DENVER -- Carmelo Anthony was cited for mar1juana possession while boarding the team plane last week, though the Denver Nuggets star says the bag was left in his backpack by a friend.

Anthony, 20, was issued a summons last Friday at Denver International Airport while the Nuggets were waiting to board a flight to Milwaukee for a preseason game. Anthony's attorney, Daniel Recht, said he wasn't aware the mar1juana was there and that it was left there by an out-of-town friend who borrowed the backpack last week.

"The friend obviously uses mar1juana and left a small amount in the backpack when he returned it to Carmelo," Recht said Thursday. "Carmelo had no idea there was any mar1juana in the backpack."

Anthony was charged with possessing less than 1 ounce of mar1juana, a petty offense with a maximum $100 fine and no jail time. He was in Los Angeles for a preseason game against the Clippers and not immediately available for comment.

Recht said he has met with a city attorney and requested the citation be dismissed. He also said the friend acknowledged the mar1juana was his and would come forward to accept responsibility as early as Thursday.

Recht also said he received a letter from Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe verifying Anthony passed four random drug tests last season and another just two weeks ago. The letter also said tests from U.S. Olympic Committee at the Athens Games this summer came back negative.

"He was devastated to learn there was mar1juana left in the backpack," Recht said.

The charismatic Anthony led Syracuse to an NCAA title as a freshman in 2003, then was the third overall pick in the draft. He helped the Nuggets to one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history, from the league's worst record at 17-65 to reaching the playoffs last year for the first time since 1995.

There also have been some growing pains.

Anthony refused to go back into a game last season after his teammates complained about his shot selection and he was relegated to the bench at the Athens Games after U.S. coach Larry Brown called him a selfish player.

Anthony also was involved in a scuffle at a New York bar after someone reportedly spit on his girlfriend, MTV host La La Vasquez. He said the incident was blown out of proportion.

Anyone here ever see that Punkd show where they put this teenage girl in Carmelo's room and she claimed that was underage and at his party?

I didn't have an opinion on Carmelo one way or the other until I saw that episode. Long story, short: he really showed what an a**hole he is. In one part, the "manager" asked him to pull up his pants and he went after the guy (that's about half Carmelo's size) like he wanted to beat him up.

Yeah. Lotta courage to beat up someone that's twice your age and half your size. Same kinda courage Carmelo showed at the Olympics.

come on, you guys honestly think Melo would try and take a chance with some mar1juana on his backpack. I doubt it. And the amount he had is nothing, i mean, c'mon - it makes you feel soooo good.

I'm surprised he allowed that episode to air...His rep really took a hit and will hurt him long-term in terms of endorsements.

Obviously getting caught with weed doesn't help either.

I don't think he intentionally kept the stuff in his backpack, probably just forgot to take out the leftovers of what he was smoking before the flight. Makes sense considering the small amount.

However, the "my friend borrowed it and left it there" excuse is beyond lame.

In order to be a member of any high profile person's posse, the first requirement is you take the blame for any and all drug busts. You want the leftover hoochies, the overpriced drinks, and the guest bedroom then you take the blame for the MJ. That's the way it's been since time began, and that's the way it'll remain.

Melo's done a lot of other things that showed he's not quite up to the hype, but this one's kind of unimportant. Pot's fairly low on the list of things that will hurt your NBA career and chances of winning.

Colorado is having a great year. Two more months to make it a trifecta, Kmart's presence might help them out.

    LOL!

although i do believe him when he says he didn't know it was in there because you'd have to be pretty stupid to try and sneak it onto a plane just to see if you get busted. however, it damn sure doesn't belong to his "friend."
