Meet the new boss: Yao Ming, and he's good at it
This isn't the first and it won't be the last time I tell you this, but watch Yao Ming this season.
This is going to be the year you see him come into his own in ways that some never thought he would.
Yao will be the Rockets' leader this season, and I'm not talking in points and rebounds. Look for him to be the guy that sets the tone for the team's professionalism. Look for him to be the team spokesman.
Many assumed that certain things aren't in Yao's personality, not taking into account that some of that might have been lost in translation.
No, he didn't come in telling teammates what to do, because he didn't speak the language. I'm telling you: From watching him with his Chinese teammates, I saw a different Yao, and I'm starting to see that Yao with the Rockets.
Keep watching, you will soon see it too.

Yao dropped 30 and 13 on the Mavs in 40 minutes. That's a high number of minutes in the second game of a back-to-back for a guy the teams wants to rest a bit more, but that is how it is in games. When you're trying to win, you don't often take playing time into consideration.
The guy loves to play and he is a competitor. We'll see if Rick Adelman is able to keep Yao from overdoing it.

After only 10 points against Memphis, the Rockets bench showed up against Dallas (27 points), with Aaron Brooks (14 points) doing the most damage.
Brooks was supposed to be out up to three weeks with an ankle injury, and he returned in three days.
Stevie Franchise is supposed to be out three hours with a head cold and he's out three weeks.
Hey, you can't put tape on a cold.

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle is impressed with the Rockets' depth.
"They played a great game, and McGrady wasn't even on the floor 30 minutes," Carlisle said. "Their bench was, I think, plus 20 as a group, at least three or four of them were. That was probably the difference in the game. ... They've got three guys that are really difficult. You know, Yao and Artest both played huge games and McGrady really played well, but he didn't need to play his best game tonight to win. That tells you a little bit about how good they are right now."

Words to live by from Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, per pal David Barron, who spent time in Lubbock this week. (I'll leave you to your own interpretation, but you know I love Leach):
"I think that in the world of football, a lot of times there's a temptation to pick up rat droppings when elephant droppings are flying everywhere. So we try to focus on elephant droppings around here."

    Jokes of the Day
From David Letterman: "President Bush after the big game, he phoned the Phillies, you know to congratulate them, and luckily the Phillies have caller ID so that didn't go through."
From Jay Leno: "The economy is so bad, A-Rod is dating Madonna just to get the senior citizens discount."

I agree. Like I said before, Yao came back with a chip on his shoulder after China. He is on the Dark Side now. All bets are off.

I liked that he gave Howard a little shoulder after the hard foul just to let him know what he thought and just enough to make him know nothing's free.

I like Solomon's takes on the Rockets. I'm glad to see him give Yao well-deserved props.

I noticed Yao's body language was different last night. I also noticed Ron by his side a lot. It has to give Yao more confidence in himself and in the team when he has another star player who has his back no matter what. In previous years, the other star was too busy yucking it up and talking to opponents that played dirty or got rough with Yao. How many times did we see someone rough Yao up or try to play dirty only to see that guy and McGrady laughing it up at half court two minutes later. Ron doesn't do that.

Artest's loyalty to Yao on the court will be one of the most important things he brings to the team.

seriously... we need to send some one other than Artest out there to be the enforcer....

he is one of our big 3 and we cant have him... get any suspensions for comming to a players defense...

that is a job for one of our bench players... its very easy.... like in hockey... you mess with one of our best players... we mess with one of yours...

it is good to see Artest doing at the beggining of the season, luckily he will inspire everybody else on the team. And by the time teams like the jazz come and try to push, we will push harder.

Artest´s last night was an acceptable technical, he is showing his team how it has to be.

Yeah, I noticed that too....well it's been only two games, let's see if Yao and Ron's fellowship can last through the ups and downs of the season. But, for the record, Ron really changed my perception on what I used to think about him...in these 2 games he seems like the perfect team player for this squad...he commands respect, he hustles, he has heart, he hits shots when he has to, and he's got that killer instinct that you can't teach.

    **Gives Ron Artest his props**

Ron and Yao had many preseason games to gell together on the court. They proved it in the dallas game, those two carried the team. What I'm worried about is as Shane and Mcgrady get healthier, how will they incorporate into the system. There were times when all three Tmac, Yao and Artest were on the floor; tmac and artest kind of overlapped each other.

I'm not really worried about Battier, Shane is a team player, he doesn't have an ego, he wouldn't mind being the defensive ace for our second unit. Imagine that, SHANE BATTIER a top tier defensive talent.....playing for our 2ND UNIT...talk about DEPTH!

Tracy was a good leader, but it happened when he's in Orlando, and maybe first two years in rockets, as now, he could be a good leader, but his body just cant afford it. Injuries is rusting his body as well as his spirit.

As for Yao, i never think he's not a good leader, he's just didn't find the right time to. Jerome is right, just watch how he plays his role in Team China, you'll know how Yao could play in Rockets. Chines people take humility as a kind of repect to others, now Yao's gained enough repect from others, it's time for him to step up
