Anyone who says McGrady is selfinsh hasn't watched the same games I have this season.

His numbers would be a lot better if he hedn't been so UNselfish for the first 30 games or so of the season.

I can't believe I even watched that...basically, said that T-Mac has to get out of the first round to end his repuation of being a selfish player. And since he has Yao, there is no reason why he should not get ouf the 1st round. This is the only way he can prove that he make players around him better. Man, those guys are crazy.

This is perfect excuse for TMAC' hater. they always said TMAC has YAO but KOBE has nothing, ingoring ODOM is very talent player also, and KOBE doesnot help him at all.

But as the leader of ROX. I do think TMAC should help YAO

I never watched T-Mac play much in Orlando but I see alot of highlights of him jacking up many shots and ball hogging so I assumed he was a very selfish player. From watching pretty much every single Rockets game this season, he FAR from being selfish. If anything sometimes he is too unselfish. Those guys don't watch every game like we do so they don't know the things t-mac does. It's all good, let them hate, as we advance to the next round their eyes will open.

He did that because his teammates couldn't contribute. His teammates could not help at times. He had to take the shots.

He is definitely not selfish. He creates..he passes..always makes the pass first. There are plays for him where he shoots...and we have like sets involving him and Yao or somebody setting a pick. If he feels like he can make it, then he'll shoot it. He doesn't just jack up shots. He does it within the flow of the game. If Yao has good position, he'll pass. If he sees Wesley or Sura open for a shot..or cutting to the basket..or Weatherspoon or Padgett..he'll pass it to him.
He averages like 5 or 6 assists per game..and he passes more than the stats show.......I don't really know how they came up with the assumption that he's selfish. Really stupid.
Tmac is a great passer and is unselfish. I hope in the playoffs though..everyone will get involved..but Yao and Tmac take over and dominate.
BTW I don't think Lebron is selfish. Isn'te verybody selfish? Kobe is selfish..but he's not that selfish..but he's more selfish than Tmac! Kobe's out of the playoffs so whatever.

Yeah, T-Mac is really selfish. That's why for the first 4-5 minutes of every game, most of the shots are taken by Yao, Spoon, and Wesley. Bring back Steve!!! ;)

You guys are being a bit deliberately blind.

The player who leads the league in scoring usually does a little stat padding - even if it's only like Robinson's 70 on the last day. McGrady was very guilty of it in Orlando. He's not one of those guys who can't play well with others, but he has a tendency to keep it for himself a little more than he should.

Even this year, he takes a lot of off-balance, bad shots with plenty of time on the shot clock. Sure, he makes them sometimes - but the odds aren't as good as if he shared the ball. If he wants to take a bad shot, he can have one at the end of the shot clock. There is no reason for McGrady to ever to take some of the shots he does, unless it's a time-dependent scenario.

So, yeah, McGrady's selfish. But he's damned elite as well. And Bryant is more selfish.

The question was loaded to begin with, with clear implication that "yes, T-Mac is selfish". Even Mike Wilbon objected to the term "selfish" being used in the question (the actual question was "Do you think you have to go beyond the 1st round of the playoffs to shed your selfish reputation?" ), pointing out that "I think Tony submitted that Q calling you selfish", because Korenheiser is a T-Mac hater. Wilbon said that he thinks the Rockets are a good team, but since he picked Dallas to be the "dark horse" of the playoffs, he doesn't expect the Rockets to beat the Mavs (basically he means that while he likes the Rocks, he just thinks that they are unlucky to face-off with his "dark horse" pick in the playoffs, so it is a matchup issue, not that the Rocks are a bad team or anything like that).

The biggest problem I have with the question, however, is the whole "logic" behind the argument (which isn't much of a logic really)...

Basically, what the F*k does advancing in the playoffs have ANYTHING whatsoever to do with selfishness?!! Is Kobe any less "selfish" for having success in the playoffs? Is Iverson any less "selfish" for getting to the finals? Haven't there been plenty of "selfish" champions?

As I said, it is a loaded question (meant to be rhetorical really), AND the logic behind the argument just doesn't hold up.

Playoffs are ALL about matchups. I have NO DOUBT whatsoever that the Rockets are a top 4 team in the West, but they are unlucky enough to match up with (IMHO) a superior team in the Mavs, I think the Rockets would beat ANY teams in the West besides the Spurs and the Mavs.

Don't go to BSPN for analysis. It's nothing but ignorant comments and lax research. Put the show on mute and just watch the highlights on the show and you'll find yourself less irritated by them.

Dude, you are a patented McGrady hater it ain't even funny:rolleyes:

The BEST players take more shots, they are PAYED more to do so, they are DEPENDED ON to take those shots and get the averages they get. Should McGrady "defer" to a player who is lesser than him when he can take the shot instead? Don't guys like Padgett, MJ, and Wesley making a living based on the open shots he helps them get with his passes?

It is beyond me as to how you call McGrady selfish. Does a selfish player defer to a 3rd year center for an entire month because he wanted to show him respect and consideration? Does a selfish player make passes to his teammates at crunch times to show them that he trusts them to win games? How many shots have MJ, Padgett, Wesley, and Barry taken at the end of games off McGrady passes (when he could have elevated and taken them himself, and no one would blame him for doing so).

Averaging 26ppg this season tells you that McGrady is anything BUT selfish. His scoring is a lot better than the numbers he is putting up now, and whenever he is asked about if he likes not having to constantly score and defer to other capable players, he happily replies that he loves the fact that those days are behind him.

A selfish player would want to be ALL alone to absorb the spotlight by himself, and would insist on running off anyone who takes away from his glory (see Kobe).

Garnett isn't selfish, and McGrady isn't selfish. AI isn't selfish either, he wants to win, but he just hasn't been ever given the chance to play with another top-notch star in the league (Webber is hubbled as is, so that doesn't count for now, may be next season).

Is Lebron selfish for trying to do "too much" in the past few weeks to put his team on his back and try to win? That is called a sense of responsibility, that is called leadership, that is called heart and determination. That is not selfishness.

The funny thing is, stars can't win either way: they get blamed for taking "too many shots" and not defering "enough" (which is a subjective term that is rarely used objectively), OR they are blamed for not taking the "big shots" when needed to (I remember people on this BBS blaming McGrady for not taking the shot to win the game when instead he passed to a wide-open Jon Barry who ended up missing the shot, which proves my point that people want to have it both ways).

But it is OK, some people like yourself think McGrady shoots too much, and apparently would like for him to turn into a Jason Kidd and play point, and not the scorer he is paid to be (except he not only scores, he is a rebounder, excellent defender, and superb ball-handler/passer).

But anyways, that was really not the point of the post (despite my long reply). The point is that Korenheiser has gone out of his way to ask the question in a manner that clearly is suggestive in nature (a rhetorical question really), and even his sidekick Wilbon called him on it.

Anyways, this is just how I see things, we clearly disagree on this.

Since T-mac is a jumpshooter, it is very easy to call him "selfish" just by watching a few games. I see people brining up the occasions where t-mac shoots early in the shot clock.. He probably hit 2 shots in a row before that and is feeling hot, so he wants to keep the rhythm up and catch his defender off-gaurd. That strategy can be seen as "selfish" since he does not try to get anyone else involved, but that is not the case. A selfish player would brick 4 jack-ups in a row and still keep jacking up shots knowing he is not having a good shooting night. (I don't mean at the end of games; ie putting his will on the game). How many players have the ability to score 62 pts on mostly jumpshots? T-mac has the gifted ability to rise up and shoot over anyone and once he has rhythm combined with drive he is unstoppable. That is his game. A selfish player reaches out of his "game" to get "his".

    T-mac 12-28 FG = Understandable.
Ryan Bowen 10-25 FG = WTF?
Yao 13-26 = Many mouths drooling on CF.net

Would you call Yao selfish if those 26 shots were mostly jumpshots from 18ft early in the clock with no defensive reaction (an open look)? I think many many people would love to see yao even attempt 26 shots, because we know good things will happen. There has been a handful of games where Tmac had a horrible shooting night.. but a handfull is very small during a 82 game season. Unless we are talking about Octopi.. which we aren't. But anyway.. my case in point, T-mac is as selfish as you want your best player to be, whereas "selfish" is defined as "using your best abilities to your advantage". T-mac does this, Yao still needs work on this but it will come.

I'm dealing with mild food poisoning so hopefully this is understandable.

If someone takes up all the shots and makes most of them, he's being agressive. If someone takes up all the shots and misses most of them, he's being selfish.

Oh, also, if someone has no baggage and makes all the cool commercials in the world and is a media darling, he's being aggressive leader (if his team can't win, he needs help). If someone askedForATrade/smokedPot/shootHisGF in the past and looks ugly as hell and curses at the media, he's beining selfish (if his team can't win, it's all his fault).
