So, I've made some mentions (and a thread) on my knee being in not so good shape. It's been kind of "loose" feeling for the past 3 or so years, and lately (the past year or so) I've been able to click it in and out of place. Also, I've been having a very sharp, pinching pain once in a great while for the past couple of months.

Anyways, I'm stupid and I never went to the doctor, as the symptoms would come and go over time. Recently (for three weeks now) I've been playing some rec. softball at catcher. That hasn't been too well on my knee, but it hasn't really been that sore. So, to make a long story short (or shorter than it could be :p ), tonight, as I was laying around, I went to move my leg, and it felt really tight in that knee. Now, I can't bend the knee all the way. I can only bend it about half the normal range. (It's not really a matter of it being hurt, it's just a matter of it not bending) It also hurts when I try to move the knee laterally. I have a double header tomorrow, and I'm gonna be a trooper about it, because I love playing softball too much. If I get hurt, I get hurt. Come Monday, though, if I'm still having the problems, doctor's time it finally is for me.

I'm thinking it's a ligament that went bad, but I have no idea. I'd say either the PCL or ACL, but I'd guess PCL.

Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen to them? If so, what happened/how was it treated? Does anyone have a guess as to what it could be?

i'd definitely hope for the PCL, sounds a hell of a lot cooler than ACL.

not a doc but I have had 3 knee surgeries, 2 ACL reconstructions, and 1 microfracture procedure. the clicking is clearly torn cartilage and the looseness might be a torn ACL. you will just have to go to the doc so they can do an ACL test (very simple and quick and doesn't need an MRI) to see if it is still intact. then you will probably need an MRI to see where the cartilage is torn.

The only thing is, I remember no mechanism of injury, besides maybe weightlifting. My knee just randomly started hurting one football offseason. If it were something that significant, wouldn't I have known an exact cause?

If you're not insured, get a second job at Starbucks for some decent coverage.

Bills like that can bankrupt you....

I just assumed you did something significant when you mentioned you thought you injured a ligament. either way there is about a 99 percent chance you have torn cartilage. just google the symptoms for torn meniscus and I'm pretty sure you will find them consistent with what's wrong. its not hard to do tear the meniscus and it is relatively simple to fix assuming that's the only knee damage you have.

you need to go to the doc and get a mri.

That's actually what I thought it was before. I actually started a thread titled "Torn Meniscus?" Anyways, I think I will go to the doc for it finally....

Locking and clicking sounds like loose bodies (ie) cartilage -- which can easily cleaned up with arthroscopic surgery. At any rate head down to the Dr. and get it checked.

Honestly it doesn't sound like an ACL and definitely not a PCL.

A doctor can tell you in a matter of minutes if your ACL is torn.

In the meantime if you insist on continuing to play on your bad knee get a brace -- just in case it is an ACL/MCL. My buddy went 5+ years just wearing a brace with a complete tear of his ACL before he finally had the cash to get it repaired.

Btw - my cousin [15 years old] just had to have major microfracture surgery yesterday -- to say he's bummed out is the understatement of the year. :(

    Good Luck EWS

if you can only bend it half way and can't move it laterally, what are you trying to prove by playing catcher in a SOFTBALL game? check your ego and get that taken care of. it's SOFTBALL. no one's gonna remember Eddie for his toughness and grit b/c he played with a bummed knee.

"Go see a doctor... get rid of it."

Seriously, don't play softball on a bad knee. It's just softball. You do want to be able to walk, right?

I have a problem where it feels like something in my knee is catching and I cant extend it all the way. If I work with it I can get it to "release" and I have no pain and can take off runing if I had to. At first because of the location of the pain I thought it was my LCL, but now I think it has something to do with the IT Band(iliotibial band).

Kind of off subject but I'll ask anyway. If an ACL tear or injury is so bad, how was Boobie Miles able to play it off and actually go and play in a game? I mean he looked fine until he tried to cut back or was that whle scene added to the movie for dramatic purposes?

You might've injured it during a game and not noticed. I've gotten injured during Judo matches and not noticed until the next day that something was wrong because I've got so much adrenaline going and have a high pain threshold. I can sympathize with bad knees nursing a sprained one myself. I agree with the other posters here. Take it easy for awhile and heal. I'm someone who used to play injured all the time and its tough becuase not only are you hurting you can't perform at your best level. Sometimes you have to say that its not in my best interest or the teams best interest to play, see Jeff Bagwell.

If you are going to play by all means wear a brace . I wear neoprene knee sleeves all the time I work out whether my knees hurt or not. If your knee is that bad get one of the braces with metal or hard plastic supports that prevent lateral movement. I don't know though how well they will help you with being constantly in a crouch.

They effect different people different ways -- my buddy I mentioned a few posts up would snowboard without his brace sometimes [never wore it surfing] and it wasn't a huge problem.

Just think of all the folks back a hundred years plus ~ if they blew the ACL they had to live with it forever. Our bodies can adapt pretty well, but if you blow out more than just the ACL your in deep trouble without getting it repaired.

Okay, so I've slept most of the day away, and I think I'm actually getting a little more range of motion in my knee. I'll make it a game time decision tonight. If it hurts, then I won't go.

In the mean time, I called and I have a doctor's appointment on Monday at 9:45. I'm finally gonna get this thing checked out.

From what I understand, an ACL injury only hurts for a few minutes, IF it is a complete tears. Ironically, partial tears usually hurt worse, as they leave some nerve endings attached, and the nerve endings are what are sending the pain messages. If you completely tear an ACL, your brain can only recieve pain messages from the the actual ACL for a little while, and then the nerve endings go dead (except for the tissues around the ACL might still be sending pain). Because of this, a person is only usually completely immobilized with an ACL injury for a few minutes, then they will want to get back up and compete some more.

The ACL affects lateral knee stability, so as a coach or trainer or what have you, if you suspect someone has a tear, and they want to go back in, have them stand up and jog. They might be able to jog on the leg, as the ACL does not affect regular motion too totally much (besides keeping the tibia from shifting forward on the femur), but to truly test them, have them make a hard cut in the direction of the hurt knee. They will most likely fall flat on their face. Cruel, but it works.

Thanks for the descriptions. My mother had a knee injury once when I was little, I need to ask her what happened. I remember she had to have surgery and everything.

The other thing you do is to have them walk backwards. If they have an ACL tear they'll fall. The ACL helps keep the legs moving correctly and if it is torn, and you try to walk backwards, the bones don't move right and your stability will not hold.
