I'm looking at getting a memory foam mattress topper, mainly to help with neck and back pain while sleeping... but I find it hard to find good information on these that isn't motivated by promotion. It seems pretty clear that Tempur-pedic is the best but they're also priced 3-10 times as much as varying brands of other toppers. I've got a friend who bought a memory foam mattress at BedInABox.com and he swears by it, but they don't sell toppers. The problem is I can't seem to find good information on best quality after Tempur-pedic. Even Consumer Reports was little help. Currently looking at this one because it's 3" thick and 5-pound density, but know nothing of the brand: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Sensus-Memory-Foam-3-inch-Mattress-Topper/3657735/product.html Anyone have any experience with these?
Here is a mattress blog i went to when i was lookin to buy a mattress: http://blog.pennlive.com/mattress/ It has blogs bout everything mattress related. Seems like a 2" latex is highly recommended as far as topper.
I made the mistake of buying a mattress with the model name "granite". It was damn near impossible to sleep on it until I bought a mattress topper at walmart. I was too cheap to buy anything that was name brand and was worried about getting ripped off. I actually really like the one we have and it wasn't very expensive.
I got mine from Costco with a 30 dollar off coupon. $110 for a queen size, not bad. It is a little soft for my taste, though.
If you can, spend the extra money to get the Tempur-pedic, keeping in mind that you tend to spend 8 hours a day on it. I suspect it will also come with a really good warranty. We have a Tempur-pedic mattress and it has been worth every penny.
My parents bought a memory foam mattress topper from Costco and swear by it. I myself have bought a memory foam mattress from Costco and love it. Both were made by Novaform. I've slept on both Novaform and Tempurpedic mattresses. In my experience, Tempurpedic is a bit firmer, perhaps higher quality, but the premium is much too high for now.
I bought my topper from these guys: http://www.sleepwarehouse.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=2 They have a few different brands. I got the Aerus 3" topper. But honestly after looking at the one you mentioned at Overstock, it seems like the same thing, but at a better price. I dont know if the brands really have much of a different product. Good Luck.
My friend sells the stuff at www.angelbeds.com or www.sleepbetterstore.com The warehouse is located in sugarland....everyone who buys his stuff loves it http://www.angelbeds.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=46 If you are seriously interested I am sure if you mention my name I can get you some kind of discount. shoot me an email if want me to pass along your info. Thanks.
A warning: they can get really hot. I had one and it was comfy as hell, but I'd wake up sweaty if I covered myself with anything heavier than a sheet.
(I know nothing about mattresses)... BUT if you do buy that one you are looking at through overstock.com, make sure you use Microsoft Bing Cashback. It will net you 20% back right now.
I actually just bought a Tempurpedic (the Rhapsody) and while it is a ton of money to part with, it's already been a good decision. It's so unbelievably comfortable, I've found myself trying to find something to do to keep me from going to bed. They've made some upgrades to the beds to make them breathe a little better so it doesn't get so warm. Everything I'd heard about Tempurpedic is looking like it's true.
Clutch, Have you thought about a latex topper? For more information, go to http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/
Try a pillow instead? I've been using a generic high density mf pillow for about year now. My problem was waking up with a sore neck. I don't get that anymore. I think it's mostly because they're quite heavy, it helps a person stop moving/twisting about so much in their sleep, that they have less of a chance to hurt themselves.
That is a great site. The guy is very knowledgeable. Also, compare the prices on that site vs in a store. It's a huge difference. I was able to get like $700 off the list price of a mattress knowing what the true price should be.
Sorry it's a month later, but wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave good advice here ... some real helpful websites and insight. I liked what I read about the latex mattress toppers, but I ultimately bought the 3" memory foam mattress topper from overstock because we figured if it didn't work for us we could put it on our guest bed. I've been waiting to publically praise it since I wanted to try it out for a longer time, but I have to say I love it so far. First few days I wasn't 100% sure, but I haven't had an uncomfortable night of sleep since (about 2-3 weeks) and no back/shoulder pains. Definitely would recommend.
Dang it...sorry I missed this thread...... We did the same thing the 3" worked for a couple of months then stopped working so well, so we went ahead and got the 6" one....the 6" has been great so far....going on about a year. The only downside is trying to get that first sheet on.....got to STREEEEETCCCHHHH it to make it work. DD
We have the 8lb density, 3 inch topper from sleep warehouse. After 18 months, its still awesome. Maybe not quite as firm, but pretty close.
