So one of the worst teams in the league record wise, the laughing stock of the league in front office operations, is also one of the most profitable teams in the league. Michael Heisley is just so proud of himself and how clever he is, cutting unnecessary expenses like scouts and happy to make any trade that improves his bottom line. He's even passing out his special business advice to other owners. Guess what Heisley, Donald Sterling figured this stuff out 20 years ago, but he's smart enough to keep his mouth shut.

Why does this guy even own an NBA team, if you're going to operate like this why don't you just take your money and put it in traditional investments like normal rich people. I guarantee he'd more make money that way than operating an NBA team.

I'm sure the NBA rewards based on ranking right?

If not it should. There must be a way to penalize you for performing poorly all the time (with waivers given to those who lose due to unforseen circumstances).

Considering this, I'm surprised they didn't choose Ricky Rubio, who would have been a sure-fire money-maker. I suppose they figured Thabeet would have been a would improve the team's win-loss record without breaking the bank, but Rubio would have improved them too

Heisley feels an need to justify why Memphis waiters spit in his food.

    A business genius?

OK, he bought the Grizzlies while heavily in debt. I've been saying that on this board since 2001. He then way overspent in a smallish town on payroll, to say nothing of paying big bucks to West/Daly/Versace. He spent a ton of money on his last good team (2005-06), but lost a ton on it.

Since then, he's worked toward the minimum payroll. While barely breaking even. And certainly not making enough to cover the 2001-06 run.

    Unconvinced, to say the least.

The thread title was meant to be sarcastic.

business wise he's probably doing OK.

He bought the team for $160m. Sold 30% for a bundle. Almost sold the balance for $250m in 2006. And I expect there's a big FOR SALE sign on the team for anyone willing to consider it with cash in their pockets. I'm sure the $350m selling price of the Sonics and their quick relocation warmed his heart.

He briefly lost his senses in 05/06, but quickly realized he prefers the Sterling style of basketball.
