is going to be the next gen-DVD, I'll probably go with PS3 despite the higher cost. I'm not far from grabbing an HD, and I'd rather grab a console that can act as a HD-DVD player as well.

    I'm assuming PS3 will open with a $600 price.

I don't really have time at the moment to go into a full breakdown, but I wouldn't think much of the article. Basically, it sounds like they're comparing what it will cost Sony/MS to make the systems, not what they'll price it at. Like CriscoKidd said, I'm guessing the "could cost 2x more" comment would be comparing the Xbox 360 costs in Spring of 2006 to the PS3 (guess $250-$300 to ~$500). Personally, I think their breakdown of the parts is flawed anyway, which I'll get into later if I have the time.

The bottom line is that I still don't see any reason not to assume a $300-$400...maybe even as high as $450 price tag for NA. But not $600-$800 or whatever ($299 with a HD is WAY more likely than that, IMO). Remember, following Sony's past strategies, that would probably mean a manufacturing cost close to $1000 just to build the thing for Sony. Yeah....that's going to happen.

There is no way a PS3 would cost 2x as much as an X-Box.

    $400.00 max.

duh, the nintendo/ipod system works better (Sony used to do this too) cheap systems, and make it back on the games and memory cards and other junk, like the power glove.

Well, okay - maybe 2x is pushing it but Sony has some serious long-term issues to deal with here.

    >Their financial status is not the best right now & having a big financial like ML throw out a report like this is not good. Sony is not Microsoft. They don't have the cash reserves to wage a $loss-hardware war like Microsoft did when it introduced the Xbox.

    >They will have to take a huge loss on each PS3 to price them at $3-400 - even if Merril Lynch's estimates on component costs are a bit high.

    >They are coming in maybe a year after the 360 with another super-expensive system. Yes it will be more "advanced" as far as processing power & also have Blu-Ray (see below) & Bluetooth (not that big a deal), but how many people will pay another 400+ dollars, after one year, for another system that doesnt do that much more than the 360? It better have some KILLER games...

    >Still nothing for Sony that comes close to equaling the incredible Xbox Live.

    >There is no guarantee that Blu-Ray will become the unified standard. None.
And even if it does, how many people will buy the PS3 for that alone? Most people would probably do what they do now - buy a standalone DVD player with the SS equipment in one package. I don't see Blu-Ray as being any more of an advantage than the 360 acting like a Windows Media Center Extender.

As long as they have exclusive rights for Madden and GTA, they could sell that badboy for as much as they want...

Even if that's the case - the point is that Sony will be taking a hit on each console - possibly a big one.

They'll be in the position that Microsoft was in when it introduced the Xbox, except without their massive cash reserves.

If the Revolution comes in way cheaper than either of the other two systems & it has all the old school Nintendo-world games everyone loves, it could be the second console everyone springs for immediately, not the PS3.

I want all three of them. I'm a serious gamer & I've had pretty much every console you can think of all the way back to the Odyssey & the 2600. I'll be hard-pressed to blow another $400 bucks on a console that doesn't do much more than the 360 & is missing something like Live, UNLESS it has a ton of games that just floor me...

Me and my new 50'' HDTV says I care about Blu-Ray and I'm sure others who have bought HDTV's care far more than having WMCE. Stand alone Blu-Ray players are going to cost around $500 anyways. And as far as Sony not being Microsoft..thats just not true. Sony is every bit as big as Microsoft and I highly doubt I'm going to see Sony go out of business anytime soon. I'm holding out for a PS3 becuase I think its going to be a better system and can offer me more as a whole for entertainment package.
